who loves Classical?

I just recently got into Classical music and I think i'm in love. Does anyone have any artist recomendations? I love Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, and Rachmaninov, but I feel like I should add more to the mix tape of amazingness. Also, I play the guitar, but i'm also thinking about learning the violin. Does anyone play this instrument? Any tips if you do?

I love classical music and took classical piano and opera lessons as a kid. My father wanted to live vicariously through me, but I chose sports instead :D

There are TONS of beautiful classical albums out there. It depends on what you like. What instruments do you like to hear? What particular era of classical music do you prefer?

I also like the composers you have mentioned, but I also enjoy Albinoni, Pachelbel, Wagner, Vivaldi, Francisco Tarrega, Rodrigo, Handel, Paganini, Rossini, Schubert, Chopin, Johann Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss.

Anything you can get that was conducted by Herbert von Karajan (he's long dead, but one of the greatest conductors in the world) will be unbelievably amazing. He had a touch not many conductors have. Almost all of his work has been digitally remastered and put on CD.

If you are motivated, you can play any instrument, so if you want to learn how to play the violin, by all means, do it :)

Chopin, Dvorak, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, basically what ILM said.

Then there's instrumentals/orchestral, and there, Ennio Morricone is king :D

The other week I was doing turkish get ups to Dvorak's New World Symphony. **** was win.

Welcome to (what I hope will be) a lifelong addiction. My suggestion? Start going to concerts - orchestral, chamber, opera, you name it. And use recordings to fill in the blind spots. If a suitable repertoire isn't available live, then look at recordings to meet your needs. What works have you heard by the composers listed? Bach? for any one piece you can name, there's about 3 or 4 that you really should hear as well. The same goes for any of the other major composers. That said, try not to neglect chamber works, as they tend to be overlooked when people new to classical music start buying recordings. I'd challenge anyone to find more beautiful music than the slow movement to Brahms Clarinet Sonata for example. Also, try some of the lesser known composers too - Ives, Hanson, Adams, Reich, Torke (yes, all modern, all American, and all worthy of leaving your earprints on).

As for an instrument I've been taking classical piano for the past few years. Learning Bach's 2 Part Inventions at the moment. Listening to recordings is one thing, but you don't really understand the genius before you until you try to play these pieces in their entirety.

If you wish particular CD recommendations, I'd be happy to oblige - esp if you can provide a direction you'd like to go in musically.

Morning mood from the play Peer Gynt. Music by Edvard Grieg. Basically anything from that play is pretty cool :p

Hey! Norway's pretty much only got one, so I'm obligated to bring him up.

Bores me to death! But also the same can stand opera but only for a limited time then i start to go insane...

I feel that way about most modern music. Three or four notes into the song you know how the rest is going to go. ho hum.

Some classical absolutely blows. I'm really picky when it comes to what I like in music.

Ditto for opera. I can't sit through a whole opera without wishing I was in a coma. Hence the reason I chose sports ;)

Some opera singers sound like they're screaming or they have that high-pitched tone that sends me right round the bed. Opera is not pleasant to listen to unless the singers are very, very good.

If Sarah Brightman had sung opera when I was growing up, I probably would have pursued it. I really love her voice.

wow, I didn't expect to hear from so many classical junkies. I thought i was weird for beign obsessed with lifting and Classical haha. Stingo, I agree with you. Modern music is boring. I have some modern bands that I do enjoy, however. Rap..uhg. After listening to Classical music rap makes me shudder...

You might be inspired by the Ride of the Valkyries by Wagner (you already know the song, but you probably didn't know who wrote it or what the name was):

This gives me goosebumps ;)

Without operatic additions:

Wtf is up with music nowadays where the "artist" synths up their voice so hard it sounds like they have pneumonia and are on their death beds? T-pain, lilwayne, and all those other idiots who are the same. Hate. It.

Amen dude. Lil Wayne really boils my blood haha. It's so annoying because I live in the south and you see red necks(well, we have 'pretend rednecks' in my school) blaring lil wayne out of their lifted trucks. I think that's pretty ironic.

I do. Which is why I can't listen to Animal Collective, despite my friend's persistent pushing.
