Teach me something new (and interesting ;-) -for rep)

Hey guys, I saw jman's thread about learning something new about lifting and saw what a great idea it was, so I wanted to make one and make it more open, but NOT to include anything about weightlifting, because that is all for jmans thread. Basically I want to learn something new, but general, it can be about anything, just to help me, and others with basic general knowledge, and I also really want to find a new area of interest for me. So areas like phylosophy, music, sport. General areas. If I didn't already know it, or find it interesting I'll rep you once or more for it. You can either post an article or go into your own detail/stories about it.

Thanks for your contributions :)

Throughout my life I have overcome things with heart, and goes something like this:

I may be small and you may be bigger, but with my heart, you gonna feal as if your beaten, though you may think you have won, you wont be back.

Did you know that our DNA holds the "codes" for every protein we can make? DNA. So DNA decides what proteins we can make. If there's a fault in our DNA somewhere it can cause the body not to be able to make a specific protein, which can have huge consequences.
Remember, proteins aren't just what are used to make muscle. Enzyms, which katalyze (make something go faster) reactions in our body are proteins. If one of these enzyms can't be made.. well, you get the point ;)

My cat's father is her brother from 2 litters before her, and the father of those litters (one of which produced her father/brother) was also a brother from a litter before that.

She is something like 3rd or 4th generation inbred, and, full grown, weighs 6 lbs and stands roughly 7-8 inches tall.

So, if country yard cats are allowed to inbreed enough times, they can produce little bitty cats.

Nothing to do with fitness, though. Except, well maybe inbreeding may stunt your muscle development.

In reading "Awaken the Giant Within" there was an example of a man who did not go to sleep until he learned something new each day. It started as a kid at the dinner table his father would ask him "what did you learn today?" He said he had to give genuine answers and it carried on to his adult life. I have decided to do this daily and maybe become the smartest man alive. lol

Nice thread Woodt. I opened it thinking, didnt jman already do this.

Here are a few fun facts I learned when reading the book Fast Food Nation:

Shortened
Vegetarian Legal Action network recently petitioned the FDA to issue new food labeling requirements for foods that contain natural flavors. Vegetarians often have no way of knowing whether a flavor additive contains beef, pork, etc One of the most widely used color additives violates a number of religious dietary restrictions, may cause allergic reactions, and comes from an unusual source. Cochineal extract is made from the desicated bodies of female Dactlyopius coccus Costa, a small insected mainly in Peru and the Canary islands. The bugs feed on red cactus berries, and are collected, dried, and ground into pigment. 70K bugs are used for 1lb of ce and it used to make foods look pink, red, or purple. Dannon strawberry yogurt gets it color from CE, along with many frozen fruit bars, candies, fruit fillings, and Ocean Spray pink-grapefruit juice.

Ya I typed that from the book.

Consumers prefer to see natural flavors on a label, out of belief that they are healthier. The distinction between natural and artificial is based more on how the flavor is made, then what it actually contains.

N and A flavors sometimes contain the exact same chemicals, produced differently. Amyl acetate is the dominant note of banana flavor. When you distill it from bananas with a solvent, it is natural. When vinegar is mixed with amyl alchohol, adding sulfuric acid as a catalyst, it is an artificial flavor. Either way it smells and tastes the same.

A natural flavor is not healthier or purer than an A one in some cases. When almond flavor (benzaldehyde) is derived from natural sources, peach or apricot pits, it contains traces of hydrogen cyanide (poison). But when derived by mixin oil of clove and the banana flavor above, it contains no cyanide.

A and N flavors are now manufactured at the same plants.

If anyone thought proteins were only muscle related needs a good kick up the bum :). You could also add lipophobic hormones promote expression of proteins while lipophillic hormones create new proteins via gene manipulation..

Yeah, though alot of people don't know how important proteins are in the body. Most people know it's a "building block" but many don't know much else about it.

Okay :p Did you know the gastrocnemius calf muscle can help in a leg curl? It's attached above the knee. However, the muscle can't contract from two places at the same time (like the hamstrings can) so it can only help in a leg curl if your fot is dorisflexed. This is why it's easier to do ham curls with the foot dorisflexed. If you really want to isolate the hams you have to point the toes away from your body. This will flex the gastrocnemius, so that it can't help the other way when you leg curl.

Tập tạ để khỏe mạnh hơn

That's how you say "Lift weights and get stronger" in Vietnamese.

The Vietnamese language has 6 tones: low, falling, flat, slow rising, broken rising, and high. Three of those tones are used in the sentence above.

It shares about 50% of it's words with Chinese, however is pronounced and written completely differently.

Anh yeu em = I love you (from a man to woman) pronounced 'ahn ee-ew em'
Em yeu anh = I love you (from a woman to a man)

(*I guess it would be anh yeu anh (man to man), note that the f-word was not used, so no infraction please he, he )

so, the 50% of the words they share are written and pronounced completely differently.. wouldn't that make them completely different words?..
