What do you believe?

I know this is a touchy subject for most.. It is not ment to offend anyone.

What do you believe in? Do you believe that there is a God. If so why? What is the view you have on religion. If you don't believe in God, why not.

Please explain in much detail the belief's you have. If you are confused, or have no clue- try to explain why you are confused? What makes you question religion/ God/ the faith that alot of others have.

ANY views/ comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't beleive that there is an all powerful diety up in the heavens or tahiti or wherever he/she might be listening and answering prayers - People make things happen for themselves - it's not a god that does that makes it happen for them...

I have a very harsh view of most christian-types I've come across because I've found them to be incredibly hypocrital - I grew up Catholic, but I've seen it in every religion - these people thump the bible on Sunday and invoke god or jesus for every little thing -but these same people don't practice what they preach - the golden rule doesn't seem to apply to them...

Believe what you want to believe... if a belief in a higher power gets a person thru the day more power to them doesn't hurt anyone... and if it makes them feel better - why not... - but - and like George Carlin says - there should be an additional commandment - Thou Shalt Keep thy religion to thyself..

Well, this is why I ask.

I wasn't raised to go to church, but I was raised around people did. So I went. I live in a small town, and mostly everyone here is Christian. So, since 5th or 6th grade, I have always believed those views- the past few years though I have questioned what I really believed in, never out loud but in my head. For the past few weeks I have been struggling with - " Is it ok for me to question this? I have believed in it for so long... but now I have my doubts. That is a scary thing." or " Will I be punished for doubting or questioning my beliefs?"

I just really want some piece of mind with this subject, I want to believe there is something more or there is nothing at all. I want to live my life without the fear of what could happen if I don't believe a certain thing.

I also want to believe that you "live on" in some sort of way when you die, but there is no evidence to that. I find myself thinking that, after you die thats the end. That frightens me too.

I guess this thread is more to help me be open about this, because I am honestly am afraid too. People here or most of them think " If you don't believe in God , then you are going to hell."

I hope I don't sound to crazy.

What a person believes is truly personal - you can pray to the shrub in the backyard if that makes you feel better...

Religion/Faith/Belief should make a person feel better and I think as situations change, as a person gets more life experience those beliefs change.

When I'm asked about my religion, I always refer to myself as a recovering Catholic... I had religion force fed to me... and used to get in trouble for questioning it... not from my parents who encouraged learning, but from the nuns and lay teachers...

I had more than one nun tell me that I was going to hell because I didn't do my homework or because I sassed someone or because I questioned something... upteen years later, if there is indeed a hell, I know I'm headed there... because heaven is only for people who are truly good, and I'm not... there'd be a place in heaven for me if I was repentent about my behavior but I'm not sorry... so I am going to hell - I'm OK iwtht that -I know all the cool people will be there waiting for me :D and besides, after some fothe things I've been thru in my life -hell won't be so bad... long as there's coffee :D

But I joke -I do that... :D

Beliefs should be questioned... and that's what used to get me into a lot of trouble in grammar school - that because I questioned things I didn't have Faith... the two, in the eyes of the faculty at Most Blessed Sacrament the two were mutually exclusive - took me a number of years to realize that they were different... I cant quite articulate how they are different but they are...

It's nice to know that someone else questions there beliefs, I am sure alot of people do.. but people here put on this cover, like they can walk on water honestly! Growing up, I was always told my sister would go to hell because of how she is. People literally tried to scare me for so long with that, and being young you believe what others tell you. I kept thinking - If my sister doesn't change or my mom doesn't pray they are going to hell! I guess that kind of thinking kept me going and not questioning anything ya know?

but anyways, thanks for the opinion Mal :D

Hey !

My situation is kind of similar. I was born and raised in england and lived there 18 years, my parents were church of england but we only went to church on Christmas, easter and harvest festival.
I was actually never baptized so im not officially a religion. When i moved to America i was overwhelmed, It seemed EVERYONE knew their beliefs and were strict church going, bible following Christians. Having come from somewhere where the church is basically dead (on most services there'll be a few 80yrd old couples etc in the Sunday worship), to somewhere where church is the main activity on a Sunday was very strange.

My boyfriend is Christian and his family go to church every Sunday, naturally we have been too a few times but i always feel kind of awkward when im there. Its not that i feel like i don't belong, but just that i don't KNOW my exact beliefs so maybe i shouldn't be praying and such until i do. I used to attend a private school when i was young and we'd attend a small church service every Tuesday, i was very young so don't remember much but that was only church going phase in life really. We live an hour from my boyfriends parents so don't attend church weekly with them, and were normally too busy to go in this town.

As for MY beliefs? well. im very confused. i Believe in god, i love to think there's someone up there watching over all of us who has some kind of plan, the idea of us humans being all alone is scary. So yes i believe in god. I however take a sort of scientific approach on the rest, like some of the 'miracles' i question, and the authenticity of the stories in the bible i dont feel comfortable quoting as fact. For these reasons it upsets me when people make me feel bad about my life choices, when they live their lives by this book. People who don't believe in tattoos, sex before marriage and such. There has only been one person to actually say something to me about this, but when i walk into church i just feel glares and that people are looking down upon me.

There has been time when ive been so overcome by church and close to tears when people have been reading from sermons, but other times when i feel so awkward because i feel like the only one whose belief isint set in stone.

So to make a long babble short. I believe in God. I 'think' i would call myself christian, but im not getting baptized until im 100% sure. I havent completely found god yet, and from what alot of people say it will happen, its just a matter of time for him to reach into my life and for my belief to blossom. I question the bible, and believe its old scripture should be made relative to the modern world we live in. Also it is a common belief around here if you dont accept Jesus as your saviour you'll go to hell. That makes me feel SO pressured to grasp this thought i just dont know where to look to find him. Maybe one day it will fall into place

:)

His family sounds like everyone here ;). Not a bad thing, because like Mal said- I won't judge anyone for what they believe in, it it makes them feel better I encourage it.

Like in your last paragraph, I do to feel pressed to not question or not believe what everyone else does. I am coming to terms with if I believe in something I want it to be because I truly feel its whats real- not because I am so frightened into believing it.. as I have done for the past years..

I hope you figure everything out! I know it bothers me to not be at peace with the subject and not have a solid grasp on what I feel. :hug2:

Don't let it bother you - just let what you feel come to you - I'm not sure that you really have to have a black and white answer to the question...

You can be spiritual, having a belief in God or a higher power, but not have an actual label on it... it's like a lot of things, when you're ready, you'll know what the answer is.

As I said in your diary, explore other religions, including the not so mainstream ones, you might find one that speaks to you - but you also do not need to label yourself as religion XX - spiritual with a belief in a higher power - whatever that higher power might be is perfectly acceptable.

I have a weird outlook on this subject!I can't say i don't believe but I can say I don't UNDERSTAND why so many religions, churches, preacher's when there is 1 you worship?OK and for the BIBLE who knows if everything in there is 100% truth it's a book and I am sure people back then just like today fib lies ect? I go rarely to bibleschool when the kids put on a play or something and they preach for a sec then here comes the OFFERING plate then preach again then again OFFERINGS again I dunno I feel it's a big money scam.
Also BACK then the beliefes were kind of dumb in my eyes there is 1 religion(no offense any1) you shouldn't eat pork unclean animal or whatnot well what a dumb belief today when there are much bigger things happening in the year 2000!!New 10 commandments should be written with a few to stay

THAT SHALL NOT STEAL
THAT SHALL NOT LIE
THAT SHALL NOT GO TO WAR OVER OIL AND MAKE UP THAT THERE ARE WEAPONDS OF MASS DESTRUCTION (OOPS):argue:
THAL SHALL NOT MURDER

THOU SHALL NOT TREAT THEIR FAMILIES LIKE CRAP
THOU SHALL NOT COMITT ADULTRY
You get the point don't ya?Anyway this is just an opion and nt meant to upset anyone Tammy

This is an interesting discussion - and I don't really want to derail it with a joke -but I love george Carlin's bit on the 10 commandments and totally agree :)

EORGE CARLIN ON THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
from "Complaints and Grievances" (HBO special)

Here is my problem with the ten commandments- why exactly are there 10?

You simply do not need ten. The list of ten commandments was artificially and deliberately inflated to get it up to ten. Here's what happened:

About 5,000 years ago a bunch of religious and political hustlers got together to try to figure out how to control people and keep them in line. They knew people were basically stupid and would believe anything they were told, so they announced that God had given them some commandments, up on a mountain, when no one was around.

Well let me ask you this- when they were making this shit up, why did they pick 10? Why not 9 or 11? I'll tell you why- because 10 sound official. Ten sounds important! Ten is the basis for the decimal system, it's a decade, it's a psychologically satisfying number (the top ten, the ten most wanted, the ten best dressed). So having ten commandments was really a marketing decision! It is clearly a bullshit list. It's a political document artificially inflated to sell better. I will now show you how you can reduce the number of commandments and come up with a list that's a little more workable and logical. I am going to use the Roman Catholic version because those were the ones I was taught as a little boy.

Let's start with the first three:

I AM THE LORD THY GOD THOU SHALT NOT HAVE STRANGE GODS BEFORE ME

THOU SHALT NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD THY GOD IN VAIN

THOU SHALT KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH

Right off the bat the first three are pure bullshit. Sabbath day? Lord's name? strange gods? Spooky language! Designed to scare and control primitive people. In no way does superstitious nonsense like this apply to the lives of intelligent civilized humans in the 21st century. So now we're down to 7. Next:

HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER

Obedience, respect for authority. Just another name for controlling people. The truth is that obedience and respect shouldn't be automatic. They should be earned and based on the parent's performance. Some parents deserve respect, but most of them don't, period. You're down to six.

Now in the interest of logic, something religion is very uncomfortable with, we're going to jump around the list a little bit.

THOU SHALT NOT STEAL

THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS

Stealing and lying. Well actually, these two both prohibit the same kind of behavior- dishonesty. So you don't really need two you combine them and call the commandment "thou shalt not be dishonest". And suddenly you're down to 5.

And as long as we're combining I have two others that belong together:

THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTRY

THOU SHALT NOT COVET THY NEIGHBOR'S WIFE

Once again, these two prohibit the same type of behavior. In this case it is marital infidelity. The difference is- coveting takes place in the mind. But I don't think you should outlaw fantasizing about someone else's wife because what is a guy gonna think about when he's waxing his carrot? But, marital infidelity is a good idea so we're gonna keep this one and call it "thou shalt not be unfaithful". And suddenly we're down to four.

But when you think about it, honesty and infidelity are really part of the same overall value so, in truth, you could combine the two honesty commandments with the two fidelity commandments and give them simpler language, positive language instead of negative language and call the whole thing "thou shalt always be honest and faithful" and we're down to 3.

THOU SHALT NOT COVET THY NEIGHBOR"S GOODS

This one is just plain fuckin' stupid. Coveting your neighbor's goods is what keeps the economy going! Your neighbor gets a vibrator that plays "o come o ye faithful", and you want one too! Coveting creates jobs, so leave it alone. You throw out coveting and you're down to 2 now- the big honesty and fidelity commandment and the one we haven't talked about yet:

THOU SHALT NOT KILL

Murder. But when you think about it, religion has never really had a big problem with murder. More people have been killed in the name of god than for any other reason. All you have to do is look at Northern Ireland, Cashmire, the Inquisition, the Crusades, and the World Trade Center to see how seriously the religious folks take thou shalt not kill. The more devout they are, the more they see murder as being negotiable. It depends on who's doin the killin' and who's gettin' killed. So, with all of this in mind, I give you my revised list of the two commandments:

Thou shalt always be honest and faithful to the provider of thy nookie.

&

Thou shalt try real hard not to kill anyone, unless of course they pray to a different invisible man than you.

Two is all you need; Moses could have carried them down the hill in his fuckin' pocket. I wouldn't mind those folks in Alabama posting them on the courthouse wall, as long as they provided one additional commandment:

Thou shalt keep thy religion to thyself.

I think humans are selfish. We don't want to die. We want part of ourselves to live forever. We want to feel like we left a mark on the world... And we don't want to feel like our life had no meaning. I think this is how religion came to be. People want to feel there is a driving force guiding them and fear of the unknown makes us desire an afterlife. I'm an aetheist, if ya can't tell. This is just my personal opinion; I'm not gonna hate on anyone... except extremists maybe.

I am very similar to fayefaye. I grew up 'Catholic'. Both of my parents grew up in Catholic schools. But we never went to church except on Christmas and Easter. I was baptized, but I never made communion. So I don't consider myself a catholic-and I am sure the church wouldn't recognize me either. Here is my problem with religion....I feel you can believe what you want to believe and God will still love you(yes I believe there is a God). I don't believe you have to attend a physical church gathering. It is very personal. I also have a hard time with the bible. I look at it this way...there are how many religions out there(so many under the Christian philospophy such as Catholic, Lutheran, and such) so who is to say which one is correct? I too believe that years ago people wanted to put fear in others so they did this by writing what they believed. Others followed but wrote what they believed(creating a new religion). My husband was raised Muslim. He doesn't practice anything except for the not eating pork. Don't ask me why. He pretty much feels the same as me, but he has more guilt about it. Especially not wanting to disappoint his family.

I don't like the concept of expecting money from parishoners. I live in an area that is surrounded by Catholic churches and one is so money hungery it disgusts me.

The one thing I like in some churches is the feeling of community That is about it.

I am glad to see this topic was very well handled. No one is judging...that is how life should be.

my parents are very active in their church - and they live in a fairly well off community where the church is definitely not hurting... a town or two away, is a very depressed area, that the church last winter had no money to pay the gas and electric bill - and head priest (i can't spell monsiguiur or whatever his title is) basically had to be beaten with a stick to be convinced that he was obligated to help out the other parish.

it's that kind of hypocrisy that I really can't stomach - and I won't priest -bash because it's not the robes that did this -it was the man in the robes - he makes a nice salary (no vow of poverty for him) lives in a nice house he doesn't pay for - takes nice vacations but didn't think it was a good idea to help out a paris that was in need -when a portion of his own parishioners said to do it... and the rest of the parishioners basically said no we're good people but we don't need to help out that parish - and do good - instead let's pat ourselves on the back and give christmas presents to a handful of underpriveledged kids...
