Running: A New Endeavor

From the running/cycling forum on Feb 15 2008:

Until about a year ago I was always the type of guy who just lifted weights, ate like crap and did no form of cardio or endurance training. Then I bought an elliptical machine mostly for heart health, but in the process started losing body fat. When the weight loss stalled I ended up joining this forum and did a total 180 on my diet and even improved my lifting routine. I've lost about 35 lbs and I'm sitting around 10% BF

Anyway, I was lifting this morning and heard a spot on the radio about an upcoming 5K race. I'm going to do it! I've been looking into race calendars on line and I feel pretty excited about it. I figure I'll start with 5K since I know I could run that right now and maybe expand from that. There's also an annual "climb the Carew Tower" in Cincinnati (45 floors) benefiting the American Lung Association.

I'll be around pumping you guys for info. First of all, I'll need some advice about shoes, especially since I have occasional knee pain.

I will run in a addition to my lifting and will post my training and progress here for all to see.

The earliest race I could find was a 4K Leap Day race in Downtown Cincinnati:

I signed up and training begins Now!

...Well, I went out this morning and felt really good. I only did about 2 miles because it was 22 degrees with a 4 degree windchill...the wind was killing my face. People were looking at me like I was crazy.

The only pain I felt was a tightening in my calves. Not the gastrocnemius, but about halfway between them and my ankles. Just a little muscular pain, nothing bad. I warmed up my knees with mountainclimbers and preemptively iced them when I got in.

Cool Journal man, hope to see you progress nicely. I am thinking about signing up for that Feb 29th race too...$12.29 to me is a week's budget though! :D

yea good luck. you are cutting right now right? just curious, as i would find it hard to bulk and train for this at the same time.

I really don't plan on ever doing an actual bulk again. I plan to stay basically the size I am...maybe lose that last little bit of fat on my lower abs then maintain. If I ever decide to put on some more mass, it will be very slowly. I enjoy being lean.

MarkMyWords...I'd like to see you out there. Let me know if you do it.

Thanks Drex, I figure when I'm in MN I can cross country ski when there's too much snow to run:D

Alright Gooch! Great goals, looking forward to watching your progress!

Thanks Sparrow. I think I'll use you as an information source if you don't mind! I'm new to running and have already gotten some good advice from my friends G8R80 and FF among others

FF, thanks for the shoes you recommended. I didn't end up getting the exact same model, but was informed they have a lot of similar qualities....at least now they won't call us "shoe buddies" LOL

FlyinFree,

I know how you like your shoe porn. These are my new kicks...

hey those are sweet! I recently got some new ones too. I matched FF for a time...but then switched out.

those are asics gel 1120's. They're more like my old gel 2120s but cheaper :) I had the gel cumulus but they just felt too bulky with all the cush.

Thanks, Phate, I never hung out in this area much, but it looks like I've been missing a lot. I'm going to check out yours too.

No running today, Squats, Bench, Rows. I'm chomping at the bit to run some more, but I want to take it easy at first. Tomorrow I'm going to do 3 miles; I don't care how cold it is.....Damn, we got about 2 inches of snow last night

Sweet, we'll have to meet up there.

Here's a stupid newbie runner question...Do you pick up your t-shirt and packet there even if you pre-register or do they send it to you?
