i was just wondering if anyone had managed to find any really low calorie foods that are possible to snack on throughout the day???

At the moment ive found Rice cakes.. they are about 29cal per slice.. 2 of those in a sitting and im ok. (58cal)

another thing i have found is crackerbread.. i can have about 4 slices of those (each at 19cal a slice) and feel better.. (76cal)

Or i have started to snack on very low calorie cereals such as Shreddies or Special K.. just take a tub of the stuff to uni with me and i can snack on it all day.

While it is fine.. the only problem is that im finding myself getting very bored of them very quickly.. also you have to snack on a few to really feel full, counting up the calories... has anyone found or got any ideas of very low calorie foods that i can take with me in a little tub to uni to snack on??

popcorn

have you looked into microwave popcorn. I get a whole bag for 110 calories. I found cheese popcorn tonight. I got a whole bag for 140 calories, and I love cheese.

Chip

there is a HUGE market out there right now for 100 cal snacks. They have 100 cal packs of chips, cookies, ect.

I love to have a piece of sugar free gum and a tall glass of water :)

problem is all those little bags of chips and munchie things (the processed stuff) all has MSG in it. how about some cut up chunks of melon like honeydew and canteloupe. i cant remember the exact calorie count, but i know a cup chopped up is way under 100 calories. another thing that bothers me is why all these snacks seem to be all carbs.

let me see...

hard boiled egg is a great snack has about 70 calories.
1/2 of english muffin w/tsp of peanut butter is 95 calories.
small banana is 80 calories
1/2 cup raw baby carrots is 25 calories
small plum is 30 calories

I was told that i couldn't snack on fruit because it has hidden sugars..

Maybe i could get away with carrots. Had a very bad week this week.. ive put on weight i bet. :(

Will talk to my counciller about it tomorrow.

thanks

hehe probably.. but i have a tendancy to take the hard way. haha

besides.. ive started.. i got to finish now. :D

How about some carrot and celery sticks dipped in salsa.
Fruit dose have sugar in it but it also has fiber and vitamins.
Have a good week mate

Air popped popcorn is another good munchie with few calories!

You can find some yogurts I think with less sugar in them which is a good one too.

A small amount of a trail mix, or just some nuts is a good source of protein.

Another thing is, if you have "snack foods" that go over your allotted 100 calories or what not, try breaking that amount you'd normally have in half, and only packing that for lunch or a snack at work. All that you bring is all youcan have, at least that's my rule! So good luck!!

i think i need to start having that rule again... that i can only eat what i bring to uni myself. Im surrounded by food around here.. its so easy to fall off track and eat something naughty. :(

I second that! The students union at my university is retardedly obsessed with not letting any big-name chains on campus, but they have absolutely no problem with filling the food courts with pizza, chinese food, and all manners of high calorie menus. there are a couple healthfood places but they're either unbelievably expensive or disgusting.

*nods* We have really nice soups and things at our union.. but they are right next to where the cookies and all the other stuff is. Basically i can't go to the counter because i end up buying things that i shouldn't. haha

Low Cal Treats

Hey, I'm on a diet right now and I love to snack as well but I'm making sure i stay under 1700 calories a day (Daily calorie intake is not the same for everyone you can calculate yours by looking it up on google.)

Anyways basically i write down the calories in all the snacks and meals i eat. if i snack more than i intended, i cut back the calories at supper. it may sound like a pain and i thought it would be but its actually pretty cool, at least i think and it gives me something to do and feel good about.

anyways i find i can eat more (due to fewer calories) when i snack on regular rice cakes (they are awesome!), 100 cal snacks (however don't take advantage of how low cal they are and eat a whole bunch.) Oatmeal (i use quakers weight control, it helps you feel fuller but no lower in calories than ordinary oatmeal. Kiwi's are extremely nutritious, and about 40 calories each, plus they taste fantastic. Watermelon also is supposed to be really low calorie.

an ENTIRE thin of cucumber is 35 calories all together, so some chopped up cucumber would be hardly anything. Celery is awesome if you like it because it has negative calories. this is because an 8 inch stalk of celery has about 6 calories, but your body takes more energy than that to digest it because of it's contents (i think its the cellulose). so u can basically eat alot of that stuff without feeling guilty but make sure u get enough calories in a day for your health. it tastes really nice dipped in salsa. I've heard something about strawberries having negative calories as well but im not 100 % sure. they definately are low in calories though.

oh and about fruits having carbs. yes, they do however carbs, protiens and fats are what make up calories. calories are wat u need to watch so u dont gain weight. however, for health reasons fats, protiens and carbs should be balanced according to the recommended daily intake of each. dont eat a full days worth of calories by snacking on sugar and juice because u wont get any fats and protiens which are important. protien does make u gain muscle, if you burn it but if its not put to use it turn into excess weight as well. but dont feel gulty about eating fruits. u can search their calories up online to make sure u dont go overboard. but fruits r filled with nutrients and make great snacks as long as they are controlled.

Although I work as an Engineer, I work for the biggest food manufacturer for the UK. A few years ago you would have been shocked by the ammount of salt, sugar (glucose) and other no so good things in our products. The company is going through a big change and the can see the potential market in producing more healthier items for sale. For instance we own and produce things such as Quorn which is a meat substitute made out of mushrooms and sells very very well. This is the way foward for all of our companies and expect a lot more items to come out in the future.

Good snacks are nuts (no salt, sugar etc) and some fruits (for ex:). Overweight people think about food and snacks in a messed up way. "Like I'am so friggin bored and hungry, eating a bag of popcorn really seems like a good idea." Been there done that. Not a good idea. Avoid getting hungry, and eat healthy snacks in modereation when you get the crazy cravings. My tip on eating healthy snacks:

Everything in moderation.

Hi, Yes I have many suggestions:

Low fat string cheese, carrot sticks, small slices of chocolate, frozen fruit, fage yogurt, 1 serving of chips with salsa, Z-bars.. I can go on and on. I actually work on a blog with a friend on this very topic (the blog suggests yummy health diet foods - so no high fructose corn syrup and no hydrogenated ingredients) which you can check out if you like (see my profile).

Hope this was helpful!

I eat a lot of low fat sugar replaced yoguerts. 1kg is about 500 calories (usually i would only eat 1/4 of that as lunch or breakfast, or even as a snack - its a huge amount of food for low calories).
Popcorn like the other say, though i do tend to stick to a lot of steamed veg and play with herbs and spices to make them taste diffeerent. Garlic salt being one of my favs.

Diet foods are crap - they just make you think about food MORE, making you more hungry, so you eat more of the diet food.

I suggest eating healthy REGULAR food in moderation. It will leave you more satisfied. A study recently (sorry I cant quote my source) showed that those who ate the non-diet alternative (like regular yoghurt) actually ate LESS throughout the day than those who ate the reduced sugar/fat/calorie alternatives.

Personally, I would prefer to eat a small portion of the good stuff, rather than eat up diet crap food that has no taste and has so many fake sugars in it! The sweetners leave you craving carbs, which makes you eat more during the day.

Ice lollies!

Something I do now, (which I'm not proud of..) is freeze diet cherry coke in those little ice lolly mold things. Then in the evening, if i'm bored or fancy a sweet snack i'll whip one out of the freezer and nibble on it. It's like one calorie per lolly and because it's frozen it takes ages to eat. Obviously not something to snack on if you're actually hungry (it would do nothing to stave off hunger pains..) but it's a good alternative to sugar free gum and adds a bit of variety to a diet. I only do it cos I like to snack in the evenings, even if I'm full. Totally gross habit haha. I feel really guilty suggesting diet drinks, I know they're packed full of terrible things. My dad is a Doctor and is DISGUSTED that I drink sugar free stuff, but whatever, needs must..:) Hope that helps.
