Skipping?

I was listening to the radio this week and they were interviewing a personal trainer. He said that skipping is a good exercise to do to burn fat, and that 10 minutes is equivalent to 20 minutes jogging.

He also said its good to use for interval training. How does that work (i missed that part of the interview)???

I haven't really done skipping, but I'm sure it helps. As for the interval training.. ask errtu140. He seems to know a lot about interval training.

lol I know nothing about nothing. I haven't tried skipping but I wouldn't be caught doing it either, lol. Interval training is just changing the intensity higher and lower like every minute or 30 seconds. so if your interval training with skipping jump higher and try to go as fast as you can for 1 minute, man thats gotta look strange seeing someone skipping at a super fast rate down the road lol. Dont listen to Nymphetamine shes Canadian........

ouch! r we gonna start a war with Canadians?? Not a good idea since the Mod happens to be Canadian :D

I wouldn't try what errtu suggested of interval training with skipping unless you are very experienced. I was in boxing/kickboxing for about 8 years and skipping is a major part of our training and it is very intense. Instead, I would skip at your normal pace for 2 minutes and then do speed skipping (and doubles if you can) for the last 10-15 seconds of the 2 minutes and then take an equal break to that of your speed skipping. I would recommend 10 seconds to start ... and maybe even a longer break. Since our boxing rounds were 3 minutes, we did 5-by-3 minute rounds with the last 30 seconds of speed skipping ... that might be a good goal.

If you want to do interval training (formally called HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training) for jogging, this is an easy guide to follow:
- jog between each lamp post and sprint between every second

if you are running on a treadmill try:
- 45 sec jogging, 15 running at a difference of 1.5 miles/hour

eliptical trainer:
- same as jogging, but go by RPM's about a difference of 15-20

cool. i'll give it a go.

Going to go and buy a rope on Saturday.

By break do you mean stop skipping altogether?

I think the guy on the radio said to do it for more than 15 minutes you'd have to be mega fit!! - def not me!! :p So i'll start with the 2 minutes and 10 like u sugested and try and do that 3 times. hmmm might have to get a watch/clock with second hand...

so.. you're american.

so with HIIT is it best to do same amount of time running and jogging, or spend more time jogging then running?

first of all you don't know if I'm american lol. And I was kind of kidding about the HIIT jogging, I don't do it so I just made something that sounded good up. Just jog it seems a lot less harder on the joints. Mods don't know nothing lol.(you better have caught the double negative) have a nice day and good luck on your driinking water

If you are going to do HIIT, then you do more jogging than running. There is a large variation of what you can do for intervals, but I'm confortable with 40 seconds of jogging, then 20 seconds of running, but that's on machines (bike, eliptical and treadmill) ... i've never tried it outside.
... and what's a double negetive ... i'm not sure that i don't understand??

a double negative is when you say a sentence with like 2 negative things in it that cancel out and make it positive, like for example you DONT know NOTHING. which would make the dont and the nothing basically cancel out and make the sentence actually mean you know something lol. And for HIIT just basically do what you can as Cdnboy said. I try for 30 sec. each usually but I just got on a new program that does 1 min intervals.

alright, I guess I did assume you are american.. but I guess I don't know. So what are you? It's annoying how you know a lot about me, and I don't know alot about you.

Got my rope today!! There was a suprisingly large collection to choosse from!

I went for a fiber rope (rather than leather) and with weighted handles 9to work on my arms a bit at the same time.

I'm lighter now than i have been for a while so i'm expecting to hit a plateau unless i kick my exercise up a gear. I'm going to start on monday i'll let you know how i go.

i would actually recommend a leather one once you get the hang of it because you have a lot more control ... it can just get a little painful in the beginning with it whiping your legs :)

I lOVE jumping rope... you were mentioning something about needing a watch with a second hand... what I do for intervals is count my jumps... i do 35 slower, and then 15 fast.... or you could do 45 and 15 or whatever you want... I always forget to look at the watch or clock, so this works well and keeps me focused on what I am doing.

a fiber rope is soft and moves somewhat slowly through the air. A leather rope is solid and cuts through the air; this enables it to move fast with more control (for doing doubles, crosses, running, etc). You will find a fiber rope a little trickier to do anything but the standard skipping because it follows a bit behind in your motion because the air puts up a bit of resistance. The only problem with a leather one is that it acts a bit like a whip if you mess up ... it doesn't hurt that much unless you are doing some speed skipping, but it can get a bit annoying.

Ahh good idea... counting might help distract me from feeling tired too!! Hopefully meaning i can go for a bit longer. I used to do body step classes and found the distraction of trying to get the routine right ment i worked harder. Will try it tonight!

so I got a rope. It's a rubber one.. It's the only one I can find.. well there were fiber ones but I don't really like those. The rubber is ok. It's not really that heavy though which is not that great.. but who cares.
