School lunches

My oldest son has started first grade. I'm appalled at the ****ing bull**** they serve these kids for lunch. The damn schools preach nutrition and fitness and serve the kids this absolute garbage. Pizza, cheese sticks, fried chicken nuggets, mac n cheese.

WTF!!!! What a ****ing hypocrisy. I can't believe we allow the schools to feed our kids this junk I wouldn't even give to my ****ing dog.

We only allow our son to eat this crap once a week and he can choose whatever day he wants to eat it. Its just the influence I can see coming to eat this trash. I'm pissed that schools can't seem to make something a bit more nutritious. something needs to be done here.

Ok rant over.

I remember school lunches... taters tots, curly fries, nachos... and those counted as like... main courses? Hm. But hey, there's chocolate milk available. Dairy! :D

I don't get it. If you're so concerned, than why doesn't he just take a packed lunch to school? I don't even live in america, but I'm constantly reminded in whichever way how bad the lunch menu is, so why doesn't every parent send their kid to school with a packed lunch? When i went to school, i would guess that no more than 10% of the students actually ate what was available to them at the tuckshop (which they payed for) and most of them were the overweight, lazy students, with lazy parents. Is it not common for a kid or the kids parents to prepare their own lunch meals or am i just missing the whole point? Seems like a simple solution to me.

Yeah, pack some lunch for your kids and send it with them. though, there will probably be peer pressure to eat the junk, since it's like mcdonalzz and it's leet.

Yeah i was thinking the same thing, but it's kinda silly when you think about it. I would never have given into peer pressure over something as silly as that.

We've been looking at preschools for my son. At the last one we went to they were talking about how they served nutritious lunches and they ask if parents pack snacks that they be nutritious...then we went by the kitchen where a 400 lb woman was scooping processed cheese out of a huge can into bowls to make nachos for the kids ugh!

If its anything like my school system, at the beginning (1-4 grade) everyone brings their own lunch from home but once they get to school they start trying to trade things for dollars in order to try to buy the tater tots and curly fries. One kid would sell his homework every day, kids would scrape for quarters under the vending machines, its amazing what children will do for junk food.

As we progress to middle school, the same will continue to occur, but more and more parents will give up even packing lunches and will just give kids money. More bargaining will ensue.

By high school kids are giving their parents the big FU when it comes to nutrition. Either the parents gave up years ago, or by now they babysit for their own lunch money - either way, its curly fry city! WOOHOO! Of course by now some of the health conscious kids will have decided they want a boyfriend, or have joined a sports team and will be begging mommy for a tuna fish sandwich. Others will be fat and have realized the error of selling that lovely pink eraser all those years ago for a packet of tater tots... still more will be fat and not care as they cram nuggets into their mouth.

Ah, American school systems.

i agree with the others. i'd say pack him a lunch and healthy snacks if you can.

Read his whole post.:angry2: He DOES give his son a packed lunch. He said he only allows him to eat the school lunch once a week. It's the principle of the matter that he's appalled with and I can see why.

They are so disgusting. My kids ONLY eat what I send, period. Thankfully this isn't an issue for them, but man, you'd think they could come up with better things than that crap.......

thank you Calcium.

The peer pressure thing is what concerns me most as my kids all get older. Glad my tax dollars are going to support all the kids eating crap and getting fat.

Yeah I know isn't that great? Gotta love our tax system.

While I do agree with all of this, you can't forget one thing. Sure, schools get tax money and public funding (if it's a public school of course), but they are still a business in the sense that they generate income from sporting events, selling food to kids at lunch, etc. I mean, it's simple business, sell more and make more money. Are kids going to buy a broiled chicken breast with steamed veggies or hot dogs, pizza, etc?

There has to be societal change for the eating to change, and I don't see that happening any time soon. Sure the schools selling crap is "wrong", but they are just catering to what kids are raised to want.

Business or not. A proper school should set an example. Having nothing but junk food readily available for purchase is pathetic and stupid. Shame on them.

I used to eat this crap a few times per week at school! Now look how ugly and weak I am! (scare tactic)

It's very true, they are doing jsut that, and it's really sad. I saw a show once about how these kids were obese, and there was a trainer who was trying to help them improve their diet and exercise habits. She went to the school to see what is offered and freaked out. The people in the cafeteria said that they are catering to what the kids want, if they made other thins, they don't buy it and they want to make money...

so sick eh?

So it is a business, BUT, they should be held accountable for what they serve. they can provide healthier choices....

Schools take the easy way and the cheapest way, that's the problem. Unless parents say something, altogether, things are going to stay the same for many years to come.

Nah, nice way of thinking but doesn't work that way. Setting a nice happy example doesn't make any damn money.

Yeah, I agree, at least healthy options should be served...I would imagine they'd make up about 5% of sales though.

Like at my college here, we have many dining halls. I rarely eat at a dining hall, but when I do I go to the "alternative" dining hall where they serve organic health foods from local farms (falafels, vegan options, non greasy paninis, really good healthy foods). It is the only dining hall that is never full. The crowded dining halls are the ones with pizza bars, make-your-own-burrito buffets, and hot dogs. Alas.

But back to non-college schools, where the kids can't escape to off-campus eateries during school hours... If they offered only healthy options, and no junk food at all, guess what? Kids would get hungry eventually.... :eating:
