Hi, for several weeks, maybe a month and a half now, I've been going to the gym for a good 2 hours a day, about 5 days a week. I have also read about the paul mckenna weight loss programme and I am trying to apply those rules to my lifestyle. For those who do not know, they are

1/ When you're hungry, eat
2/ Eat what you want
3/ Eat consciously

and

4/ stop when full

I have been applying them quite well and in the first 2 weeks noticed quite big differences in the size of my stomach. However sometimes i find i have really bad days when i return to my old eating habits of just eating for no reason and not being able to stop myself. On good days it means that i actually don't eat much at all, often skipping a meal because im not even hungry for it. It is not this that i have the problem with, but how to stop myself on the bad days, and how these bad days have an effect on my overall weight loss. Presently, I feel like my stomach has actually got bigger not smaller and I'd really like some help in what i'm doing wrong! and how i can improve what i am doing. I'd say in a period of 2 weeks i'd have 3 bad days, 4 average and the rest good.

please help!

Thanks :)

Go and Get your Armor...

Hi gymgoer, I think all of us here fitness enthusiast experience the Bad day in our "fitness" cycle(mine was even monstrous). But one of the most powerful counter technique I learned is the phrase: "Will eating this lead me closer to my goal?" That single phrase alone was my secret weapon every time that hotdog, the cakes, the porkchop, burgers, and other delicious confections at home or at an event looks so irresistable. After all the battle for fitness is within ourselves so go and get your amour...beat Evil Craving!

Gymgoer,

You said "On good days it means that i actually don't eat much at all, often skipping a meal because im not even hungry for it." I understand what you're saying, but the best way to keep your metabolism going is to eat 5 small meals daily. By small meals, it means eating enough to curb hunger. This keeps your metabolism going.

It sounds to me like your metabolism is slowing down if your not hungry......

I have heard of this type of weight loss system but if I followed it I would be 200 pounds in no time at all. Same with those eat all the carbs you want but watch the fat. If I don't count calories the sky is the limit to what I eat.

Sounds like you may have a problem with emotional eating to address and you may need more focus. Maybe a food diary would help.

hi gymgoer. sounds great, but yes, i'd watch that type of program. as was said, skipping meals actually slows your metabolism. the best way to keep metabolism up and burn calories is by eating like 5 times a day-not 5 Meals a day, but like a healthy breakfast (key), healthy snack, healthy lunch, healthy snack, healthy dinner, and if not too late, healthy snack ;) this keeps your metabolism (calorie/fat burning) up. Try not to eat the few hours before you go to bed, because it just "sits" and adds fat stores. The key is to Moderate when you eat unhealthy things or in general. Use a smaller plate, write everything you eat and drink down-you'd be amazed, it shows patterns, and it doesn't take long. On your bad days, try to think of something else you enjoy but is healthier or a healthier version of what you want. You do want to keep you goal of looking and feeling better at the forefront. Question yourself, and are you eating because of an emotional need? Most of us are guilty of that, not because we're hungry, but bored, depressed, stressed, etc. Watch "cravings" and where it stems from.

Some healthy foods that also help burn fat are:

Grapefruit ("super fruit") reduces fat storage, rich in fiber, and body burns extra calories to break it down

Green Tea provides healthy EGCG (speeds up brain and nervous system to burn more calories)

Natural Yogurt has high protein which requires a lot of energy to be processed.

Almonds' essential fatty acids help raise your body’s metabolism, but they're very high in calories, so don't overdo it

Turkey is very protein-rich and builds lean muscle tissue, which makes your body burn extra calories and raises your metabolism.

Apples are also low calorie and high in fiber, so your body must burn calories to break it down. They also help you stay full longer, so you’ll eat less.

Spinach speeds up metabolism, and is a great source of antioxidants, magnesium, potassium, iron and vitamin C.

Beans are low in fat and loaded with protein, they keep you full longer, and your body has to burn extra calories to process them.

Jalapenos have capcaisin, which helps your body burn more calories for hours, speeding up both your heart rate (be aware of this) and metabolism.

Broccoli contains a very effective group of metabolism-boosting nutrients, calcium and vitamin C. Calcium is a metabolic trigger, and vitamin C helps your body absorb more calcium.

Oatmeal has fat-soluble fiber which takes a long time for your body to break down. It lowers your body’s insulin level and speeds up your metabolism.

Soy Milk and soy milk cereal. Fortified soy milk is loaded with calcium, which helps boost metabolism. Just stay away from the sweetened varieties.

Like jalapenos, Curry increases the calories your body burns and speeds up your metabolism.

Cinnamon and

Coffee (no more than 2-3 regular cups/day)

Aloe & Weightlosstips1 are right. You need to eat about every 2.5 to 3 hours. You do need fat to lose fat. Dont ever let any one tell you differently. Just make sure you are eating the right kind of fat. Always stay away from saturated fats and hydrogenated oils.
Stay away from processed foods and eat foods that are homemade such as,
Steak, Chicken, Lean pork like chops, hamburgers made with no less than 85% lean meats.
Also any fruit, vegetable nut legume bean as long as they are fresh/frozen fresh and homemade.
You need to get into preparing your own foods and stay away from sugary foods. You will get plenty of sugar from the fruits you eat.
This is why they never had an obesity problem years ago because they ate butter, milk, eggs meat fresh vegetables and fruits, yogurt sour cream etc... even the breads were made fresh without sugar.
All the food you eat today in a package is putting harmful chemicals and preservatives into your body and clogging up your liver so it cant do its job processing fat.
Also the last person said soy products. Be careful with them. They will put weight on because they are processed with harmful chemicals.
Hope this helps.
PS you don't need to count calories. Only need to eat 6 times a day and eat meals that fit you and are healthy

Don't follow the 'don't count calories' myth. You do need to..in the start.

Weight loss is Calories in vs Calories out. You can follow the advice of eating 6 times a day fit and healthy and STILL eat too many calories to lose weight.

Listening to your body is only good if you speak it's language. If this was common, I don't think obesity would be through the roof.

Going about things with hands off approach (where you're not counting, weighing, etc.) is fine and dandy. ASSUMING it's working for you. If it's not, getting your hands dirty with the math, at least until you can identify your problems, is probably the way to go.

If you want advice

Hallo, My name is Milka, I am a fittnes instructor. I can give you my simpliest advice for free and it's not complicated and for strat you dont need to excercise. Just folow this simple advice and it should become your lifestyle. You will feel better. First forget all expansive products that promise overnight losing weight. Non of it is healthy, and more importent is staying healthy.
1.Breakfast - Have it soon as you get up.(it shoud be not after 9, supposing you are working)
2.Lunch - 4-5 hours after breakfast (it should be healthy, both proteins and carbon hidrates-NOT FAST FOOD)
3.You should eat some fruits(because of vitamins and minerals your body needs) It is like a sneck between lunch and diner.
4.Diner- not after 18 o'clock.(it should be mostly proteins if not just proteines(fish is great, or find some other source of proteins)
5. Do not eat enything until morning.
Drink more water than usual.
Just be persistant! You will feal better soon.
If you want better results you can drink some herbal tea + that extra water. There are some good products on the market. [product name and pitch removed].

Wish you good luck!!!

I'd be willing to bet you make money off the tea you're pitching. That's why you're asking for PMs.

Not cool.

And my reply to that very same crap...

It has been proven that time is not a factor to weight loss. It doesn't matter when you eat, it's how much you eat.

But I give you credit. You skirted the rules by not actually linking that crap to drink. Let's look at one thing, first you say to take your time with losing weight (don't expect overnight) and Hey you can make if faster by drinking this crap.

Slick. Don't listen to this people. Use your head.

There are no noted active ingredients highlighted on the official Slim Tea website.

There doesn’t appear to be any significant company background information provided on the official website.

Some ingredients found in Slim Tea may not be suitable for some individuals.

A full product ingredient list for Slim Tea is not offered on the official website.

The official My Slim Tea website comes across as a massive ad or infomercial and offers very little clinical product information.

What a great phrase!!

I laugh at people who say "just listen to your body - eat when you're hungry". Honey, if I KNEW what my body was saying, then I wouldn't have been 250 lbs at 5'4".

Many of us - I'd venture to say most Americans who are overweight - have had our hunger triggers skewed by a lifetime of advertising, well meaning friends and relatives, and societal pressures. Serving sizes are insane at restaurants. Friends encourage us to go out and eat junk. Fast food is everywhere - and good god have you seen the ads for losing weight by eating Taco Bell? Many of us grew up being taught that it was rude or unhealthy not to "clean your plate" when we ate. Parents gave rewards for good behavior that were candy or ice cream or cake. No sporting event is complete without a tailgate party with burgers and dogs and potato salad and beer. We were told if you feel bad, have a cookie and you'll feel better. If you get good news - let's go out to eat to celebrate.

The list could go on forever.

Most of us had no chance of understanding the difference between true hunger and satiety and just plain flat out emotional eating.

Until I started counting calories and measuring/weighing servings, I had NO IDEA what was a healthy amount of food to eat. And believe me, you can get fat eating healthy food, too.

Mindful eating is a great thing - and more people should be encouraged to explore it an understand how their bodies deal with hunger and satiety. But saying it's "all you need" is flat out stupid - and harmful to people who just aren't at that stage in their healthy lifestyle.

Count calories. Measure and weigh your food. Learn what a serving is. Learn how much it takes for you to feel full and satisfied. THEN you can begin to channel that into mindful eating. When, as Steve so brilliantly put it, your body speaks the language.

Hi, i had similar problem when trying to lose weight. Before you start eating the junk food, drink 1/2 l of water.

During your bad days try to think of "what are your goals" then that will help you stop from overeating. It works for me perfectly. I have my bad days too where I would just eat everything then I realized that when I overeat I will not be able to achieve my goal. At first it was hard but slowly I have overcome the temptation of eating just about anything.

Gymgoer

hello Gymgoer,

Maybe you could drink daily much more water and when you are going a little bit off track ...being kind to yourself is the best way to get started!
Nurturing your thoughts during a diet-plan is far more important then the diet in itself...without a self caring and positive mind you will achieve less progress.
On another note I've tried this calorie-shifting diet that works very fast and with no hard physical exercises. I lost 5kg in the 1st week and then a few kilos more in the last days. You have to eat 6 times a day and you alternate fruits , vegetables and meat each meal. You can choose which order and which foods you want to combine from a food list in different groups. The portions are half of your usual meal when you eat 3 times a day. This diet tricks the body in burning fat fast and efficiently.

Good luck in your endeavors!

10.4 pounds in one week. Does that sound healthy or right to you? Think about the claim and the rest falls apart.

Check the stickies, they have alot of better information than diet scams. You are smarter than that. We want to help you the right way.

I swear 99% of the people who ask 'have you heard of this plan' is trying to sell said plan...

Yes they are but you know some people may have good eating plans out there that can help alot of people. I have reviewed quite a few myself and found some. But I disagree with you on "calorie counting" Most people do not eat enough food to lose fat. Yes they get thinner and lose fat but also muscle. The typical 165 lb male should eat about 2500 calories and would remian thin if he did 3 things.
1. vary foods daily and times daily
2. detox the body especially the liver
3. build some muscle density
This would kick the metabolism into overdrive. See we are so used to eating the same amount and the same kinds of foods that our body do not metabolize them as well. Eat 5 to 6 times a day and different foods and different times and do short high interval training and you will never have a weight problem again.
The chemicals we eat dont help either. They gum up our liver and it does not metabolize the fats as well.
Never did you here of people counting calories years ago (I am 42) they just ate different foods and lots of it.

False, false, false, false, and false.

About the only thing that's useful in that is the bit about building muscle density.

Really? Maybe you didn't. I'm also 42 and I vividly remember both my mother and my grandmother counting calories. They both had books of calorie counts that they carried in their purses to monitor what they ate. Perhaps you were just never around the people who were doing it.
