treadmill running is boring

Im thinking of just finding a good place to run outside like the woods and running for a long oeriod of time instead of doing HITT on treadmill or join some sport or somthing or skip. Whats the best choice from these ?

Treadmill is the best bet for my money. Outside running is not paced and takes its toll on your body, be careful!!!! Get a TV and enjoy the treadmill!

Join a sport. While it puts you in a social setting and lets you be active. I would try to join something that puts having fun over die hard competition though. Dont join the dart league and expect great results though!

I would say that it depends on your normal life... Are you the kind of person that deals with people all day and tons of stress and you just want to get away and relax? Then I would say go for the outdoor running on a nice grassy path through the woods.

If you are the kind of person who works from home, doesn't talk to many people other than your spouse / computer, then definetly try to join a community team sport or activity where you can have fun, get exercise and meet new people all at the same time.

Or do a combination of both if your time allows it.

Stay on the treadmill and get an iPod. Running on the street can be inconsistant.

I agree.

You could put the treadmill in front of your big screen if you got one and play something where theres woods. Hmmm Tears of the Sun, mute it, then wear some headphones for a cdplayer/Ipod and have a cd made for forest sounds. So your in the middle of a battle which should get your adrenaline going, but instead of hearing gunshots n' screaming and what not, you hear birds chirping, and butterflys soaring, and water trinkles. That oughta liven up your treadmill experience. Hell go the whole 9 yards and put a nice floral display around your treadmill, grab some leaves and scatter them around you. And wah-lah you got the outdoors, indoors. It's glorious.

Lmao Brahma, good stuff. I found that when I run, inconsistently, on the treadmill that I get extremely bored after like 5 minutes. When I run outside it feels better I guess, the fresh air and the scenery. Also, the treadmill run makes me feel as though I'm putting myself through misery rather than rewarding my body and seems to take much longer. All around I feel like out door running is better for my mind and my mentality when I try to run.

Just choose whatever you like better. If you're living in the city run on the treadmill, if you're living next to some woods etc. conquer them! For the latter you could also use a treadmill for when the weather sucks as much as it does right now outside my house, in addition. I'd like one right now... I think it's ****ed up how expensive they are- I'd need to sell my car in order to be able to afford one.

Personally for me it's all about the music. I used to really find the treadmill boring until I got my ipod. I do my HIIT training twice a week on the treadmill and ensure I have really loud music playing.

When I doing a longer run say 45 minutes I do the following, I put together a play list which is 45 minutes long or as long as the run I have planned, then I put a towel over the display. It really is a physiological thing for me. But by doing these things I know I can't stop until the music finishes and by keeping the display covered it stops me from wanting to look at how far I've run. Sounds strange but works for me:eek:

I would chose this over the tredmill any day. I have a tredmill and have just gotten totally tiredd of being on it. Not to mention that it breaks all the time. So, I have taken up running on the city greenbelt (a 10 or so mile paved path that everyone can use) and it's much more interesting and it usually goes by faster because there's more to look at.

I definately like running outside better, so much more freedom, and i dont feel comfortable really ramping up the speed on a treadmill.

Plus when you are outside you get to see actual people! Believe it or not that alone is an incentive to keep you going, vs slowing down and walking.

Plus the fresh air and sunlight can't do you any harm :) Work on your tan too.

Running on a treadmill doesn't even compare to running outside. I used to run for a middle distance club and ever since I stopped that and have just been going to the gym, I've only used the treadmills about twice before I realised how much better running outside where you are actually moving forward and not staying in the one position is.

It's so much easier to motivate urself to say right..run to the top of this hill...than right..keep running flat out on this machine for a couple more mins.
When you can actually SEE the goal, it makes things alot easier and you are more likely to achieve them.

Just my 0.2 Cents:)

I also found that running on a treadmill is actually nothing like running on the ground, but I found a secret to this. In order to make your treadmill experience somewhat similar to running on a road, move the incline percent up so that it feels just right. Sure it will be a little harder to go as fast, but it is easier on your feet, and you can actually get your foot hitting correctly making your run easier and more beneficial.

Try Cardio Coach guided workouts. You can use it on all cardio machines like the treadmill, elliptical machine, spinning bike etc. You can use it while walking or running outdoors! Before, I would usually just listen to my fave music on my ipod and it works. However, there are times I also get bored. A lot of people suggested Cardio Coach so I tried one and it's fun and time flies! Very motivating! You can try a demo download or listen to the samples at the website.
