Speed Reading

Just curious to know if anyone has taken a speed reading course and their thoughts on it?

I am thinking about taking one soon and think that it should be a good tool for future reading.

Guess not. So has anyone finished reading this post then? Slow pokes.

LOL!

I admit I never saw this post.

Oh!....To answer your question and to give worthless information to your topic.....no I havent studied it or taken any classes. But I can sure the hell read fast......( :) )

I checked out a book from the library called Triple Your Reading Speed. I did the speed/comprehension test and I found I read 219 wpm and have a 71% comprehension.

The book is supposed to help you triple, so my goal is 657 wpm and greater then 71% comprehension.

Hopefully it works.

I am a natural speed reader, but out of curiosity I have checked into that sort of thing (if I can read 2000 wpm, why not make it 20000 :D). I actually have that one, and it seems pretty decent. You gotta grab the material for the little homework assignments they give you, though, if I recall correctly, so I hope you noticed that.

As far as speed reading goes, it does work, if you have the discipline to stick with it. And I'm sure you do. It can be kind of taxing on the eyes at higher speeds, but whatever.

Photoreading is supposed to be the new big thing, now, and I have that program as well, but I've yet to utilize it. Guess it's not that high of a priority.

This part of your post confused me. You have the book by Cutler? I dont see any homework assignments.

Somehow I knew you would have some experience with this. ;)

I also am a natural speed reader and can read several thousand pages a month, if i was reading a series of books i liked.

Usually I pick a 500-600 page book once a month and finish it in 2 weeks.

Haha, yeah. My nerdiness does tend to show. :p

The one by Cutler, yeah, I'm pretty sure. I mean I read it a couple years ago, but I remember the tests you're talking about, and later once you get into the drills and stuff he suggests different reading material (some short stories, a play or two and a few novels, I think). You use them as a benchmark for your progress, and it has to be those specific works (because of the simple question and answer format of the comprehension testing). I may be way wrong, though, was just pointing it out incase you want to get a head start on grabbing them too.

I also recall that most of the rest of your practice material can just be whatever. You simply periodically assess your wpm by timing yourself. Something like that.

I think you mean an avid reader. When I say I'm a "natural speed reader" I mean I use speed reading methods to read at speeds exceeding 2000 wpm, without ever having been taught or consciously practiced the methods (eye movement speed, direction, and getting rid of bad habits like subvocalizing, etc). I also have an unusually high comprehension, but I didn't want to mention it because I already look like I'm bragging about it. -_-

Ya, when i get to the good parts of a book i like to slow it down and read every word so i can get the most out of it. But when i get to boring parts i start skimming and glancing at every other word, enough so i can understand whats going on..but fast enough so i can hurry up and get to the good parts :D

I took a speed reading course. It was a 6 week course. I liked it; you can never read enough or fast enough when you're an English major.

Well done Phate89.....kudos !

I'm an avid reader as well and try to polish off at least a couple of relatively lengthy non-fiction hard covers a month as well ( if I can :) ) - I'm hoping to crack the ' 500 hard covers read ' milestone sometime this later this year as a matter of fact.

curious - what was the last book you read and what are you currently reading ?

I just finished reading all Tom Clancy books, and the last one was the Sum of All Fears ( excellent book ), which i finished yesterday.

Anyone know any books similiar to Tom Clancy with the whole " CIA, war, cold war" theme going ? or any other authors like that?

I'm pretty big on Fiction, though I don't mind non fictions books either. If I read non-fiction its usually something i'm interested in, usually something about nutrition, politics, philosophy, or something.

In that respect, you're more well rounded in your reading tastes than I am.:)

I tend to stay in my ' rut ' reading mostly biographies and books on history / politics etc.

I suppose I really should try and read some fiction now and again.

Ya. I like fiction because its another outlet for me, along with lifting and music.

Yesterday I was in a pissy mood, wasn't a good day, mom pissed me off somehow so i just took the car. drove up to the top of the mountain, parked right next to the cliff so i had a great view of the city from up top. And just layed on my hood and finished the book.

It totally cleared my mind and i felt much better.
