Seriously dude. Go with initiative. Do what you think you should do and just don't include the lame lines/try too hard. If they put you down just think that it's their loss. It generally is. Act friendly, tease a bit. Get her comfortable. Being the 'bad guy' can just be shown by not using so much light hearted humor/ taking the piss a bit. There is loads of stuff on the net on this I'm sure.
askmen probably has stuff on your questions. Although having given some of their stuff a once over I'd say it's not all that accurate. It's all in the confidence.
And once you get a certain standard, just keep it. As soon as you feel as if you can pull the hotter/cooler girls that's what you stick too. That way you don't end up getting in a relationship with a girl who thinks she's better than you. Not what you want even if the bedroom time is great.
As for swimmer girl. Honestly man. Just keep it light hearted. Joke about. She may be a stunner but after all her swimming time, her social skills/confidence in that area is probably in the pooper. Wake her up to reality by just being cool to her. Don't be overly nice. Don't follow her around. But make a bit of an effort without seeming OTT/Gay. And whatever you do, don't let her take you shopping unless you're dating. EVER.
What may help you is getting a group of lads together. Drinking a bit in a club and going around having 30 second conversations with girls and asking for their numbers. Make it seems really casual/routine. And keep them at ease. Joke around and keep their attention on you after you've gone off again. Remember - humor/confidence/treat your time as money.
