Atkins

I think my bias is due to me seeing so many people do Atkins horribly incorrectly. I've seen so many people group absolutely anything and everything under the banner of "Atkins". I don't know if there are dozens of different low carb diets and now people are confused, or what, but I've literally witnessed several people do things like eat ALOT at the KFC buffet, a chinese buffet, or a pizza buffet... every day... and they believed they were eating as healthily as they possibly could since they didn't eat the mashed potatoes at KFC, the noodles at the Chinese place, or the crust at the pizza buffet. This isn't just one or two people I've watched do this either. So basically, every single time the word "Atkins" or "low carb" pops up, I hear/see people say things that makes it sound like they're doing this same type of thing. The term "Atkins" often comes up as an excuse, rather than a remedy.

If you're not one of these people, and you do it right, and you know for a fact that you're not hurting yourself, and it's working... then good for you. I simply fear for the uneducated folks who fall into the category above. Trust me... there's ALOT of them.

I don't choose it for myself due to athletic performance reasons, but as it was previously mentioned, that's no reason to preach against low-carb... unless you also have similar concerns, which I doubt you do.

How do you know these people do you go up and say exuse me are you
on the adkins diet or are they friends of yours cuz you say several like you
can tell they are on a adkins diet?
Any dieters I don't care what your on shouldn't go to any type of buffets
and I do know any1 with 1/2 a brain that is on a low carb diet would have
common since not to eat at a buffett where you don't have a clue what seasonings they use too many carbs at the bar in my opinion and its only an opinion!
I am thinking about trying adkins but following it to a "T" and for me I am going to do lowcarb but even a more healthier way such a 2%cheeses leaner meats NO BACON(don't care for it) but if I feel hungry it's good to know I can chow on some healthy baked chicken breast or maybe some eggs or 2%cheese ! Tammy:)

How do you know these people

Family, friends, co-workers, church members, cell mates...

oh ok........lol cellmates I see why they would hit the buffett
bars, all that yucky jail food who can blame them.

The old thought on Atkins was you had to do it for life, but many people are able to tranisiton to a south beach type carb slowly and not put on the weight.

I am 34 years old and have struggled with my weight all my life and the ONLY thing that has EVER worked for me is a low carb lifestyle.

I started doing my 'version' of Atkins (I cut sugar and caffeine out of my diet and kept to low carbs) and it's pretty darn easy for me to lose weight now.

I've been 'testing' my diet for awhile now and have discovered that as long as I have a ratio of 5 'low carb' days to 2 'whatever I want to eat as far as carbs go but still no sugar' days I can still lose an average of 2 pounds per week. This means if I buckle down Mon-Fri I can then enjoy the weekend however I see fit and this is definitely a lifestyle I can live with --

And that is the key. No diet works, lifestyle changes do.

And as far as people saying 'this or that is unhealthy', there are negatives and positives with EVERYTHING and you just can't know sometimes. One day there's a study that says caffeine is bad for you, the next day it's good for you, one day chocolate is bad for you, the next day it's good -- there are many examples a little research could bring you.

I say if you find something that works for you and makes you feel good, then congratulations, you have succeeded.

Good luck to everyone! :)

This week was the first official jump onto the weight loss train. I decided to do it by way of calorie counting. Why? Because I could get a mix of all sorts of food, and still make it for a day.I thought it encouraged self control, portion control, and learning about how many calories I should have in a day, etc.

However, my mom,and my grandmother both believe I should have done Atkins, cutting the carbs, and gradually introducing them back into my system. (atleast to get started)
My Doctor also reccomended for me to cut the carbs (because the weight is mostly on my stomach)

I, however, do not have any knowledge of the Atkins diet, and didn't believe in replacing my carbs with other foods, because the fact is, Its not something I can do for the rest of my life. My banana had carbs, my bread has carbs. I figured it would be healthier to do the calorie counting, which was much easier for me to understand, and get that right, then try a diet, that neither me, or really my mom knew much about...and so far, I seem to be doing okay.

My question is:

Is it possible that replacing carbs with protein is better for you then trying to find a natural balance between everything?

Do you think I should try Atkins if I seem to be having progress with calorie counting based on what my mom, grandma, and doctor think?

The trick is in eating the right carbs and not completely elminating carbs.
I am a firm believer of the high protien balanced carb diet because I have seen amazing results. The theory behind this is that when you eliminate sugar, white flour and other Funky Foods, you force your body to burn off your fat reserves and use them as an energy source.

The elimination of sugar and foods high in starch, like potatoes and white rice, is the essential reason we lose weight on a high protien low carb diet. Carbohydrates are one of the body's main sources of energy. Carbos are the fuel that keeps us going. It is important to be eating the right kinds of carbohydrates that give us energy and provide necessary fiber for proper elimination such as veggies, yams. But some carbohydrates, like sugar and foods very high in starch, are loaded with more energy than our bodies can use at a given time. This excess energy that isn't burned off will be stored as fat for later use. (Of course, your activity level determines that quotient.)

re:

Honestly, the main thing about the low carb lifestyle that makes it a winner for me is the obscene amount of food I can actually eat and STILL lose weight. Yes, the weight loss is minimal; without exercising we're talking 1/2 --1 pound a week but slow and steady wins the race and I know I will be able to stick to this kind of lifestyle because it doesn't feel like I'm depriving myself. :)

Glad to hear you have found something for YOU.
It is absolutely crucial that you do what you think will work for YOU, not what anyone else thinks. YOU and only you know YOU.... lol.... And if you feel that you don't, well you will when you try to lose weight... you really get to know yourself, especially if you are not affraid too.

And only you can assemble the tools that work for you. So if it's calorie counting, go for it! The thing about Atkins is that you will be more constrictive with your food than with calorie counting because Atkins (i.e. low carb) is all about eating only this, not that, ....and then when you are reintroducing carbs you can only have a little of this today, and none of that.... You get the idea. At least calorie counting can be for life, and you can still have your banana.

Some tools in my toolbox that you may find helpful:
chapter 7; weight watchers; mp3 player; my own workout room

Hope this is helpful.

You should look into the South Beach Diet. Rather than worrying about staying away from carbs, you learn which ones are good for you and go from there. Good luck to you!

I think if you're having success with calorie counting then by all means stick with it... but if you find that you aren't having the kind of success you are looking for then I would seriously suggest cutting down on your carbs (as you have stated even your doctor has suggested).

People seem to have this misguided view on carb counting, you don't eliminate them, you just cut down on them the same as you do your fat and calories.

Try this: why don't you calculate how many carbs per day you are consuming and take a small percentage off of that -- example, say you've been consuming roughly 150 carbs per day, then cut down to 100 and see what that does for you. 100 carbs per day is still a lot, you could still have your bread and your banana, etc.

Unfortunately some people (like me) simply cannot lose weight (or not gain weight) unless they really restrict their carbs, hopefully this won't be you but it's a reality that you may have to face, unless you just say the heck with it and be happy the way you are.

Good luck no matter what you do!

I was calorie counting and even lost 60 lbs but I had a hunger
issue and thats why I am trying the lowcarb way for 14 days
and see how I do and how I feel and of course how much weight I lose!
Goodluck on whatever you choose ,Tammy:)

Atkins Diet

Obesity is the main reason for many diseases like cardiovascular problems, diabetes, depression, and sleep apnea. The only way out of this problem is to follow a strict and healthy diet. But that doesn’t mean avoiding food altogether for that it is not at all a good option since it would deprive our body of essential nutrients. Hence a controlled carbohydrate diet is advised for carbohydrate is mostly responsible for increasing one’s body weight.

The low carbohydrate Atkins Diet was first introduced in 1970’s by Dr. Robert Atkins. But it became popular almost 10 years later after the release of his book - ‘Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution’ which went one to become one of the bestsellers of that decade. In no time, millions of people in the United States and abroad began to follow Atkins diet specifications as their first diet choice.

What is ?
Atkins Diet is a high protein, low carbohydrate diet. It promotes using meat, eggs, and cheese while discouraging high carbohydrate-content foods such as bread and rice. If excess carbohydrates are taken in, excess enzymes should be generated to digest it. This may lead to disintegration of pancreatic cells in a long run, which may further lead to diabetes. According to Robert Atkins, on having a low carbohydrate diet, our body will enter into a state of ketosis, in which, instead of carbohydrates, fat is digested to release energy. This reduces the need for more insulin produced by the pancreatic cells and the fat deposits are subsided. Thus, the body weight is reduced to a considerable amount.

Advantages of Atkins Diet:
1. Considerable amount of body weight is reduced by the burning of fats which is the secondary source of energy.

2. Inter-meal diets could be avoided since you won’t be hungry between meals.

3. Could maintain constant blood sugar level.

4. Since most of the toxins contained in our body are removed along with the burning of fats, overall heath is improved.

Things to Note:

1. It is recommended to consult a doctor or physician before trying out Atkins diet meal plans.

2. Daily exercise is highly recommended along with Atkins diet foods.

3. People with kidney disorders, pregnancy, and diabetes are advised not to follow Atkins diet meal plans.

Phases of Atkins Diet:
1. Induction - In this phase, which includes first 14 days of the diet, it is said that you will lose up to 15 pounds of your body weight. During this time, the amount of carbohydrates consumed per day will be less than 20 grams. The only carbohydrates included in your Atkins diet recipes will be low carbohydrate-content vegetables like tomato.

2. Ongoing Weight Loss – During this second stage, the consumption of carbohydrates is raised up to 5 grams per day.

3. Pre-maintenance – During this stage of Atkins diet meal plans, the rate of fall of body weight will be slower. Also, you can experiment various other foods to see whether they add your body weight or not. If found safe, you could add it to your Atkins diet food products.

4. Maintenance – You enter this phase when you find that you have reduced the body weight to the desired level. Also you could add some more carbohydrates to your diet which do not raise your body weight, like full wheat bread.

Tail Piece: The ultimate result of Atkins diet program (other diet programs as well) depends solely on how well the person follows the recommendations. Hence make sure that you follow it religiously.
