Sparrows Experiment

Sparrow, I know exactly where you're coming from. I totally "get it". Because that is how I would do it. And if I crashed and burned, I'd learn something for the next race.

I believe men's body deal with stress differently than female bodies do. Most women are much better at coping with the physical stress of endurance sports and we have that extra boost of energy at the end that men often don't have.

However, if I had to run more than 800m in 97 degree heat, my body would certainly be complaining to me. You went a lot further than that ... and you swam and biked, too.

I'm not an endurance athlete by any stretch of the imagination. I'm built for speed and short distances.

But you have to know that when I read your posts, what you can do with your body literally blows me away. I have so much respect for what you can do and I'm in awe with how hard you train and disciplined an athlete you are.

And you do all that while juggling a family. Absolutely amazing.

You are my inspiration - period

I know nothing about triathlons or long distance running, but if Sparrow here isn't 100% the rest of us can all pack it in and have a beer... (mmm beer - what was I saying?) That said, even kindred spirits can have some things to work out between them. Here's to hoping you can appreciate what you've already accomplished (separately and together) even as you continue striving for progress.

your reaction to my post does not make my post what you say it is.

I was giving some athlete to athlete encouragement and last minute thoughts for you as you run your race.

I could care less about some marathon, or some finish time, people ACTUALLY matter to me alot. Understanding you is why I say what I say.

you have made me into a villan.....

I hope you trip :p

Love you Sparrow! Nice, long run. Keep up the good work. I expect you could do a marathon in your sleep! Don't get upset about FF, he just gets a little excited sometimes. I honestly see his intentions as good! You know he loves you, respects your abilities and is honestly trying to help!

FF, love you to brother. I think your total enthusiasm for fitness leads you to be misunderstood sometimes. I think the "you've never listened to me" comment was a little over the top but all else seemed "helpful".

You two, make up and quit fighting!:valintines:

Yesterday 3000 yd swim

Today 60 min bike ride (20 mi)
30 min jog (3.5 miles)
30 min weights

Get better!!! I'm sure you'll be going stir crazy in a day or two so you really don't have a choice now do you?:cheeky:

I've got a running question real quick: What does it mean to sink into your hips? I'm trying to picture but just can't. Please explain!

I do feel better. Its toying with me though. I've felt generally crummy since Monday but I can tell the airborne and good diet has helped keep it from turning into what everyone else is getting. At least I can function for the most part. I just tire easily and I've been taking monster naps and sleeps at night.

I went to the gym today and felt stronger than the past few days so thats great. I also started supping with magnesium again. For whatever reason that has always helped me when I start doing longer endurance training.

1 hour spin class
45 min run
core work

I especially felt great running and core felt very strong today. It makes such a difference in my running when I get tired.

GT-sinking into hips is using more of your glute muscles to power your momentum. Arching your back slightly, sticking out your butt and using those (in ladies) saddle bag area muscles. Its imagining the power originating there as opposed to your legs. Your legs just sort of go along for the ride so they don't tire as easily and you become smoother and less likely to "bob" up and down. Your core is also fully engaged but still and stable. Its the best way to conserve energy in a run, at least for me its working that way

Thanks Sparrow! Another 5k down tonight but I wasn't totally satisfied. I failed on the nutrition end and suffered for it. Not a big deal but it pis sed me off. I made it through and don't plan on making that mistake again. A mid afternoon snack is such a small deal but I overlooked it and it cost me. Thanks for the explanation of sinking into your hips. Maybe some day I'll run a long enough distance for it to make a difference, lol. Seriously though, I really do appreciate the explanation. Take care, Greg

Sometimes its an oversight of hydration so stay well-stocked in that way also.

Ah the hip thing can help you NOW so try it! Just slow up and experiment with different ways of running while you're out there. You may find something good!

swim:
300 warm up
8x50 decending speed 1-4 @ :55
12x100 IM rotation set @ 1:40
200 back kick
8x25 sprint :35
cool down

Swimming is lacking lately but its not a worry. I can tell where my weights have been failing me when I'm in the pool.

I have butterflies already for tomorrow's 20 miler. The magnesium is the magic bullet, I'm feeling so much better.

I'm spending my saturday sleeping in. ;)

Me too! All that running stuff is just stupid. :)
