What is an exercise I can substitute for running until i lose 60 pounds?

I can watlz..does that count?

If you speed waltz!:p

im with the speed walking or the cycling idea. Thats what i did. Im finally able to run now which is awesome :D

i would start with walking. you say you walk everywhere already, but what about hitting a treadmill for 30mins/day? i can only achieve 60% of max heart rate walking on a flat surface, and that's really fast.

on a treadmill put the incline to as high as it can go, and start walking, you won't have to go very fast before your heartrate is in the 80%+ range, start with maybe 2.5MPH. and you'll build bigass muscles, which also burn calories. once you get your endurance up, you'll you'll notice you'll have to increase the speed to keep your heartrate up. eventually you'll be jogging!

Just start off slow. I know when i started i was damned impressed to run 1km a day 2X a week. Then I started a regime of squats lunges and serious stretching 2X a week also and it all came together. Took me till now to be able to do the whole 6km straight through without taking walkin breaks a couple of times in between.

I hope it works for ya. I am beginning to understand the addiction thing. Even when I try to find excuses not to run, I still do. I ran home in the pouring rain the other day by wrapping my backpack in plastic garbage bags. Have since bought a snazzy little Nike running bag which has a built in backpack rain coat. Now I look forward to running in the pouring rain.

sirant

i know what you mean about becoming addicted. i did a couch-to-5k program and i ran, even on the days when i just felt like.."arghhhh..i really don't wanna do this" and after i did..i was pumped. i too have been out in the pouring rain with my hat and poncho (lookin' for a good running jacket). i haven't ran in the past 1 1/2 weeks and i can really tell. i'm not a very fast runner, but it definitely is doing things for me, b/c in this time i haven't been running i just feel like crap-ola. anyway - monday, i'm back at it.
i haven't tried squats or anything to help with my leg strength, etc., but some friends on another forum, definitely recommend squats for ultimate leg strength & to improve running. oh yeah...and i'm currently 266 and i run with no problems, but i'm very picky about my warmup and stretching, b/c i don't want injuries. i haven't noticed significant weight loss from the running yet, but i know that's mostly b/c my diet's been out of wack also.
anyway - for those that wanna run...try it...do 30 secs at a time and go from there. that's how i started out and now i can run close to 3 miles.
good luck!
