I made a yummy protein shake last night at home. 1/2 cup strawberries, 1 cup light soy milk, 1 scoop of whey protein powder.

it was wonderful! ( surprisingly). had it for dinner... good stuff! My concern is, the guy at work was like... uh... u trying to get huge or something?... thats what i drank to bulk up....

its not creatin though... just 26g protein per scoop.... is that too much? is this good for me? Heard protein speeds up metabolisim... and its with soy milk which has protein as well.
I am NOT looking to BULK up... i want to LOSE WEIGHT... thats what i have been exercising for and eating healthier.....

THOUGHTS ON THIS????

Just simply drinking a protein shake will not make you sprout muscles =)

It's fine, obviously what you put on your shake was healthy, (Though i'm not much of a fan of soy) nothing wrong with eating protein lots if you're trying to lose weight,

Plus, they're convenient, and usually are quite filling so they can count as one of your meals without having to worry about other random things like "Did I measure that correctly? hmmm"

Although, Be careful of what's in your protein powder, make sure there's no toxic artificial sweeteners in there and such, because having a shake a day and with that bad stuff in it can add up ^^;

hehe good info. The kind of protein powder i have is EAS 100% Whey Protein. It contains 23 g protein per server, 1g sugar.

sound alright?

I wouldn't worry - if you're eating fewer calories than you burn, you'll lose weight. Weight lifters drink protein shakes to 'bulk up' - but they're also eating a lot more calories than you are. Protein is good for building and maintaining muscle - bodybuilders want more muscle, and you probably want to lose fat rather than muscle, so it still works :D

How many calories is in the protein powder?

Also I found that when I first starting having those, I would gain weight because I would think of it as another drink. But really, it is a meal replacement so you don't have to eat anything else, it will keep you full. That's why I gained.

Looked up the powder on bodybuilding.com, is it flavoured? Looks like the flavoured versions have Sucralose in them, I try to get my protein powders that aren't artificially flavoured and just add in a bunch of fruit to replace the taste, although when it comes to just drinking it with water... It's like drinking melted chalk:rofl:

I personally use Bioplex, Optimum Nutrition is a good brand too Here's an article on if you want to read

Hi, you aren't going to bulk up using 1 protein shake. If your goal is weight loss, you should lift weights to build muscle. More muscle= faster metabolism. This is because your muscles contain the most mitochondria in them than any other tissue in your body (mitochondria are energy production centers) the more you have, the faster your metabolism. Don't worry, chances of you looking like a body builder are 1 in a million. If you are just lifting and drinking 1-2 smoothies a day you will look great, firm up and lose weight!

FTW!

Its all about the calories... as long as you keep in a deficit you're gold. Shakes are an easy way to get your protein requirements, and also an easy way to add calories easily. just be careful with the extra calories

Protien shakes are def good for you!! i have 3 a day!! there about 400-500 calories each! but they help burn fat fast

i drink them too, and have had people tell me that protein shakes are for bulking up! But its not lol..

Try this one
eggnogg shake

ice
whey vanilla powder
skim milk (or your soy)
rum extract
nutmeg!

taste REALLY good!

IF you want diff flavours just add extracts! like coconut and pineapple chunks for pina colada! :D

Protein shakes don't make you bulk up, they won't burn fat. They are just shake with lots of protein.

I make mine with banana/mixed berries/milk (sometimes soy, but I'm back on non-fat milk -- I go back and forth) and vanilla milkshake whey protein. It actually tastes good. No chalky taste. Better than the chocolate or vanilla. I haven't tried the plain yet. I just get whats cheapest on amazon, but will try to get vanilla milk-shake first if plain is not available (which it has not been -- for free shipping I mean in the brand I like).

Its a good meal replacement and great after strength training.

Yes it will help you bulk up, With Training. if you take it without working out you wont bulk up. My shakes

6-7 strawberry's
1 large banana
2 scoops protein - 50-60g Protein
10 Ice cubs
Half Cup Milk

I Look forward to having them :)

And yes it does help you burn fat too, This is why

Protein elevates your metabolism.

Protein is harder for your body to digest than fat or carbohydrates. It requires more energy for your body to digest protein. Therefore, you burn more calories with protein.

This means that if two people eat 2000 calories per day, the one with a higher protein intake will have a higher metabolism.

Protein helps suppress your appetite. This causes you to eat less calories overall, which contributes to weight loss. Because of protein's ability to help maintain muscle, you should burn fat at a faster rate than muscle."

Yup. So, a protein shake will not cause you to bulk up. Protein is used by the body in making lots of stuff, so when you want to bulk up and are strength training you need protein to do it. Which was not what the OP was asking.

Adequate protein is critical to maintain LBM. Thats why its important for someone dieting. Not because its going to increase your metabolism enough to show a significant difference (which I really doubt anyone is going to notice).

uhm whatz up

I dont know if its good for you but I'm definitely going to try this one that was suggsted in an earlier post here on this thread:

6-7 strawberry's
1 large banana
2 scoops protein - 50-60g Protein
10 Ice cubs
Half Cup Milk

Sounds delish.

It's so difficult to bulk up. Especially for women. Don't worry. 2 of my 6 meals every day are a protein shake with over 20 grams of protein per shot, and I don't look bulky and muscular at all. I wish!

Drinking protein shakes while lifting weights will NOT make you bulk up. Good grief! :)

It's not that easy to bulk up and you certainly can't build muscle while in a calorie deficit.

Drinking a protein shake and lifting weights will help you maintain the muscle that you have while you're losing fat. In fact it'll help you lose MORE fat because you're not losing as much muscle.

You have to work your ass off to bulk - and women have to work even harder than men to do it because women don't have enough testosterone to build the same kind of muscle bulk that men can.
