well just looking at the bottle now of the fish oil capsules.
It is only 180mg EPA and 120mg DHA so i guess i have the lowest brand !
Should i just take more of these tablets or switch to a stronger one ?

Secondly looking at some articles about high TGs it says avoid sugar and GRAINS. ! well hang on - i thought me eating all these extra whole grain sandwiches was doing me some good !
Have i got it completely wrong ?

No, you don't have the lowest brand. Lots of them are like that. Finish what you've got. I'm sure it's good enough quality (I'm assuming it's made from anchovies, sardines, etc.).

The next time you go to replenish your stash, take a look at the EPAs and DHAs and make your decision based on that -- and try to get pharmaceutical grade supplements. They cost a little more, but I think they're worth it.

I don't eat a lot of bread, mostly because I count carbs and bread has a lot of carbs in it. There is nothing wrong with fiber, so eating a high fiber bread is OK unless you're on an anabolic diet. Sugar isn't the greatest thing on the planet, but it's pretty tough to get away from it. I think what they're saying is don't consume mass quantities of high GI foods. It's really not that healthy.

I never answered your question with respect to how much you can take per day. I know some people who can tolerate 4000mg, but they probably aren't totalling the actual values.

Your digestive tract will let you know whether you've taken too much ;)

Some of the articles promote low carbohydrate diets, so any bread is bad in those diets.

However, if you are not doing a low carbohydrate diet, you still want to make sure that you choose good carbs (vegetables, whole fruits, beans, whole grains) over bad or marginal carbs (sugar, sweet drinks, refined grains). Those sodas and juices that you say that you have been drinking definitely are not good. But make sure that your bread really is whole grain, not refined grain with a small amount of whole grain as is commonly sold.

In terms of fish oil, why not just eat more fish?

I_Love_muscle..... have you got that figure correct - tolerating 4000mgs ?
I take 4 *1000mg tabs which is 4000mgs and the packet says to take 6000mgs, and other people have told me i can have a lot more. Wouldnt 4000mgs be the minimum?

Also, when you say digestive tract will let you know - what symptoms would i get if i haev had too much fish oil ?

Cheers

It depends on the person. If you lack the enzymes to properly digest the fish oils, either your liver or kidneys end up taking the brunt of it, so you can get oily urine that smells like fish and/or light colored, floating turds ;) We want our turds to be heavy enough to sink to the bottom. Nobody wants floating turds :D

If your system can tolerate 6000mg, take it. But start slowly. Don't just start taking 6000mg. Ease into it. Add another capsule every week until you're at 6.

Sorry for being so graphic, but we all turn around and look at our accomplishments in the toilet :) So keep checking to make sure everything is A-OK. If you want to keep taking the fish oil and things aren't looking quite right, just eat mango, papaya or pineapple within 30 minutes of taking the fish oil capsules to help break it down.

most fish oil pills will only give you about 30% DHA/EPA. (300mg of 1000) Just look around see what you can find.

I think you've hit on your problem. Stay away from the juices and colas. Eat REAL food. Solid food. I'd rather see you eat a whole wheat bagel than drink a coke. Tons more nutrients and fiber to boost.

As far as Omega 3's, read the label. You want at least a gram of the actual omega 3's per day for "cardioprotective" benefits. I think the ones I take have 720 mgs of omega 3's per 2 tablets. I take 4 per day for a total of 1.44 grams omega 3's per day. You will get more benefits the more you take up to a maximum of about 4 grams per day if your body can tolerate it. Side effects I experienced were gas and diarrhea. Check out this link for correct dosage etc.

Keep asking the questions. You are on the right track!

Salmon oil is king when taking a fish oil supplement. Mackerel is bad because the fish can live for a long time and accumulate ambient toxins. Salmon all die after 5 years. Anchoives and sardines are a close second.

Be suire to read the labels on your fish oil supp before you choose one. Take it right before your first bite of a meal to avoid fishy burps. Spicy foods will still give you fish burps no matter what so don't get discouraged by it and keep taking them.

edit - be sure if you go with salmon oil the fish comes from teh wild. farm raised fish are basically raised in a sewer.

The fish oil brand i take is Natures Own Omega3 Fish Oil 1000mg
(EPA) - 180mg
(DHA) - 120mg

It doesnt say on the label exactly which type of fish oil it is, but it does say 'complys with heavy metals levels including mercury'. so i guess it is ok.

From what i am gathering from all your answers - the upshot is :-
to keep TG levels lower, cut out the refined carbs/sugars and keep the wholegrain foods.

I am actually switching to porridge in the mornings now which i know is a good source of healthy wholegrain food.

Thanks

Mackabee
