Traditionally I do the worst with this kind of puzzle... I got 4 letters in the wrong place in word 1 and started guessing... The problem is that there are millions of options that work for the missing letter...

A lot of them are hardly used or group together...
eg - next to no consonants may indicate a need for GH, lack of vowels may indicate a Y
