What type of beef do you eat?

So, in my English class, we've been reading the book "The Omnivore's Dilemma". The first section of the book describes the industrial aspects of our food chain and how corn plays a huge role in the making of our food. A large section of the first part describes how corn fed cows are raised and why it's bad for the environment and our health. It seems to promote grass fed beef and suggests that it tastes better than corn fed in addition to being healthier.

For my class, we had to do some type of investigation of industrial food. Some people chose to investigate fast food restaurants or the ingredients in everyday food and if they are derived from corn. I wanted to figure out what kind of flavor difference there was between cheap corn fed beef, natural/organic corn fed beef and grass fed beef. I set up an experiment with my mom. We went out and bought regular ground beef, kosher ground beef and grass fed ground beef. We numbered each one without knowing which was which. (We were able to figure out in the end with a post-it note on the bottom of each plate revealing the identity of the beef). I cooked all of them identically, and then we taste tested them.

I was surprised that my favorite was the kosher corn fed beef and my least favorite was the grass fed. I fully expected the grass fed to taste better.

It was a really fun experiment and it made me want to ask all of the beef-eaters here what type of beef they buy and why?

So, if you eat beef, what kind do you buy and why? It it taste, price, health?

I'm curious.

i very rarely eat red meat but when i do i tend to choose rump beef from grass fed purely for the taste.Over here in england in te last few days weve been bombarded with news reports of new evidence linking red meat and bacon to cancer so for the moment ill stick to white meat and fish:)

No such thing as corn fed beef here in New Zealand, 100% grass fed and we have been voted as having the best meat in the world on Numerous occasions. Its shipped all over the world!

I grew up on a farm and my father was a butcher so I always ate our own stock. I love a good steak.

We have? Good job I've never taken dietary advice from a newspaper :)

Regarding Beef - UK cows are fed on a mix of grass and mixed up crap of questionable origin.
I don't know if grass fed is best but grass is a cows prefered diet

A friend of mine has been telling me about that book for weeks. I should read it.

The beef over here usually turns out to be water buffalo, pretty tasty though.

I have no idea what they are fed.

I eat 96% lean ground beef, eye of round, top round, bottom round, occasionally sirloin and flat half brisket

My favorite beef is the dead kind. Ha-ha!

Seriously, though, I don't eat much red meat - maybe once or twice a week tops.

If I'm making a stir-fry or fajita or anything in that ballpark, I try to go with bison if available. If not, I look for leanest cut dead cow possible.

I don't really buy ground beef unless I'm hosting/cooking for others and making meatballs. For myself, I only eat turkey burgers.

And if I just want meat for its own sake, I'll typically just buy veal chops or steak cut (cow) or on a rare occasion a round/brisket for a 'roast beef sandwich.' When I hit this craving, I check out what's going on with my protein, iron, and B vitamin levels, because it's usually an indication of a deficiency in one (or more) of those three.

I eat whatever type of beef I can get my hands on. MMMMMMM.......

my least favorite was the grass fed

Grass fed cows are leaner. Fat is where the taste comes from. :D

I base everything on taste. I figure if it does not taste good, it is not worth eating.

My favorite cuts of beef -

Ribeye Steaks
Porterhouse Steaks
The Beast. (that is what we call it. It is a whole beef tenderloin, and is friggin' awesome)

We use ground beef for burgers, taco salad, stuff like that.

Everything I buy is just the normal kind, not grass fed or organic or anything.

NBS, I didn't eat red meat for almost ten years until I spent six months in NZ. Then, one drunken night, in an alleyway in Queenstown, I tried a burger from Fergburger (you know of it?). It was amazing! I went back the next day sober to see if it was really as good as I thought it was. And indeed it was. In fact, it was better!!! After that I tried a selection of NZ beef, and I have to concur it is the best I have ever eaten. So my vote goes to the grass fed beef. (Though as a student I can't really afford it right now...)

Spicy, I think your meat taste-tasting sounds exactly like something Pollan would do himself!

I just checked, mine says grain fed. I guess that's corn

My theory: we tend to like the taste of meat when the animal ate things we would eat. That's why some meats are "gamey" they might eat strange plants, grubs etc. under that line of thinking I'd have to say grain fed would be tastier than grass fed

It was funny because the grass fed had the highest percentage of fat of all three.

I generally do not eat Beef. No real reason, but I just prefer Turkey, Chicken, Salmon, Tuna, and other types of fish for lean protein sources.

Best wishes to all of you,

Chillen

I'm not really a regular beef eater myself. I don't really like most meat besides fish. I'm fine with poultry as long as it's not really dry. There's nothing worse than dry chicken or turkey.

The only meat that I try to avoid as much as possible is pork. It tastes pretty bad to me, but sometimes I'll be eating something that has bacon hidden in it as a flavor enhancer. But I'll never eat a pork chop or loin or anything.

try a lean tender loin,, put i6t in a glass pan, with a dash of water, and bury it in orange, lemon, and line slices. Very good!!

yep the FF'er cooks now.

did hear that Gooch!!! I can razz the mommy boy, cuz I have been one for a few weeks now.

Even if it tastes good, (which I've never really had good tasting pork), I don't really like the idea of eating it. First of all, I like pigs, they're cute. And second, it's not supposed to be that good for you. My dad gets sick when he eats large amounts of it, and my aunt cut it out of her diet completely and her health drastically improved.

I guess the pigs being cute excuse isn't a good one because I think chickens are the cutest animals on earth and I still eat chicken. Cows are pretty cute too, and I eat those. :)

I'm on a bulk and to meet my protein req's i gotta take in all the meat ( beef, chicken, turkey, fish) I can get, so i don't care what type of beef it is. But I DONT eat those fast food fried/cooked type of beef. And i don't eat too much of beef anyway, mainly chicken/turkey/fish

... that was pretty much a set up for the Out of Context thread.
