"Teachers will carry guns in school." Thoughts?

And bears

Bears are pretty scary

... imagine if the US constitution included the right to arm bears...

The only problem I have with it is one of the kids getting a hold of that gun. I think it would be a better solution to keep an armed police officer in the school at all times.

An even better solustion would be for parents to actually be parents and know what their kids are doing. If my sons ever had a gun for any reason other than going hunting or shooting with ME. We would have a very serious problem.

I'm on the fence here. A teacher could have a bad day and be mentally unstable as well and could start shooting. We read about work place shootings more than we do school shootings. At the same time we do have a lot of gangster wanna be kids who pull guns at the drop of a hat.

Bears might be Ameica's number one threat. But must they all be put on notice? What if we could build a T-800 bear model? It could be reality.

One would think it's logical to carry guns in case someone goes crazy and starts shooting and then someone will be able to stop them.

But let's think about it for a second.

First off, shooters are typically your every day man. Basically, what it means is that you won't be able to tell if a person is aggressive or not based on his appearance. In the most recent attack by Cho, I believe he wore a vest, which might tell him apart, but wearing a vest if pretty common.

Second off, let's suppose three people got out their guns in hopes to stop shooters. Let's suppose each of the three don't know each other. Now, how will one tell apart from the other? Let's say one starts shooting the actual shooter, then another sees him, and thinks he's the shooter and starts shooting at him? Innocent person got injured for no reason.

Third, factor in fear. The sound of gun fire or any loud sound is known to cause people to shake. It's a natural reaction since it's an indication of a problem... in nature it could mean something is going to attack you, an earthquake, things falling around you, etc. With that in mind, you'd be shaking like a broken motel bed add that in with the above two and you'd get crazy people shooting at things wildly.

In my opinion, I think schools should educate people at a young age on how to cope with various life problems. You can't tell people to be nice to everyone, but you can tech them how to cope with problems in a safe way.

I am against any idea to arm citizens in hopes to prevent further problems. I think the average man is too dumb to use it effectively outside of his home. Shooting targets at a range is easy, but try shooting a target in a crowded area while the target is moving around things you don't want to hit.

In Texas during the 70s, the reason they invented SWAT teams was out of this dude who decided to buy all these guns and take control of a rooftop of a university where he killed like 10 people or so. The reaction of the public was to bring out their own rifles and fire back. Needless to say, the confusion caused the police to react to the local people shooting back, and on top of that, finding a way to break down the door to the rooftop where the man has like 1000s of rounds and 4, or 5 different weapons. The end result is the invention of the SWAT team, but the more important thing is that weapons used by civilians to counter defend is a bad idea and not ideal as more people got killed and injured as a result of the gun fight.

They do at VA schools. As a matter of fact, officers have a "panic" button they press that will cause every unit in the area to respond and come to the school. Pretty safe if you ask me.

You can be quite surprised by how often children will bring weapons to school. I wonder if the teacher will shoot them? Most of the time they bring it only to "show and tell" and then they get caught and that's the end of it.

good point Dallen. Education is the key here. when I was in school we took hunters safety in 6th grade. Its was mandated by the school district. I think if we did more to educate kids on the proper use of guns and proper safety less of this crap would be going on.

Too bad by the time they get there a number of people will already have been killed.

You have very mixed up views sometimes. I thought you liked the Chinese culture and way of living? Not only is gun ownership banned there; you could be executed for owning one and even telling someone you wanted one would result in you being thrown in jail.

Just because I like Chinese culture and history doesn't mean I support every policy their government dishes out.

I still support the right to bear arms. Guns in every house hold. Concealed weapons by responsible teachers at schools, etc. Just one of my many conservative values.

I'd be afraid to leave the house!!

If you think about it, with strategic shaving and a cap I’m sure Yogi could have passed himself off as an overweight red neck and quite easily obtained a gun legally.

I’m too scared to visit the US now

Hopefully this is a temporary solution that will be held in place only until the real problems are solved (the kids and parents).

Hmmmm...I think I'm starting to warm up to carrying a gun.

"Johnny! I said to do 25 push ups. You only did 20. You better rep out another 5 or you're going to end up like Timmy with a cap in his..."

I guess I should comment.

I think it's sad that our world has become so dangerous that people fee we need to carry weapons around. I certainly don't feel safe in what is supposed to be a nice suburban area. I'm afraid of getting mugged when I go out.

On the opposite end of the spectrum I think some of the school policies regarding weapons are ridiculous. I've heard of kids getting suspended for bringing plastic knives (used for eating) to school.

Once it comes in I doubt there's any chance it'll go again

Is there no way of scanning kids as they enter?
I'm sure teachers would rather armed security guards at the doors than having to carry guns themselves.

I think when it is implemented some teachers will carry and most will not. While I believe very strongly in the second amendment because I'm a hunter I feel it is wrong to arm society. There are too many people out there who willl not act responsibly with a weapon in the possession at all times.

Guns are a tool used for a food gathering activity and thats it. Aside from law enforcement of course. Keeping a gun loaded at any other time then being afield and ready to shoot it is also very foolish.
