Running Form

OK, I paid attention to my brain and my breathing for you....

when my breathing comes into my mind- I automatically let myself breath heavy a few times, then I glance behind me, and blow out my nose to each side, and take a deep breath in thru my nose slowly. that settles me in again, and I forget about it until I start to get winded again, length of time depends on pace.

I like to breath thru my mouth heavy 3 or 4 times, and then blow out nose and take one nice long slow breath in thru the nose.

I read somewhere at some point, that the mouth breathing feeds the muscles the oxygen they need, but it is important to breath thru the nose some because it helps the brain from thinking it is so depleted and tired.

I tried breathing in thru nose and out thru mouth, and the holes in my nose are not big enough to keep up with demand.

Sparrows comment of looking out to the horizon really helped me today.

There is no way that I'm quitting. I'm not a quitter and I don't lie to myself either;) You can lie to everybody else and tell people that you run 6 miles everyday (even though you barely do 2 miles every two weeks), because it may make you feel better about yourself and you might even start believing that you are doing everything you can. BUT everytime you tell yourself in the morning that you are going to go to the gym (not smoke/eat healthy) and then don't do it you are setting yourself up for a failure.

I actually started walking/jogging and recently running a year ago (exactly on my birthday 4/19), which was coincidentally also my last day of cancer treatment. In the beginning, I had zero energy so I just started walking around the lake on along the beach. Sometimes I was so pooped out that I didn't even leave my car, sat there for a little bit and then went home:( I had my iPod, so I just went and bought the Nike+ sensor to monitor my mileage. Anyways, on 4/19/2008 (exactly one year later) I had 750 miles on .it

Thanks for all your help FF and Sparrow!

UPDATE: I had computer foot analysis done at local Healthy Living Expo and it showed that I have extremely high arches. Who knew...I always thought that I have the flattest feet ever. The guy who was doing the analysis suggested professionally fitted inserts fore my running shoes, but his office is way far away. I'll just have to go somewhere else.
I also have to visit my local running store. I pass it almost every day on my way to work, but I never stop by because it is downtown and there is no parking and parallel parking terrifies me:yelrotflmao: They also have running group, but I think I'm still too slow for them.
Anyways, that's it:)

Running Form
2) Breathing
3) Hydration gear

Form:

I didn't read through all of the responses but I bet there were a lot of answers on the running form. You have your heal strikers, your midfoot runners, and your toe runners. A midfoot approach is going to be the recommended method but personally, I think you should run the way it feels natural to you. Trying to alter your running style could lead to injury.

What I would recommend for running form is this: a shorter stride which will provide a higher cadence. If you can watch yourself run, try to keep from bouncing. Other than that, run naturally.

I would also recommend, if you haven't done this already, go down to a real running store and have them fit you into a pair of running shoes. If you have any mechanical issues, a good shoe should help correct that issue.

Breathing:

You can mouth breathe, it's fine. Ideally, your lungs would like warm, moist air (which is why your nose runs when it's cold), but mouth breathing is fine.

Hydration Gear:

Top level athletes use hydration gear, you can too. I like the amphipod equipment. The single, horizontal bottle with the pack is what I use.

Sorry for not reading the entire thread, it was long and I'm still working.

WOw...form...that is so funny...I've been told I run funny!! Having run track all my life...I run with my hands out like knives cutting the wind...I'm fast, but form...hhhmmm...well you can not be too straight up and down...or you will not go forward, but being too far over your feet could pose issues! : - ) I also grew up walking around with a book on my head for postures sake... (my mother...her encyclopedias!)...try it, perhaps in general your posture could use some help. Best wishes+
