Why get tattooed?

I've decided to get another tattoo and its been 15 years since I was last under the needle. My existing ink is there purely on account of a misguided youth with no particular story behind it and it doesn't signify anything about me or my life.

This time is different. I have chosen a Koi fish for a specific reason, very personal to me.

I just wondered, of those of you who have tattoos....why did you get them? Was it a youthful whim like my existing ones or, was there a deeper meaning, like the one I'm about to get?

Hey,

I actually don't have a tatoo yet but I'd like to offer my insight. Whenever I see people who have nice tats, it adds something really special and beautiful to the person. For that reason, I'm totally planning on getting one soon. The one that I have chosen for myself is something that I have always really liked (a type of lizard) drawn in an art style that I like a lot (mosaic) and one of my close friends is going to draw it for me. And, it'll be in a place on my body that will work practically with my life so that I can cover and show it off at will.

So, I guess it will be meaningful though not so deep that it's really sentimental. Also, the fact that it's drawn by someone I know makes it more unique and personal. And basically, I think that tatoo's are just plain hot. (But, then again, I also love piercings (depending on the piercing/person).

Thats exactly the kind of insight I'm interested in, thank you.

I would be very interested in seeing pictures. I particularly like the fact that your friend will be drawing your design. Do you have any pictures of the type of lizard you're going to have?

I'll be posting some before and after pics myself.

Oh, great! I'm glad that I could contribute. Btw, Koi is a nice idea.

My picture is not finished yet but I can tell you that the lizard is going to be a gecko. And, as I mentioned, it will be in a mosaic style, so it won't look realistic but should still be cool. I've always liked geckos (and many other lizards) but I think what might have sealed the deal was that I spent this past summer in Southeast Asia and they were everywhere. I grew to like them more and more and even started naming the ones that lived in my hotel rooms. (I know...weird.:D) It also doesn't hurt that geckos are pretty cute.

Otherwise, looking forward to your before/after pics!

I did them because they make me look tough and cool. :)

Actually one thing came to mind the other day that I hadn't realized. I have an anchor on my right lower leg and a fish on my right upper arm. Two things have come out of this-I'm a pisces and my last name is Morgan which means 'dweller on the sea'. Slowly I'll get more added to each area.

make sure you have reached your goal weight and stop before you get tats because if you get them while your not so big and become big....look nasty and stretched

Rubbish - a reputable tattooist will ensure that your ink compliments the curves of your muscles whether you grow or not.

Anyway, regarding my tattoos, I only have two but I love them both dearly. I want more tattoos (if i had my way, A LOT more) but every one is deep and meaningful to me.

The one on my right ankle most people find humorus, and even though it was ment to be funny - it wasn't done for humor alone. I have the word "TATTOO" tattoo'ed on my right ankle. My bestfriend and I at the age of 13 jokingly came up with this idea, we remained close for many years, went through a lot with each other, and at 18 both got identical tattoos on our right ankles at a very pivital point in our lives. 4 years later - no regrets.

My second tattoo is a band on my right ring finger, it breaks in the middle in a pattern - an awen. It's a religious symbol that means a lot to me.

You have a tattoo that says 'tattoo'? That is the coolest tattoo I can imagine....this thread is now useless without pictures :D

I don't have them, and I will never get them.

I don't like them.

I'm a purist. No tattoos, no peircings, and I've never even dyed my hair.

There's nothing I find that's meaningful and significant enough for me that I can make it into a singular image to put on my skin until my death.

Meaninless posts often pale in comparison to the one pointing it out.

Not got a tattoo YET, planning on getting a few, but not over doing it. I just want something thats actually got a meaning but dont know yet. I do think they can make a persons image interesting tho.

I second that, I like tattoo's but nothing seems important enough to me to have it perminantly on my body.

It might be that I'm too boring to have anything interesting in my life but I'm hoping it's just because I'm too shallow to hold anything in a high enough regard ;)

If anyone has some cool tattoo ideas that they think match my personality then please post them or PM me :)

Do you wear deodorant and use shampoo?

...I now strike my hand for going off-topic.

Yes I do.

I just don't like the idea of doing something irreversible to my body that will affect the way I look forever. Yes I know, dyed hair can grow out, but it takes a long time for hair to grow.

Two words-tattoo removal.

Speaking of things impacting the way we look forever...I haven't worn earrings in my ears for over 6 years and my students still make comments about me once having pierced ears and why don't I wear earrings.

I don't bring up my nipple rings though.

Because they're for me only, now shush.

I want to kiss you so badly right now.
