what a dumb idea

think about it - if you stuff two plates of pasta in every meal - or the equivalent and then you cut down - eat only half or nothing at all, your stomach has to get smaller. In my early twenties I was on a weight-loss-trip and in then end I couldn't even eat one apple at once - I am sure it had to do with the amount my stomach was able to handle at any one time. I think it was very small at that time. And why do you think it is that when you had a huge meal in the evening you wake up hungry - happens to me. Please correct me if I am wrong, I have no medicinal background on this topic, just my experience.

Did you ever think that the reason you couldn't stomach an apple after fasting was because your body stopped producing the stomach acids necessary to digest your food?

Thank you Natalie,

I also always experienced that when I ate breakfast that I was hungry before lunchtime and when I skipped it, I could go until the evening without food. I believe that I expanded my stomach and it wanted more.
I have since learned that breakfast is very important, so are the snacks in between and I went from eating once or twice per day to eating five to six times, that doesn't include the cookies and chocolates that I eat in between:(.

The real reason you could go all day without eating after skipping breakfast is because your metabolism slowed down from not eating.

it is just a myth that the stomach shrinks. I am quite surprised to find this board here on fasting and how popular it seems!

While it isnt a given fact you'll put the weight back on you'll lose by fasting I can't see any reason to do it more than say a few times a year if for personal reasons.

I have naturally fasted but only because i've really had no appetite for whatever reason, and then only for a day.

I guess I remain to be convinced on it's plus points. For me, as a delberate practice, it has no place in my weight loss journey.

I'll go ahead and defend the fasting method, as it's working for me at the moment. I've been on it for about 7 weeks and have lost over 30 pounds. (29 lbs as of last Tuesday) The diet part is strict but extremely easy. Regular exercise is required, and it's taken me some time to make a habit of getting up in the morning and doing my treadmill routine. I've certainly learned a lot more about how my body really works since going down to bare minimum.

The mistake most people make is that they don't do a supervised program. Trying to do it yourself will only end up making you starve and is pretty dangerous. Also, you eat very few calories so it's important that you space it correctly throughout the day to keep metabolism up, drink lots of water, and take necessary supplements. Not sure about the stomach shrinking thing, it at least "feels" smaller when you get used to eating tiny meals.

I think the supervised fasting method is something that heavier people should research a bit more. It's not for everyone, but for those ready to make the commitment it offers freedom from "choice" so you don't continue to make bad ones. In that regard, it lends precious time to rev up the body's metabolism, get over physical addictions to flour/sugar/wheat, and perspective on how to eat when you complete the program. Google "Protein-Sparing Modified Fasts" and see what you come up with.

The obesity epidemic is so rampant and the consequences so dire that we can't afford to write off methods of losing weight simply because they're unconventional.

Okay, guys. Fasting is not stupid if you are doing it for the right reasons. Also, there are different types of fasting. If you fast, you will lose weight, yes. And yes, the weight WILL come back quickly if you don't ease off the fast the proper way. But the goal of fasting should not be to lose weight. Fasting should be intended for detoxification of the body or for spiritual reasons.

I like juice fasting. I got a juicer for Christmas, and I love to make fresh fruit juices. But I don't do it to lose weight; I do it to cleanse my body. Our bodies weren't designed to handle all the toxins that are now in the world. Fasting, even for just a few days, gives the body a break and allows it to rest. If you fast for 2 weeks or more, then you may find your breath smells really bad or that your skin breaks out. That is just your body releasing toxins, nothing more. Fasting is not unhealthy at all, when done correctly. If you want to fast, just make sure you do your research first. And make sure it is for the right reasons.
