Rant about another forum!!!

I spend time on a fashion advice forum. I used to spend all of my forum time there until I found this one. It wasn't until I found this forum that I realized that everyone there is very negative. I'm so frustrated with these people now. Most of the people there are overweight women looking for fashion advice. They make so many snide remarks about thin women and it's driving me mad. They claim that size 2s (that's me) are anorexics and hate their bodies, and that It's okay to be a size 28 as long as you love and accept your body. I tried to tell them that being a size 28 and accepting it is not "loving your body". Loving your body means taking care of it. They claim that they are genetically predisposed to being overweight and that they cannot and should not do anything about it. They think that it's okay to be obese if you love your body. What kind of attitude is that? I just don't know how to deal with them. I like you fitness people better.

So, that was my rant. I just had to get it out.

yea i i understand what you mean
it annoys me when people try to make excuses for their obesity

On some other forums one has to have some "Thick Skin". Not all forums have the integrity this one strives for, and I support with my entire heart.

I got it. And I basically got banished from the other forum I was talking about it. I got a pretty harsh response from everyone there. I like this community better, it's much more positive.

I'd rather not say. :( sorry

I want to protect the privacy of some of the members there. I'll just tell you it's a fashion advice forum, but often times topics about clothing size/body weight come up.

Things like that are a very sensitive issue, that's for sure. Most overweight and obese people can be very defensive about it. It's always hard to accept blame for anything, even something as obvious as your own weight.

I've never been obese, but I've been overweight before. Even knowing what I know, it is still quite easy to develop a resentment of very skinny women, much of it stemmed from jealously, admittedly.

Most overweight people do not see their habits as all that bad. Many truly believe that they don't eat that much, or that bad, and that they do get a decent amount of activity. For the most part, this just isn't true - there isn't some underlying genetic issue that just won't let their bodies lose weight, or some disease, or condition....it's their habits that do it.

I recently read that a certain percentage (can't remember) of obese people believe they are within a "normal" weight. (obese people, not overweight) So, denial of why you are where you are, or even denial about where you are at all - is a very strong and real thing.

So, while they may be very negative, and you make a very good point - if you loved your body, you'd take care of it - try and understand that they may truly believe it isn't their fault, or isn't that bad, and saying so feels like an attack.

My dad is 6' and hit 250 lb this year. He's gaining about 5lb a year, so it's going in the wrong direction. He thinks he's in really good health, because he swims every day, doesn't drink and don't smoke. I'm pretty sure he thinks he's actually pretty hot, he'll say stuff like he's really firm because he exercises, and he's always commenting on other people's weight problems.

He's just completely delusional. The fact is he has over 35% BF if not 40, he's already getting short of breath from just a single flight of stairs. He has this idea he can't lose weight, can't stick to a diet, but he's on the same route his dad took - when he got close to 300lb he started having trouble walking, he could hardly get up from the couch, he always gets people to help him if possible. It won't get any easier for my dad to go on a diet in 10 years than it is now, and he will have to do it if he doesn't want to get confined to his home, not to mention his general health. But he doesn't even acknowledge that it's getting worse, despite the fact that 6 years ago, he was 30lb lighter.

It's just really sad that people deceive themselves like that.

On a bicycling forum that I used to belong to I mentioned that I disagreed with the conventional wisdom of most cyclists that the perfect body for a man has 9" biceps, a 34" chest and 36" thighs. I said that if you a Tour De France rider or someone who makes his living bicycling, yeah, I could go along with that. For the other 99.9999999% of cyclists, a complete body like that of a middleweight boxer would serve most people better.

Man, did I get reamed out. Some even questioned my sexual preference! Unfriggingbelievable! I left that forum, not because I was intimidated, but because I didn't like the people there, or at least some of the people there, and choose to spend my limited cyber time elsewhere.

Those bf levels of 35%++ are close to - if not at/over - obesity levels.

curious - what does your dad's doctor say about his current condition ?

+1

Some ongoing threads on this forum are ' textbook cases ' of that IMO.

I couldn't agree more.

Couldn't agree more IMO. +3 oh, sorry lets make that +4 (your base dilusion makes your eye dilusional) So I assist to the contrary :)

I've pretty much gotten over the whole thing now. I haven't even looked on the other forum in quite a while. I don't think I will. I don't want to feed off of their negativity. Yes, I can definitely understand that a lot of obese people are in denial, and all of the controversy around these super thin fashion models gives them a platform to work off of. They think they're fine because they accept their bodies "the way they are" and don't worry about being thin to fit the media image. I personally think it's a pretty lame excuse. Some overweight celebrities are now advocating the new "love your body the way it is" campaign. I agree with the "love your body" part, but the part that fights the idea of weight loss is silly.

I agree that over weight people try to make up excuses and are in denial. When i was over weight i was in complete denial. I believed the foods i was eating weren't bad at all, and i believed i was getting significant exercise. I thought i wasn't fat at all and just a little chubby, i was self delusion and making up excuses why i'm not skinny ( slow metabolism, baby fat, etc )

Thank God I got my act together. Went from 186 to 142/143.

I dont know if you guys will agree with me on this, but i believe fat people need to be made fun of and picked on. It is not okay to be over weight, they need to be encouraged one way or another to lose weight. They need to be made fun of to the point where they end up feeling so depressed and guilty they change their life style. If it wasn't for other people always joking around about my weight, even playfully, i don't think i could have lost the weight because that was my main source of motivation was thinking of all the people that made those jokes.

Overweight people should not be accepted into regular society. Obesity is a disease. Being fat is both a physical and mental illness.

Congratulations on the weight loss even if it took you a while to figure out you were overweight. I was just doing some reading. Does anyone remember the controversy that broke out over the last "American Idol" winner, Jordin Sparks? Well, she was overweight, but still very pretty, and one lady, an obesity expert, publicly stated that she was the "vision of unhealth". She took all sorts of heat form Jordin's fans and people started calling the obesity expert anorexic because she was thin and fit. We really do need to get rid of these excuses for being fat like being "curvy" and beautiful. It only reinforces the problem that we have. For some reason the whole anorexia thing is this "huge" problem that we have to fight, while the obesity problem, (the one that is killing more people), is too touchy a subject. It's okay to criticize people for having a psychological disorder that causes them to see their body as fat, but it's not okay to criticize those that choose to overeat. We need to face it. Obesity is a bigger problem than anorexia. (No pun intended)

This makes no sense.

In one statement you say fat should be made fun of then the next you say obesity is a disease......
