G8r80's training / dieting / cycling / log

Walked 2 miles each way to my work site. Rode 26 miles in 1:30 along the Coastal Trail. I saw two adult bull moose on the trail. Each was about 20 feet away and was grazing obliviously.

Sparrow,

I'm in Anchorage, AK, this week - it's 10:45pm and bright outside! I travel each year to as many as 6 time zones and fortunately I adapt very quickly to the local time.

Bent over rows: 155 x 7 x 3
Deadlift: 225 x 7, 5, 5
Squat: 127 x 7, 5, 5
Bench: 127 x 4, 147 x 6 x 3
Barbell curl: 45 x 10, 55 x 10 x 3

Swim: 400 yards

Before my surgery, I thought I could average close to 20 mph on the bike and run low 9-minute miles and 1 sec / yard on the swim. Now I realize that is unrealistic. My surgery has sucked more strength, speed and endurance out of me than I initially realized and it is not gonna come back in time for my June 29 tri in Minnesota. That tri showing might get downright ugly.

I have been told by other open-heart surgery veterans that my strength, speed and endurance will be off and slowly return incrementally, beginning at the 6-month post-surgery mark (October, when I will do my Olympic length tri in Nevada) and not continuing up to 1 year.

wow man, you are hitting hit hard! Good for you! nice to see that your body can handle your HEART! you have Heart! it is only exceeded by your baqckbone!

FF

Has the surgery affected your cardiac output at all, and what about medications are you on blood thinners? What about absolute V02 have they said anything about that?

Just interested because my uncle has recently had similar surgery to you.

Sorry to hear your uncle had this surgery, but the prognosis for a complete recovery is very good for most.

My problem was a dilatated ascending aorta that caused my aortic valve to regurgitate which meant that as my heart pumped oxygenated blood to the body, about 1/2 of the blood would flow back into the left ventricle of the heart which meant that my body wasn't getting as much oxygenated blood as it needed. So, with my new ascending aorta and aortic valve which stopped the regurgitation, I should be getting more blood to my body. I thought I would be stronger than I am right now, post-surgery, than I was pre-surgery.

I had to slow down for 6 weeks before the surgery and 6 weeks after the surgery, but I feel I am weaker than I would have been with a normal 12-week layoff.

I have taken Plavix since November '06 but that never affected me. I did not change any of my meds after surgery.

I have not had my VO2 checked before or after so I don't know if that has changed.

Thanks, my uncles was a faulty aortic valve as well he has had it replaced. Its good to see that people recover from it well, cheers

That stupid bench/dead/row/squat contest gave me some serious DOMS in my quads, lower back, @ss, and especially hamstrings. I could barely get out of bed the last two days and had to put in long lecture days. Not to mention, this is my fourth city, Seattle, I've been to in the last four weeks.

Enough whining!

Today, I did a sprint triathlon at the hotel: 440 yards in pool, 28 min. run (probably just under 3 miles), and 35 minutes on the stationary bike.

The swim and run surprised me that I did not get winded. In fact, the swim especially felt as good or better than I did pre-surgery! I arranged for a couple of lessons with the swim coach next week before my sprint tri a week from Sunday.

Would you like some cheese with that whine old man? LOL

Keep it up! You should be feeling 21 again with these workouts.:beerchug:

And this is how long after having your chest cracked, rearranged, put back together etc? You are simply the picture of dedication and commitment. Keep up the good work.

Bench: 127x10, 178x1, 127x10, 127x10, 127x8 (to failure)
Assisted pullups: 10x3
Lat pull downs: 10x2 supine, 10x2 pronate
Assisted dips: 6. My sternum pops when I do these, so I'll have to discontinue these for a while.
Rode the stationary bike for 31 minutes. Broke my previous best time on a program by 2 minutes.
Pool at YMCA was closed because of lightning concerns so I went home.

Still have doms all throughout my pecs and traps. My hamstring doms has finally ended after 8 days.

Thanks Greg! 2 1/2 months since my surgery.

Now, go kick that teenybooper Aim's butt!:D

Had a lesson with swim coach today to evaluate my stroke. I swam with a 2mil wetsuit which is thinner than the 5mil I will wear on Sunday. Even with the 2 mil, he said my legs were hanging too far down. When I lowered my face to lift my legs and hips, water goes in my nose which is very annoying. A remedy that I hadn't thought of was just blow out my nose! Duh! (I sometimes wonder why two universities awarded me degrees..).

He said my stroke was decent and 25 strokes / 25 yards was not bad at this juncture. He wants me to practice my kick until our last session on Thursday.

So, I did 300 yards with the kickboard, 100 yards kicking on my back, and 400 yards freestyle. I blew out of my nose the whole time and kept my mouth shut and was able to keep my legs.

Upright rows: 10x3

Tonight I ran (2) 1.5 mile laps in 13:39 and 13:45. This comes out to 9:10 minute miles which is within :15 seconds of my recent PB. And it was really hot, even at night. When I run again Wednesday night, my last run before my triathlon, I am gonna go for a recent PB.

I think I am peaking in time for Sunday's triathlon and, on second thought, I think I will have fully recovered before 6 months.

I do my first triathlon, a sprint (440 yd swim, 10 mile bike, and 5k run) on Sunday, June 29 in Rochester, MN. My wife told me today that she and my daughter and older son had tried to plan to attend without my knowing but needed my help to arrange their flights. Bless their hearts :newangel:

So, they will be flying up with me and attending. Should be interesting...

Thanks for the offer Drex. If you're available, let's ride one evening after 6:00pm when my class gets out, assuming your quads are up to it, and work out one evening. I fly out on Thursday evening.

Are you still gonna be able to make it to the Rochester triathlon? That'd be cool if you did. I had told my wife about you and she wants to meet you. Here is the info:
