Sounds like a sweet setup, Cynic. I'd love to get my some mats and bumper plates. Where are you getting your mats?

There's two possible options:

1. 2 4'x8' mats at a local dealer for about $100.
2. These from Sport's Authority: .

I'm partial to #2 because of the thickness and the sectional nature, but it will be > $100 more for them.

I had priced these mats from Dunham's and it was a whopping $450 or so due to shipping cost.

Cynic,
I have a contract that the $9.95 fee monthly will never increase. The 199.00 is a one-time fee that would be lost if I quit. Don't plan on quitting, it's right in my neigborhood. :)

Let's see, how are you gonna do regular back squats? (not front squats) How about dumbbell work? If you know a cheap set of dumbbells, up to 100 lbs or so, let me know. What about parallel bar dips?

A basic bench and barbell, and weights of course, are ok for a short time, but not a full time thing. Yeah you could make a squat rack, but the dumbbell stuff doesn't fly.

Work up to doing one legged pistols, when you can do 5 start holding a weight like a kettle bell or such. I see all these guys who want to squat 400 lbs when they can't even master their own weight first I don't get it.

Or if you must, you can buy an oly weight set and squat rack for less than the average gym membership for one year and then it's yours but you don't have to.

You can buy dumbells for less than a gym membership just look in the want ads .
There are DB handles that accomodate oly plates as well so if you have plates, you don't need DBs

You can get a used pull up staion with dip handles for little or no money or these work great

There is no reason to join a gym to get fit.

One legged pistols are nuts! I can barely squat a$$ to floor with my own weight. I'm hoping to gradually add weight but that's hard enough!

btw I pay $11 now, originally it was $35 for two years

Ok, I hit Sports Authority (retail) and picked up some mats as an underlayer. They come in a 4-pk with removable edges, to make them expandable. At $19.99/pk, I bought four.

I got one part of a shipment of heavier mats I'll use as the top layer. They're heavy as hell. A box of three weighed > 60lbs and the UPS driver looked like a suffering bastard carrying them to my door.

Sunday, I should be able to completely setup my basement gym.
