Sparrows Experiment

Thanks G8r..it stinks, I'm very sad about this injury...but not out of the game yet!!

I went to my regular dr this morning (who is a runner) and referred me to a podiatrist for next week. She said I can still run but keep more rest days between run days, back off a tad and really be dillgent on the preventative care.

I had a killer workout yesterday for tempo workout at the 1.44 mile course

warm up 1.44
2.33 miles @6:41
.4 jog recovery
2.46 miles @6:52
1.44 cooldown

Man I felt so great but I'm paying for it in a big way today :(

T-My last long run was 2 weeks ago because of this injury. My pace was 7:39 and that felt comfortably uncomfortable! so yes, thats faster. My old pace was 8:10ish.

I hope to get back to distance pretty soon

I'm glad to hear that the speedwork is paying off... much more reassuring that someone else other than me finds that out... t!

Still suffering but on the mend. I did my track workout on Monday and hurt all the way through. My times were a good 10-20 seconds slower than last week. Part of the reason was that it was early morning and I was more stiff...the other reason was I was alone on that track with little motivation.

I haven't run since

I have cross trained all week. My running coach urged me to take 2 days off between my runs to have time to heal. I'm also supposed to be running "slower" and doing all sorts of preventative stuff for the plantar. Which I have been. I have been 2 days pain free now.

Today is my tempo run but I'm going to run it smart and not even bring my garmin so I'm not discouraged. I'll run my distances and run them comfortably. To me the lesser evil is that I'm still able to RUN-even if I have to back off. It could be a lot worse.

Its worth it to take a few weeks of slower running than to try to keep my paces and stay injured for months.

My current read is Lance Armstrongs book "Its Not About the Bike". Its very inspiring and making me take my worries off my trivial problems! Definitely puts things in perspective!

This is a really tough injury and I feel for you. I can't remember if I posted this site before but it has a lot of good info...

thanks to both of you. Yes Tsil, I've had this once before and it was in college when I got a bit too ambitious running too much. I ended having to STOP running and got into my swimming again. thats when I wasn't running to compete in ANYthing so it wasn't that heartbreaking.

its different now :(

I went to the podiatrist yesterday. Got the xrays back and there is a heel spur on BOTH feet! Only one foot hurts. he was as surprised as I was to see that. he tried to stretch my foot back (towards my shin) and I can't even get 90 degrees. yikes. told me what i'm doing is good and to "keep on keeping on" (pain is manageable these days) and told me it will likely be something I rub up against my whole running life. he put in for custom orthotics. Said the ones I have had for 2+ years are worthless. they don't even support my arch anymore (I have a very high arch and I supinate). hopefully my insurance will go for it again. he thinks they will considering the bone spurs.

Anyway, in the meantime I'm getting some wicked cross training in :) i'm still doing my runs 3x a week but very little speed. I've tried to keep my tempo workout up and just back off a bit. My long run pace is about 7:40 now and thats fairly comfortable for about 8 miles. i'm trying not to go over 10 for now. thats when the pain comes back. My tempo pace is about 6:54 at about 85% of my max. So for now I can totally live with these paces as long as they don't get worse. Spinning, road biking (I'm finally on my new bike) and swimming are getting pretty strong. I've been doing more bike/run bricks (real bike, and real road run) and thats been awesome. something I sorely lacked last year and I believe killed me for my half iron.

Had a pretty successful week. I'm on a 3 day "vacation" in Sonoma this weekend (and WHY am I writing to you all?!) so I'm not sure how much activity I'll get in...other than walking to and from wineries tasting their delicious product ;)

I'm only at about 10 miles for the week so far and thats just track and tempo workout total. Yesterdays tempo work was a 2.3 loop twice (after a 2 mile warm up) with .2 recovery between. I held 6:52 on the first loop and 7:15 on the second. I was actually chatting with a runner during that second loop so I was happy it wasn't worse. Seems like my workouts have been getting sabotaged a lot lately due to being too chatty. Time to put those headphones back on. The foot hurt very little during the run but I am hurting today..and I'm hurting in both feet. I think part of my problem is that other than my running shoes I don't have any that are plantar friendly and then I pay for it. I can't wear my running shoes all the time.

Its all frustrating.

Ohhh my goodnessssssss. That avatar...:luxlove::luxlove::luxlove:

Sorry to hear about your injuries. Battling my own as well. Have barely run the last 3 weeks. :/

Love ya Sparrow but u aren't fooling anyone telling us you're on vacation....whatever! Keep up the good work and hold yourself back so you can recover and not overtrain. You seem almost too dedicated/commited to your cause. If I've ever seen a flaw in you, it's not holding back when you need to. It's great to be commited but you are so overwhelmingly dedicated that sometimes I think it's to your detriment. You are a SUPREME ATHLETE, no doubt. Keep us posted on everything that's going on. You are an absolute inspiration. I may be tapping into your knowledge to complete a half marathon by the end of the year. Thanks for your faithful documentation. It keeps me going. Take care, Greg

Well I have lots of flaws (don't we all?) But you are right in what you say. I have always been this way with everything I do, and its hard to turn off or tone down! Its just me! This injury is going to force me to slow and back off so while I can get bugged about that, I'm trying to choose to see it as a blessing in disguise. It was time to back the mileage for a bit and gain some perspective. I have no major anything until aug 1 so I'm working on trying to slow down and smell the roses and not get uptight about "losing fitness" or whatever. I think right now I'm just grateful for what I still can do. We head out for a family vacation next week for a week and that'll be good practice to chill out

Back from San Diego with the fam. LOVE SoCal.

Still battling PF and I'm currently not running. Its very discouraging but I'm trying to stay positive about it all. It has been 2 weeks and not a lot of progress on the pain scale.

Doing a lot of biking and swimming and aquajogging.

Getting lazer and ultrasound for the foot and started running a little bit again. With major arch support I can run pretty well. Did a modified track workout on Tues and my times were all on my sprint paces...but felt controlled and not working as hard as usual to hit paces. Yeah I'm tapered but I was pretty happy about that after not running so long. Next day pain wasn't too terrible

I think this journal is a lost cause :)

The foot is still healing and I'm still getting therapy for it. With it I can run. I'm racing a 5K tomorrow trying to beat 20:34 but I'm not expecting much having not trained speed for a while.

Doing a sprint tri in 2 weeks to break in the season and hoping to platform for it.

Then just another 8 weeks till the half iron. A few short months ago I was thinking my run was my strong point for that thing. Now I'm not so confident! I'll finish though.

I have lost 5 hard pounds and it makes a difference

Sparrow, you are just like me, other than being a lot younger, having 2 X chromosomes, blonde and a lot hotter, in that I have leg/foot issues (shin splint in left leg), am doing a sprint tri on June 6, and another half iron on July 19. But, I have gained 5 pounds over the last few weeks.

Good luck!

You too G8r!

The 5k went better than I thought it would. I've done no speed for a long time and a quarter of the running I used to do but it was all good. I ran a 21:07 and I was the first in my age group, second girl overall. Obviously I didn't have a TON of competition because this isn't some phenomenal time, but it was still fun. I almost got outdone by a 12 year old!

Today was one of the best workouts I've had in a while. I met some friends at the river trail before dawn and we rode 45 and then ran 5. My 45 was a 19.8 average and my 5 was 8:33. later I swam for a few hours with my kids. Next a big fat bbq dinner.

Things are going pretty well. My workouts are getting more intense and the foot is holding up for the most part. I have been doing a lot more biking and I'm starting to really love my new ugly bike. It took a little while.

I'm up to riding 50 and running 6 right after. The one thing I didn't do last year was significant bike to run bricks. I never did anything close to these distances in a row. Its been REALLY GREAT training. I'm able to still hold 8:15-20 on the run part after a 18-19 ave on the bike.

Running has been slow going. I have no real long run to speak of right now since my son has baseball on the one day I can do it. Its a blessing in disguise. I know I'd return to it too quickly and hurt myself again. I've been attending track and tempo workouts with the team. I do a modified track workout-still working hard and anaerobic for much of the time and I push the tempo. I think I'm probably at about 16 miles for the week total right now :) I have a long way to go.

First tri of the season this weekend. Just a sprint but I hope to kill it. I've done plenty of FAST training. Just trying to break 1:28-last years time at the same race.

adios

Had an amazing race!

Total time 1:27:11. A minute and a half faster than last year's race. It was a sprint .5mi swim/16 mi bike/5K run. This put me 1st in my age group by a few MINUTES! I also got 7th female overall out of 600 racers.

Then today I raced the run part of the olympic distance (6.2 miles) with a friend who wanted pacing. We did somewhere around 47 minutes. GREAT WEEKEND!
