How much water is too much?

Is it possible to drink too much water? I'm working on what I will say is my last glass of water at work today, so my total for today (at work alone) is 160oz. That's a gallon of water!

Can too much water be bad for you?

I found my answer

Yes, you can drink too much water - it's call water intoxication. Here is what I pulled off of one website. I guess I will cut back on my intake from now on. As long as I get my minimum 64oz, I'll be happy. If I get 96oz - good, but that's as far as I'll go!

Yes, and there is even a technical term for it: water intoxication!

In healthy people, the amount of water we drink is controlled by our thirst mechanism, located in the brain. We consume water in the form of liquids (juice, milk, soda) and also in foods (primarily fruits and vegetables). The only foods that DON'T contain water are commercially dehydrated foods.

Healthy adults require approximately three quarts of fluid each day. About half of this comes from food, with the remainder from beverages, hence the advice to drink eight cups of liquid each day. If you exercise, are breastfeeding, are ill, or live in a hot climate, your fluid needs are higher than the three quarts each day.

However, it is possible to drink too much water if you put your mind to it. We're talking A LOT OF WATER, more than is possible under normal circumstances. Often associated with other obsessive-compulsive behaviors, drinking large amounts of water can be hazardous. Too much water in our system causes the dilution of essential electrolytes in our blood stream, which has implications for control of heart beat. My recommendation is 8-12 cups of fluid, combined with additional fluid to support exercise or hot conditions. If you're drinking more than this, consult your physician.

64oz so far today...it's slowly getting easier to reach my 64oz goal each day. i still don't like water, but i know it's better for me than coffee! i bought a really cute water bottle, too, and i feel a little guilty if i don't actually use it, so that's a good motivator as well.
good night!

Well I'm sorry, but I just found the information about water intoxication and hyponatremia extremely important. If you search the web with "drinking too much water", tons of articles come up about the negative effects of drinking too much water. Drinking too much water can flush salt and essential electrolytes from your body.

Yesterday, I drank 160 oz of water, that equals 1 gallon. I was drinking all the time. If you can manage to drink 1 to 2 gallons a day, you must be drinking continously.

I apologize if I have upset anybody. But it is probably a good idea if there are people trying to step up their water intake, not to over indulge without looking into it further. The best thing for each individual to do is probably to ask their doctor, to see what it right for them.

To all of you who feel like they are doing something wrong, or not keeping up with others, by only getting the recommended 64oz a day. Don't worry about it. Don't push yourself.

Morning,

Isn't 128 ounces a gallon? I figure I drink between one and two gallons a day...closer to one, mind you.
