Rich

Rich, the elevation in Boulder didn't bother me after I had been there for about a week. I did a sprint last year in Boulder after a week and had some good times (for me).

Took an easy day training today, but it turned out to be the most rewarding and flat out fun day ever. I was going to do a race day pace for 5 miles but before i finished getting ready i grabbed my 7 year old sons stuff and and had him join me for a relaxed 3 miler. He did great and it felt wonderful, i think this is going to be a regular occurance. Then we cheated after we finished and stopped at the ice cream shop and talked about our future running plans. Sometime the miles and the speed have to wait, dad and son ice cream rules.

Packed and Ready

Packed and ready for challenge number 2. Saturday at 7:30 AM start the MS 150 from North of Pittsburgh to Lake Erie. Saturday is to be 80 miles with an optional 20 miles. Will see how conditions are and how I feel, might just try to register a "Century". Will post after I return from Erie.

Knock em dead! I'll be thinking about you tomorrow morning and it will surely inspire me to do do my squats and sprints like I mean business. Good luck and I know you will dig deep to give it your very best. I hope you will fill us all in with all your race details!!!

2 Down and 2 to go

Just got in after this weekends ride, after some self -evaluation late friday evening I made the decision not go for the century this time. Faced reality that I had trained for 150 miles over 2 days and don't screw with the plan. That being said, on Saturday I logged 86 miles and another 76 on Sunday. I passed up some designated rest areas so I would do solid blocks of 25 miles in preparation for August 9th Olympic distance Triathlon. Thanks everyone for your encouragement, I felt it along the entire trip. I will give some of the details tomorrow and a pain update which I am sure will be present. The "grunt candy" will help with some of the pain I am sure, but I do like feeling the pain, it lets you know you are alive.

Surprisingly not sore, just tight. Ate like a pig during the event days but that was necessary. I am back to the eating clean mode now. Rested and stretched yesterday and stripped down the bike, cleaned her off, polished her up and oiled her down. Now that I have built my base in the run and the bike (which I will maintain) its pool time!!! 1500 yard workout today, thursday and friday. Weights today and thursday. Run wednesday and friday. Off to the beach Saturday for a week of sand running and some open water swimming. When i return it will time for the bricks to commence.

Mel, his pics are in his album. Rich, compare your training to one of the standard olympic length triathlon programs and see how you stack up. I suspect you are well ahead of the curve.

Refresh my memory; did you do the MS 150 on a mountain bike? I thought you got a road bike.

Vacation

Back from vacation... did run 5 miles everyday while away.
Monday did a short run/swim brick 4 mile run followed immediately by (2) 500 yard swims. Starting to feel more confident about ability to finish.
Posted pics of the wild horses of Assateague Island that we encountered.

Friday 750 yard swim followed by (8) 50 yards. Threw on a shirt and HR monitor and did a 6 miler 1:08. Wednesday routine was the same except only 5 miles @ 56:00.
Planniing a 25 bike ride over rolling hills on country roads on Sunday.

Rich, for a triathlon/time trial bike, I would recommend a model with an aluminum frame, Shimano Ultegra, Sram Rival components or Campagnolo Chorus (these provide maximal value for the performance), although I wouldn't reject a Shimano 105 bike. Either 9 or 10 speed (I prefer 9 speed of the additional cost of 10 speed). Orbea, Trek, Cannondale, pretty much all the major manufacturers offer packages like this. The Orbea Ora is nice. I don't think you need carbon fiber at this time, but if you come upon a great deal with carbon fiber - go for it.

As for wheels, eventually you'll want to get some carbon fiber wheels and maybe a sold disc, but that is an entirely different discussion.

Ran 6 miles Saturday morning 1:02:00 and then took the boys to the lake for swimming and surprised to see eagles.
Swam monday morning (2) 1000 yards 1:25:00
will run 3 miles tonight.

Nice job!
