Why don't they spin backwards?

I was just curious....

Of all the instructors I've had for spin-class...none of them have had the class peddle backwards on their bikes?

At first it makes no sense, but think about it...most elliptical machines will have you walk backwards to work on the glutes and other stuff. What I've seen in spin are some instructors trying to mix it up and bring something new or interesting to the workout....so why not lighten the load, stop and peddle backwards a bit??????

Is there some reason it's a bad idea or has nobody (I've had) thought of this yet?

The brake on the bikes is mounted in a way that when you brake after pedalling backwards all the cloth pad peels off and it looks like someone has thrown shredded coconut all over the floor!

That could be one reason :D

Peddle backwards on a stationary bike? That can be used for people with bad knees as it is easier on the knee joint. But suggest if you want to mix things up try something else ;)

I have recently started Spinning, and according to the Spinning website:

"Pedaling backward. This movement unscrews the pedals from the crank arms, which can lead to injury when the pedals fall off. Also, researchers have shown that pedaling backward burns the same calories and uses the same muscles as pedaling forward."

HTH

Peddling backwards? This is rather interesting. My bike will allow peddling backwards, its just chillen in the movement that will be the problem........oh, adapt and overcome.....I here the voices now......he, he.......

ROCK IT!

no it's not. the hyperextension, jam it up, and throw yourhip out of socket is way more likely, especially as you fatigue. Try it for 30 minutes.

BUT- when i am in spin class and especially when I spin alone, I do controlled periods of reverse spin. it is critical that you keep your legs under control, or you will throw that bad boy out- and if feels like it is a major injury.

my response is only experience based,

FF

hyperextension :D:D

Are you sure your seat height was corret ;)

On my bike the seat only goes up to a certain extent, I can barely reach the pedals: :)

I dont need to mess up good aging knees....so is going backwards good or bad.....?? What are the true benefits in doing this in the first place?

Best regards

I wouldnt pedel backwards unless instructed by a medical professional.

I just know that sometimes they get patients with arthritis to peddle backwards (very low resistance) to get that range of motion. Although i think that it may increase the force on the petello-femoral joint which may lead to problems :S

GOOD GRIEF Boys,,,, really. you are intellectualizing and chillen is gunna get hurt...

i have done it and relaxed into it, it takes a while, and as I got fluid, or good at it, I relaxed and "wammo, or twang, my knee tried to bend backwards as it came up.

Just think about it OR - GO GET ON THE DANG BIKE and you will see that the momentum is headed forward, and when the knee bends backward. It has to reverse momentum. As soon as you let the leg relax, that momentum is going to go straight in the knee, and as that peddle comes up, you will get a hjammed leg.....

nevermind...... good luck with that

Experimented just a bit ago on my stationary bike real slow, and I dont like it, personally. Seems odd and strange, and a foundation for injury.

I never gave back pedaling much thought thats why I asked about it. I have very good (normal and pain free knees, even after heavy deadlifting, heavy squating, and heavy lunges, runs with the family, and long stationary bike rides) and want to keep that way........:)

Thanks for the Post FF

fluid? lol, do you mean fluent

you have a combative nature, and i am not sure you work out. BUT, I want to take a minute and actually type slowly. This effort on my part is because you are respected by many here and you posted that peddling backwards is better for the joint. AND THAT IS NOT TRUE!

SO- for clarity.

the peddle goes down and then forward taking your leg to straight at the bottom.

the knee needs to bend as the upward motion begins.

in reverse- the foot needs to head backwards because the knee bends to the rear........

YOU KNOW WHAT!!! SCREW THIS!!!!

your WRONG!

Go break a sweat dude, somewhere other than between your fingers!

I never said it was better for the joint, just that some people get patients with arthritis to pedel backwards - WITH LITTLE OR NO RESISTANCE. Purely for range of motion and less friction between the femoral condyles and tibia.

all im saying is if what i read is true (which i suspect is true, because someone with arthritis of the knee can in a matter of seconds figure out which rotation induces more pain) than it may be beneficial for this particular case, but otherwise it isnt for an otherwise healthy/normal individual.

break a sweat other than on my finger? haa nice one *rolls eyes

I get rather wound up at times.

when you said peddling backwards is "better" on the joint I DIALED IN ON YOU!

:jump1:

on top of that I spent 6 hours at the dropzone and didn't get to jump.

SO-you got a bit of my pent up energy and me sayin anything about you personally was not necessary- even if i am right ;)

:11doh:

i sure like havin all these smiley thingys!
I can be a real asyholey and pad it with :azzangel: the real me! hehehe

Dude??????? Put the crack-pipe down and step away from the keyboard :D :D :D

There must be some history here that I'm obviously unaware of. It's just a forum and we're just chatting.....

FF, why do you so often finish your post with "I'm just going by experience" or make other self-degrading comments like "I don't have an education". Did someone attack you in the past or make you feel like your opinion doesn't count? You can out-run, out-pace and out-perform just about everyone on this forum....your opinion is relevant and doesn't need to be issued conditionally. Where's the love?

M'kay then.....

Like I said (or wrote)...my elliptical machine prompts me to walk backwards and indicates benefits to other muscles groups...so I was just wondering if the same concept could/would apply to the spin-bike, that's all. Just looking to mix it up. I'm sure Sparrow will chirp-in some illuminating commentary.

FF.......;)

I'm feeling too lazy to read all the replies but we peddle backwards in our cool down and one day our instructor told us that he knows of another instructor who once did a whole 45 minute class backwards! I imagine it would get quite interesting when everyones out of the saddle :jump1:

I can understand what you're saying FF. Even on the eliptical sometimes we can let our legs get caught in a straight leg position when going in reverse. Its not the norm so we dont have the same control.

Nice post Der.

I recently found out after cranking on one of my pedals trying to remove it, when the other one came off just fine, the pedals are threaded two different directions. They are threaded so as you pedal forward the force is tightening the thread. Pedaling backwards, after a while, may cause the pedals to unthread.

The right pedal, turn right to tighten. The left pedal, turn left to tighten. I learned this the hard way.

Haha nice one dork!

Yeah they do have inverted threads on bikes.
