Just wanted to say WOW! GREAT job on improving your meals to well balanced dishes just from last week! 1600 is a more sustainable way of losing fat (any less may be muscle you're losing). I know when I balance my carbs/proteins/fats at every meal, I feel more sustained. Keep it up! Cheers to progress!

I know whiskey does no one any good, but I do like it, and it has few calories per ounce of actual alcohol than most drinks

Alcohol has been my weakness for quite some time! I look forward to a glass of wine here or there which is worse than whiskey too lol. You seem to be doing great with portioning it out which is very important. Just keep in mind when you consume alcohol, the organs in your body stop metabolizing everything else until it processes all the alcohol since it sees it as a toxin ie slowing down fat loss. I'm sure the small amount your consuming won't be a huge different but I just wanted to share the interesting info :)

Yesterday was a good day, wife went shopping and got stocked up on lots of fruits and veggies. My stepson brought over this awful been, Miller Lite with Strawberry Lemonade, I had to try one, or part of one anyway. I had no idea they made stuff like that, and now don't know why.

Put a pork roast on the slow bbq last night for Father's day today, need to go out and see how it did.

My dog binged but good yesterday. Sister is our older dog, a 9 or 10 year old beagle mix. She has always been very aggressive about food, and gained lots of weight. We have been trying to control her eating and she had lost some weight. Yesterday we bought a 50 lb bag of dog food and put it on a shelf about 5 ft off the ground to keep her away. Well somehow she figured a way and was able to chew a hole in the corner of the bag and get into it. She is not a big or tall dog, this was more than 1 ft higher than her higher reach so must have involved some jumping (never seen her jump) or some pretty creative climbing. Anyway once she got into it she ate a whole lot, we found her sick, throwing up, and with a distended belly. She was sick all night, seems somewhat better now. The sad thing is I know she'd do it again today if she could.

I can relate to Sister, while I have never gotten that sick from overeating I certainly have binged to my detriment and gone to great lengths to find food. I think its just instinctive, for both of us, however for her she has us to control (or try to control) her food supply. I have to rely on myself for that......

I guess we need a 6 ft shelf! No, I think we will have to find some kind of heavy locking trunk for the food. She has chewed through regular plastic bins.

Sounds like a metal trunk is required. Our younger son's dog is similar. He's a hound & is devious with food. I hope Sister does feel better today. Poor thing!

Today was a bit of a challenge, had a couple of really good home cooked meals and lots of folks over. In the end I don't think I did too bad, late breakfast and early dinner, but no lunch. I ate a bunch of raw veggies just before dinner so I would be less hungry.

...Just keep in mind when you consume alcohol, the organs in your body stop metabolizing everything else until it processes all the alcohol since it sees it as a toxin ...
whenever reading about the toxic effects of alcohol, nearly every reference i've come across points at "chronic alcohol consumption"

So sorry to hear about your dog’s incident!! I can’t believe she figured out how to get up that high!

I will also say that alcohol is the vice im not willing to give up entirely. Before I began to track my calories and calorie deficit, I was drinking craft beers (high cal), wine, champagne, or anything else basically whenever I felt like it, however much I felt like having, but now I budget a shot or two with zero cal flavored seltzer into my calorie count on the days I want to have a drink. I know it does me no good either way, but this way I’m acknowledging it and accounting for it. Anyway, just saying I empathize with you, and making better choices with limiting alcohol is certainly better than nothing—nobody is perfect!

Thanks to all the concern over Sister, she is fine, though her belly is still a bit swollen. Yesterday she felt well enough to get into a fight with Taki, the much younger, larger, and more energetic dog, over the place where Sister had gotten into the dog food. First time she's done that. I guess Sister was protecting the site of the kill, in hopes another bag of dog food comes along.

I hope chronic includes over indulgent. You could call my alcohol use chronic, probably 5 days a week, but only a few drinks in the evening. Never thought of myself as a chronic alcohol user.

I have on occasion had too much to drink, but not too often, and when I do I suffer the next day and am not tempted to drink for a while.

I am not an alcoholic, I don't think I am anyway. I can give up drinking for days to weeks when I am traveling or something where its not easily available without thinking much about it. Its not like food, I like alcohol, but don't crave it. For example I don't drink when the grandkids are here and I might be called on to drive them home or take them somewhere, it doesn't seem to be a big deal. I can take or leave a drink, but it takes will power for me not to overeat.

to be fair, in the case of alcohol consumption, chronic seems to be a term reserved for a long term pattern of abuse rather than merely long term use or occasional overindulgence.

I'm similar to you with alcohol, Rob. I do enjoy having a glass or 2 of wine at the end of the day, most days, but I know to lose weight I will just have to cut it right down. I think I am going to allow myself one or 2 glasses twice a week max until I get right down again. You are doing really well making positive changes. Do what suits you best.

Today was a good day, for a Monday anyway. I am still working on retiring, let one of my biggest clients know and that I wanted off his biggest project. This is hard, I am a consulting engineer, and independent one. I spent a whole career doing everything I could to get and keep work, this seems to go against my base instinct. But I've decided I don't need to keep working, and I don't want to work the rest of my life, so its the right thing, it just feels funny.

I did notice that yesterday I left a 105 calorie banana snack off of my food list, that puts me up to 1,661 calories yesterday, still well within my 1,600 to 1,800 target. Did fine today also, though I did have 2 glasses of wine. I guess if my weight loss stalls at some point I may try giving up the alcohol, it probably averages 150 to 200 calories a day.

Was it good? Did it fit your calories? Then I wasn´t a bad idea :) My dad is working toward retirement (from his farm) as well and what you describe sounds very familiar. Doing it slowly over time means you have time to adapt and find new, exciting things to do with your time.

Honestly hats off to you for keeping track of everything. When I started I was soo lazy but I realized the importance of it specially with low cal diets. What worked for me was basically distracting myself every time I even started thinking about food I found myself crying most of the time. i still hace a long way to go and I read this little article and was considering giving it a try because I related to it so much but im hesistant with things like this let me know what you think of it

Hey Janae, thanks for your post. They removed your link as an anti-spam measure, why don't you start your own diary where you can tell your story yourself.
