Why are public gyms so popular?

There is nothing wrong with my equipment, perhaps I'm able to exploit the versatility of dumbbells better than you are.
And I paid under $90, as I inherited the plates.
I never said I bought an entire gym, not only could I not afford that, I would find most of the equipment redundant and unnessceary.
I have a few dumbbells, a barbell, a bench, a homemade calf block and gloves... I don't know why I would need anything else.

Maybe YOU don't need anything else, but it is presumptuous to think that everyone else would be OK with that. I can see quite a few things I would add myself to what you listed.

If you think you're so mighty, then what is a muscle group you can't exercise with dumbbells?
That's just what I use, it's beyond me why you're getting deffensive over it, and seemingly assume that dumbbells can't build muscle.

Just a guess, but your quite young aren't you?

You do understand that gyms offer more then a handful of second hand weights don't you? those big blocks of plastic with flashy computerised 1980's style electronic number boards, they are called machines, they work your heart and help you to boost your weight loss. These cost quite a bit more then $250 (or £130).

Have you ever tried more then weights in a gym?

And TBH I don't see why you need to use weights, just get yourself a sand bag and get a job in building sky scrapers, plenty to lift there and you don't even have to pay $90 to do it- infact, they will pay you.

I don't understand why people have home gyms..... (LOL!)

My dumbbells are adjustable. I've doubled their weight since I started using them, I don't see why I really need anything else, as I'm perfectly happy with what I have. I'm not going to spend money on solid dumbbells until I reach the weight I want.
And there is no point to this thread... it's deviated too far from the OP.

No sh!t? Can we see your huge muscles that you have built with your 25 lbs dumbbells?

No ****, can we see some respect for other members?

Even if we disagree he's not being rude or mean in any way. He's honest with us all and keeps coming back. That's pretty neat.

I see guys like Xerxes . I would like to see Xerxes muscles/pics to prove his point wouldn't you? There's no dis-respect if someone says they have built muscle and I (or we) would like some proof.

No I wouldn't, I would like to see Xerxes start a journal and read around some more, become part of our little family of regular posters, and reach his goals. That's what I want for everyone.

But I see guys like you all the time too. Who come here, think they are better than a lot of people (especially the beginners or misinformed) and act like jerks. You have been extremely rude to more than one person and you have under 20 posts. As soon as you think you know better you are rude and insulting. Chill out, if you think someone is that stupid leave them alone. Why did you join here in the first place? Go after whatever that goal was and stop building yourself up as someone no one wants to talk to.

Hey Miss Piggy, you are starting to make a fool outa yourself. Haven't you got something better to do? Learn how to spell for one and secondly let internet discussions flow. Who The F*** are you? A mod or some primadonness?

Who said I was trying to look like a pro bodybuilder? I'm not, I just lift weights for recreation and fun.
And I don't use 25 pound dumbbells, though even if I/someone did, what differnace would it really make? In the end, everyone dies and rots away the same.
If you need to get on here and make fun of people who lift less weight than you in order to make you fell superior, perhaps you need to work on your self-esteem.

^^
I could also use my bicycle for free.

And the treadmill? (I have VERY pale skin and don't run outside alot as I burn, I dislike having to coat myself in SPF which costs alot of money to keep applying)
And the elliptical machine? (one which doesn't feel so frail you can't go very fast) and the power plate? (for stretching- 60 second stretch per pose on the power plate is way better then even 2 mins without) and the rower? and the stairmaster? (find me a set of upward steps which last for half an hour), swimming pool, jaquzzi and the gym balls? and the medicine balls? and the free sky? free towels? lack of electricity bill? the cleaners? the free shampoo, conditioner and body wash? the free sauna, steam room and monthly massage? the free internet, coffee/tea and service with a smile?.....List goes on.

Nope, couldn't do it for £250, and thats without the weights!

Each to their own but theres more to the gym then a set of dumbells, if it were that basic I could see your point, I don;t think you should join a gym if all your gonna do is a few mins of weight lifting but if like me you do use the entire thing, spend a serious amount of time there every week (10-15 hours) its well worth the fee.

Crazy talk. Water jugs, tool boxes, vehicles, tires, furniture, even the kids make great workout utensils. I do better without all the pampering, free showering supplies, and air conditioning. Besides, I'd pay the extra $ .50 to wash my own towels in exchange for not having to put up with jackasses standing around equipment talkin about who looks better in a speedo.

I go to a gym because it's not practical for me to have a home gym. I don't have room in the house for it and the temperature is to hot in the summer for outside.

The equipment at the gym is way better than what I could afford to put at my house any way. I like mixing it up with the different things available. I haven't been going to the gym for that long yet but I like doing it this way better than the workouts I used to do at home. The home thing got boring doing the same things with the same weights at the same place by myself.

Same as what I said. But it would appear this is not about why everyone else would go to a gym, it is about why the OP would ever consider going to a gym. We have all tried to explain why we go to a gym rather then have our own gyms, yet on each reply the OP has simply said "but I can get that from a friend for free, from walmart for half the price, can use an old x,y,z to do the same thing" (or words to that effect), it would appear this is not a question to us about ourselves, but a question to us about the OP.

Confused? so am I!!

The question is "Why are public gyms so popular?" which is what I answered. The OP gave reasons why they don't like going to the gym. I gave my reasons for going to a gym instead of having a gym at my house.

I know this but it just seems to me that the OP asked the question and seemed confused as THEY had all the gym equiptment (or could get that equiptment) at a cheap price through friends or wherever known to them. It didn't seem like an open question, it seemed more like "I don't understand why I should go to a public gym when I have everything I need at home". Just seemed a bizarre post thats all!

In general, this thread seems like a bomb waiting to go off. Seriously, what kind of person goes onto a fitness forum and basically bashes the idea of going to a gym? Nothing he posted was outright inflammatory, but there are hints of snobbery about the way some things are worded. Whether intended or not, some of his comments come across as, "I don't have to go to the gym to stay in shape and I look down at those who do." Again- not sure I see the point in the discussion as a whole.

It just makes me laugh! Its just a thread from someone who either had too much to drink and got bored or is just too young to comprehend that not everyone is the same and not everyone has a mate named joe who can get us all the equiptment we need to the price of the daily paper.

Wierd and funny and the same time!
