Theoretical question

You have a co-worker. Each of you works 8 hours to perform a job/task. They are different task but each of you is capable of doing the others task. For your work, you are paid.

You figure-out & invent a way to get your work done in only 2 hours...so you only need to work 2 hours go accomplish the same productivity.

1) Should you do 2 hours of your original task and then be expected to spend another 6 helping your co-worker do theirs?

2) Assuming you go home after your 2 hours, does your boss have the right to now pay you only 1/4 the amount previously paid because you are now only working 2 hours instead of 8?

I guess it depends on your boss really, and what industry you're in. In general though if I were the "boss" I would give the faster worker more tasks to fill up the 8 hours and a raise for being more efficient than the other guy :p

in a perfect world. In the real world you would be expected to help your slower co worker do their job as well.

My answer do you work in 2 hours and keep your mouth shut that you can do it that fast. Otherwise you will just be taken advantage of by the man.

I'd say it's capitalism, since yor employer wants to get the most money out of you.

And yeah, don't let anyone know you're very efficient at something.

Theres a time and place to let them know just how efficient you are. I keep it in my back pocket for when it would really count to impress the ones responsible for giving me a raise. its all a game that one must play well.

This question is why the concept of "salary" was invented...pay for a "job" rather than hours worked. Usually the more talented employee will have more responsibility and therefore, more pay via a salary.

A good boss would cross-train the slower employee to work at the productivity level of the faster employee, give the faster employee a raise and title ("trainer" or something).

Salary has its pros and cons. I have to work a boat load of OT (unpaid) sometimes but other times I can skate early. Its all about getting the job done on time and on budget.

Its when they need a favor is when you pull out the trump card.

Here's what would happen in real life:

Bob gets hired to a job of 40 hours per week.
Day 1, Bob gets assigned some easy tasks. Basically, sitting there doing nothing but learning the procedure.
Day 2, Bob gets his first task. It's easy, but it takes him a while longer than someone else since he's new to the job.
Day 3, Bob gets comfortable with his position now that he knows the work.
Day 4, Bob gets another, more difficult task. Normally it takes someone two full days, but not Bob. Bob gets it done in 2 hours but sit around and do nothing else for the rest of the day.
Day 5, Bob gets another task. It's Friday, and Bob expects a lot of work before hitting the weekend. Bob gets another difficult task in which he finishes in 2 hours.
Day 6, After the weekend Bob comes back to work. Nothing to do for the either 8 hours.
Day 7, Bob gets another task and he's happy to get work. The manager tells him that it's hard work but he gets it down in an hour while he spends the rest of the day doing nothing.
Day 8, Bob is learning that he needs to expand his task to fulfil the entire day. So in the next task, instead of finishing the entire thing in two hours, he spends the rest of the day doing bits and pieces.
Day 9, Bob's manager is not happy with the current performance and let's him go.
Day 10, Bob went crazy since he has a wife and kid at home. So he decides to go to Jim's Weapon and Ammo and settle the despute the American way.
Day 11, Bob is now awaiting for a court date for first degree murder.

He wouldn't be let go if the boss expected him to use the entire day on the task he in reality used 2 hours on. So there's no problem. Of course you shouldn't do less than what is required to keep the job :p

I work in a lawfirm. If a job normally takes 8 hours, that's what we charge, whether it took us 2 hours or 12 hours. I'm in securities, so if a client wants to list on the TSE or the NYSE, we already know how much they have to pay, regardless of how long it takes us to do it. Give or take a few thousand ... ;)

If we can do an 8 hour job in 2 hours, that means our billable hours go up. And we make more money.

Don't know what it's like in a non-partnership arena ...

So I am guessing your real life name is Bob?

I just realized that I get paid to do nothing during the summer. And now that I'm having to work, I need a raise since I'm getting paid the same to actually get off the couch and stop watching Lifetime.

the joys of being a teacher. You won't be bragging come late November when you are dealing with 30 or so screaming, whining kids.

Working for other people is dumb, most of the time.

When I work extra hard, I get paid extra hard. And it ain't a linear progression. :D

I'm not catching your drift. Why November and why 30? I wish it were 30, I have about a total of 300 through the course of a week.
