Scirion Institute of Physiology

I was hired to be a proctor/trainer for this company. My job description is to give out tests to people who want to become trainers & sometimes maybe teach a class. I still have to pass their test before i start. I heard the test is pretty difficult. The are offering study guides for $285 but you get that reimbursed when you pass the test. I was wondering if anyone has bought these study guides before & if they are alot of help? I really couldn't find much info about this company on the net & i was wondering if anyone knows if this is a reputable company & any other information they might have about it?

Their program is very good and the exam is insane! Don't even think it'll be like NASM or some others because it isn't. I got their study materials and they helped a lot. They provide a ton of information and it's very well laid out. A friend of mine passed without their study materials but he has a Masters Degree in exercise physiology. They are not as well known as NASM but their reputation is very good from those who know them. Good luck...

The Scirion program is very good. They have proctor centers that only accept their cert because of the caliber of the written. It's different than most and their study materials are always updated and current. WITS is also a good one to consider.

Scirion

I belong to a gym where Scirion was advertising and promoting their certification program about a year ago. The proctor was a regular at the gym, and it was convenient, so I signed up. I passed the written exam and the practical exam. Good thing. In addition to 20+ years of weight-training experience, I devoted a lot of time and money into study materials.
Now that I have the certification, I am not able to find employment. 24-Hour refused to hire me because they'd not heard of Scirion. I took an AFAA Group Certification class a few weeks ago, and the instructor said he also had never heard of Scirion. When I told him I'd paid $800. for materials and exams, he just laughed and said to always go with the three big names in fitness - ACA, ISAA, and AFAA. I'm at a loss of what to do in order to be taken seriously as a trainer.

First off, an AFAA instructor should not be laughing at anybody because the AFAA exam is the worst program that exists. The problem that you'll have these days is politics is a major part of our industry when it used to not be. 24 hour fitness is a complete embarrassment to our industry and you really should not be trying to work there. Have you seen the people that work there? You're looking for work in places where there is no work. If you have a scirion cert, go some place where you can make real money or start your own business and do in home or corporate training.

Agreed! AFAA, ACE or ISSA are pretty basic programs compared to scirion institute. The AFAA program for personal trainers is quite ridiculous and really shouldn't be considered a national cert. Scirion isn't as well known but that doesn't mean they aren't one of the best.

I too have been looking into employment and certification through Scirion. However, like most of you in this thread, I find very little information on the certification or the company. If any of you have been certified through this company or are employed by Scirion I would love to hear what you have to say about the job, curriculum and exams.

Their program is very hard. You might be better off starting out with ACE or ISSA if you are just starting into the industry. I like scirion because they don't seem to care about trying to certify the entire world. They keep their prices high, their exams diffficult and their program competent by having both a written and practical proctored exam. The same reasons I think ACSM is one of the best because they keep their program hard and try to exclusively cater to college grads. Some of these other online programs are so easy to get certified through that it has turned the personal trainer industry into a complete joke. Anybody can become a trainer these days for fifty bucks.

I worked for them in 2000 and it was a good experience. I would recommend working there if you have a personal training business that you're running because they allow you to schedule the exams anytime you want which makes it easy to do both and make as much money as possible. Back then they paid $80 per exam and some months we did really well. I work in the energy drink industry now and so I don't train anymore but scirion is a great place to learn the ins and outs of the pt industry.

I've never heard of Scirion, either. I would recommend that if you are wanting to personal train, go with the NSCA C-PT (National Strength and Conditioning Association Certifed Personal Trainer) or the ACSM H/FI (American College of Sports Medicine Health and Fitness Instructor). Those are the ones that I know will get you noticed and help bring in some money.

They’re more advanced so a new guy probably would go for something more generic like ACE. When first starting out, you want to make sure you get your cert and so signing up for the scirion program is a bit risky if you’ve never taken a cert exam before. Unless of course you’ve never heard of them and have no idea how hard the exam is. I think people will start to hear more of them as they spread across the country because of the scrutiny some of the online cert programs are now under.

I took the exam in 2006 and passed. The only thing I did not like about the program is that you have to sell the program to gyms. Most gyms did not want to hear of it because there is a fee involved after a certain period of time to be a host facility. Also, no ones heard of it and I can not find where it is accredited. I also was not impressed with the study material. Basically I am out $285 for a certification that no one will accept.

Scirion is a ripoff. I went through the test procedure and the test was hard but bogus. After you pass, they want you to generate the sales with absolutely on help. Do yourself a favor and stay away. And also, no one in any fitness club has ever heard of Scirion.
