The richest person on the forum.

Gharris is right, you ahve to do something that makes you happy or allow you to gain happiness, I ahve a decent job, but not a dream job of mine, but it allows me to be a good father to my children and enjoy time with my wife. I have plenty of money for the future because I saved and invested wisely.

But the real joys of life are coching my kids teams, Soccer, basketball and T-ball, watching them grow and have fun with their friends. We do two vacations every year, which I find very valuable to travel and see family.

being wealthy is not about money, it's about being happy. People that need to be rich are never satisfied with life, they can not comprehend that life ends someday and you can not take your riches with you, that simply life passes you by they you stand there wondering what the hell just happened?

I also have crazy ($$$) life insurance through my work in case something should happen to me, or my wife....the kids will be set financially to get through college and a nice egg to start life as an adult.

Money is great, but remeber it's just a tool to get you to the place that makes you happy.

Well put! That's the exact same kind of mindset my parents had when they were raising me and my 2 brothers, and the same mindset that has been instilled in me.

2 vacations per year + having fun with your kids + being happy = priceless.
There are some things money can't buy, for everything else, there's Mastercard.

GAman - What do you suggest to someone who has a small savings but who doesn't know anything about investing? I just feel like it's ridiculous to have so much money in the savings account earning (practically) no interest.

Calcium - I know this was a directed question, but your post caught my eye. Think of investing like personal training, or coaching for a sport. Find a professional that has a good reputation and get help. (You don't want to play trial and error with your own money trying to learn)

A few years ago my wife and I started using a financial advisor. (he was actually one of my clients) His firm is ranked in the top 2% in the country. He took over the distribution of our 401k, investments, life insurance. We went from making single digit interest per year to averaging the mid teens the first year, and ever since.

Since we started using him the retirement plan has moved up 10 years. This was one of the smartest moves we have ever made. My wife and I can focus on other things, knowing our money is in good hands.

Do some homework, some financial advisors will not work with you unless there is over 1/4 mil to work with. Others will work with anyone.

I did not mean to butt in, but I hope this helps.

I make, one miiiiillion dollars, Bwhahahahaha!!!

Cal,

Goergen is right, While I have done ok myself, I took several economic classes in HS and college, Luckily for me in HS, I had a great teacher that taught us about the stock market and investing, it sunk into me and I used his advice.

Since you are new I agree with Goergen, find a solid Financial peron to help you, there are plenty out there, but make a wise choice, talk to some well off friends see who they use.

Worst case scerio, is you get a mutual fund through Sharebuilder or another site, and depending on your age and your goals, you will pick a fund witht he info they have.

But since you are "fresh" I would talk to a professionall.

Maybe Goergen's investor can recommend someone in your area, it's worth a shot.

Also the line, " for evrything else there is mastercard"...they forget to tell you about the interst ;) I pay cash as MUCH AS POSSIBLE!!
