Self Destructive Tendencies

Totally agree

Morning,

I've been online now since 1988, when folks accessed the Internet via command line tools without any of this new-fangled wysiwyg stuff! And I would definitely agree that online forums and communities etc. offer for the most part a solid resource for support and encouragement.

Sure, nowadays you have to be 'way more careful about your personal information online (back then, it was only us geeks who were posting, no David Rhodes at all!)...but still, I'd say if you know where to look, you can find incredible amounts of sincere support.

Data points,

Barbara

I'm just glad you're back on your way again, take it as a test. Sometimes life tests us ;)

Hey, Bigreen! Way to give yourself a kick in the patootie and get back on the programme! And even before waaay too much damage was done.

I currently seem to have plateaued, which really bites. I am determined, however, not to return to my old junk-food-anytime-anywhere ways, and put back on the 35 pounds I have just lost. I am still 21 lbs from my goal, and truly do want to reach it. I feel so much healthier and am finally starting to like what I see in the mirror again (or at least not burst into tears when I see myself!).

I have been encouraged by your post. It is helpful, somehow, to know that there are others out there who are really having to work hard to keep on track with their eating. I wish you all the best on your continued journey! And many thanks to those who are in maintenance yet still take the time to advise us.

Cheers from :eh:

Steve is absolutely correct about the psychological side of things. It is without question the most important part of treating obesity.

Treating people's self-esteem/courage/goal setting/accountability/attitudes towards peer pressure & media pressure are so much more important than telling someone to eat less and exercise more.

Just curious,

But why do you write every single word in caps? Thought it was just one post, but it seems like you capitalize the first letter of every word of every post. How come? Just curious.

tis cus i leave my caps on. when i type alot its in all caps because it helps me read my I.M.s when i have a couple of conversations going. but this forum only caps the first letter as i post. havent ever seen that before either.

To the original poster, thanks for sharing.

One thing for folks to keep in mind is that when we have those brief binges, the scale may say that we gained 5-7 pounds, but a good deal of that is also water weight. During the binge, we probably weren't drinking water and we've definitely been eating stuff that is high in sodium (making us retain water). So don't judge yourself too much on the weight unless two days of high water intake don't fix the weight by much...

For me the battle with the mind has to do with awareness. It's not really about right/wrong, positive/negative... That way I'm not judging and getting down on myself. I ask myself whether a behavior is in conflict with my goal; if it is getting in the way of my goal then I need to be aware of it and focus on doing something else besides that behavior.

I think that focusing on the eating or working out can be defeating in a way. We focus on whether we are eating right or not eating right or working out enough. If we instead focus on the simple idea of "being healthy," or "reaching and maintaining my goal." then we don't obsess about the food or the workouts. When we focus on things, it draws our attention to them, so if we focus on food too much, it draws us toward the food. That make any sense to folks?

"Is this getting in the way of my goal?" "OK, (no judgments), I need to curtail that and focus back on the goal."

Yea, I think pretty much most members realize this around here.

That's awesome that this works for you. And I agree with you to an extent.... I just don't think it's that simple for a lot of people. However, the reason it's not that simple may be the simple fact that people don't have strong/vivid enough of goals to correct a negative action.

Goals are more than targets.... at least they should be more than targets IMO.

They need to be targets that are emotionally charged.

I agree with this mentality for some.
