Okay this is my first real attempt at changing my life style.

I weigh in at 267 and i am 5'8

My doctor suggested that the next time I weigh in is when I see her next February 4

that is two months from now

and then she said weigh myself only once or twice a month

since I have over one hundred pounds to loose

I figure this will help me psychologically. So I can set foot on the scale and go "wow" and it will motivate me to keep going.

Also I heard scales aren't acurate anyway because of water weight.

They say when your clothes feel looser and can fit into smaller sizes that's when you see the difference.

So what do you guys say about the whole scale thing?

there are a ton of threads on this topic already... and basically it's do what works best for you -but DO NOT OBSESS over the number on the scale.

if you do weigh at frequent intervals - wear the same thing and at the same time... otherwise there will be drastic fluctuations.

measurements are a much more accurate assessment of how you're doing...

A pound of fat is 3500 calories - but just 10 calories eaten can make a difference on the scale so people tend to get really hung up on that number...

What Mal said.

I weigh very seldom. I do track progress in different ways more frequently though such as measurements and pictures.

like the guys above said don't get too hung up on scale. I do it too and weigh my self every morning but I just don't get too frustrated if it fluctuates. I was stuck at 195 for a good period of time after loosing 17 pounds really quickly. Then I thought what the hell is going on. I kept my same diet and even though I was stuck on 195 my jeans, my watch on my wrist and other stuff became looser. Right now I am on 188lbs. Scale goes up and down all the time so the best is to weigh your self every week or 2 weeks.

I weigh everyday, but like these guys said, you can't dwell on the numbers there because they're not accurate. However, as wildly as the numbers can fluctuate, you can get a grasp of downward trends. Measurements with a tape are actually much better, but I weigh everyday to make sure that I stay on track.

As far as the clothes thing goes, I always weigh naked (right out of bed in the morning) so the only fluctuation is in my actual body weight. :)

I weigh every day (in the morning, right before I get into the shower) for one simple reason: I've never gained a significant amount of weight while weighing every day, and I've never lost a significant amount of weight without weighing every day. So I stick to what works for me.

But like everyone else said, if you weigh every day, you need to not obsess about what the scale says on any given day. For instance, I know (based on history) that this is hormonally a week when the scale is likely to go down fast. But a week from now, I'm likely to go a full week or even more without seeing any downward movement at all, despite eating and exercising similarly to right now. And the week after that, the scale will move downward fast again. Does that make the no movement week fun? No, I still grumble. But I don't despair, because I knew it was coming, and I know it will go.

For me, changing clothing size isn't motivating day-to-day. Long-term, yes, it's nice to be in smaller sizes. But it took me about 3 months to get out of 18s and into 16s, and another 3 months to get into larger 12s. (The smaller 12s are still too tight through the thighs.) I lost nearly 45 pounds in those 6 months, so I wasn't losing particularly slowly, either.

Lisa,

The scales can, and do lie!
Especially for females!

You can use how your clothes fit as a guide, you could get your body fat % measured as well.

An accurate scale doesn't lie. It measures what it's supposed to.

What happens is people read it as measuring something that it doesn't.

Finding an accurate scale isn't always easy though... If my scale gives consistent results I'm satisfied but is it accurate? It's close enough to the scale at the gym... so it'll do...
