When I was 80 pounds lighter, i was an avid runner- if i go out running now,at my current weight, ill probrolly blow out my knees- i wont run again until im 60 pounds lighter-
in the meantime, what is a good exercise that can be an alternative to running, that is a goot fat burner, and wont destroy my knees?
Jogging/running was the most effective exercise for me to lose weight- but it will kill my knees if i do it at my current weight. Any suggestions?

what's wrong with walking?

If you have access to an elliptical machine, those work well and burn a lot of calories. I have just been walking which is really nice and its nice on my knees (I tried running and like you, it hurt my knees). Also stairs are a GREAT exercise and it doesnt take long to really get a good workout.

I would also consider speed walking. Not to the point of running or jogging but enough to get your heart rate up to burn calories.

Pick up the pace on your walking... you might see more results...

Walking has been my sole form of cardio for the past year - in addition to weight lifting (but that's only been the past 5 months ish and I still suck at it) and it's been effective for me..

Well when you are walking you are burning calories...which is the only thing that matters with weight loss. Your body is still getting something from walking. There arent specific exercises that are "fat burners", just some that burn more calories than others. But if you arent happy with just walking and you want something more intense then thats fine :)

I would opt for riding the stationary bike. But I am boring and straight to the point.

Swimming is good too, I just don't like getting wet all of the time. :D

other than running

sex, sex, and more sex. There a book out there that tells you how to lose weight having sex, the author was on Ophra.

Whats your weight?

I used to think the same thing. I would have to lose 50 pounds before I could run. I am currently 249 pounds and have been running everyday for the past month. And you are absolutely correct, I am losing weight like never before. April is turning into a 12 pound month. I of course walked more and more each day and then started doing a lot of leg strengthening and stretching and low and behold, I can run 6km everyday and aside from the odd ache or cramp, I am fine.

At first I had no faith and thought I would kill myself, but I kept hearing from other people that had lost weight that running was exactly what worked for them. Truth be told, I have cut down on the weight training, aerobics and yoga, but continued running, and I am losing weight faster than ever.

Maybe once you feel strong enough you could do a few light jogs in the grass and work your way 1. 1 time a week, 1,3, etc. Worked for me and I am so thankful because of it (and 50 lbs lighter;))

mabey i should give it a go- 10 years ago in college I was 10 pounds overweight- i got into running, and not only did I lose all my weight- i beacme a running addict- of course I was 190 pounds then (which is thin at my height and frame-My lowest weight was 179, and my ribs were showing at that point), and today i'm 280 (at height of 6'3)
I want to get down at lest to 200.

When i ran, my fat melted away- I do long distance walking all the time, but walking isnt doing squat in regards to burning my fat...

Surel, Why not?

Just start off slow. I know when i started i was damned impressed to run 1km a day 2X a week. Then I started a regime of squats lunges and serious stretching 2X a week also and it all came together. Took me till now to be able to do the whole 6km straight through without taking walkin breaks a couple of times in between.

I hope it works for ya. I am beginning to understand the addiction thing. Even when I try to find excuses not to run, I still do. I ran home in the pouring rain the other day by wrapping my backpack in plastic garbage bags. Have since bought a snazzy little Nike running bag which has a built in backpack rain coat. Now I look forward to running in the pouring rain.

Wow Sirant, you started out running 1km? thats impressive lol. I can barely do half a lap around the track (though I havent tried running in about 2 months)

Maybe I'll give it a go again in about 20lbs lol. I would love to be able to run long distance.

Well.....

Keep in mind, that 1km run was 300 meters running and 500 meters walking, panting and wheezing, then forcing myself to do it all over again 2 more times. I felt a little self conscious doing it at first, as being a big white guy in China people stare anyways. Being a big overweight guy jiggling along was even more entertaining. But I got over it and slowly but surely it became a solid 1km (before the panting and weezing).

I think that is probably one of the biggest lessons I learned. If I set my expectations too high, I only doom myself to failure. At first I thought my running was pathetic and worthless because it was such a short distance and not even a full km, but luckily for me I kept trying.

I like to look at it like this too, in the past, had a tiger come jumping out of the bushes I would have been a big easy meal. Now I would be able to give that tiger at least a little run for his money. Probably even taste better now that my diet has improved so much.... Now I COULD run a mile to save my life, something I couldnt have done 2 months ago...... Hey, whats that over there in the bushes growling...... ;)

Dancing. Either join classes (like for swing dancing which is a great workout) or just dance for ten minutes to your favorite cd.

I dance in the basement where no one can see me. :D It's a great way to burn calories!

-Swimming
-Elliptical
-Tae Bo/Aerobics/Kickboxing
-Speedwalking-aim for less than 15 min. miles

Basically what everyone else has mentioned. Good luck!
