Sport Pre-workout meal?

Sport Fitness
Ok, I know it may sound crazy weird, but before a week ago I had NEVER tried oatmeal. I tried eating it for my preworkout meal and almost vomited, the consistency got me. It was awful, and I physically cannot eat it. What else can I subsitute? I love bananas, and have heard thats good to eat, but what can I sub in for that oatmeal? Whole wheat bread?

I personally love oatmeal, eating a bowl as I write this, in fact! If you mix in other things with it like protein powder, fruit, nuts, etc. it tastes much better. If you don't like the consistency, you could try dumping dry oatmeal into your protein shake and mixing it up in a blender. It'll make the shake creamier and shouldn't have a consistency problem.

this might sound gross too but I do my best workouts with vanilla protein powder mixed into natural applesauce. Its light, but packs a punch of energy.

What you described can change a great deal under different brands and cooking methods.

That is soooo true try steel cut oats there different form rolled oats.
Steel cut oats are basicly the whole oat just "choped up"
the only down side is they take about 10min instead of 2:eek2:

I get Sturms organic maple spice oat meal from Walmart. It has much less of a geewy consitancy and now I have a hard time eating anything else

Like I said, I'm new to oatmeal. I'd never had it before. What kind of brands are recommended? Are there any cereals that would do the same job? Or what about the oatmeal breakfast bars that claim to have the same nutrion as a bowl of oatmeal? Is that legit, or are they unhealthy?

I think tonight I'll try to whole choco scoop of protein shake in my nasty ass oatmeal and see what that does. If that doesn't work, is a plain prtein shake good preworkout?

I workout with my brother in law, and he swears by the whole oatmeal deal. Says he can feel a world of difference if he doesn't get the chance to eat it before a workout. basically, I'd like to feel what he's feeling, but need something that I can stomach.

how did you make your oatmeal?
if you just cooked it in water and ate it plain i would imagine anyone not used to it would hate it

i think the way to make it taste the best is cooking it in milk and using some type of butter with sweetener and from there adding other stuff like nuts, fruit, protein powder, vanilla

I actually did. Does milk make a big difference in taste? I'm thinking milk, muscle milk, and oatmeal. Anybody eat their oatmeal like that?

yes milk does make a noticeable difference but that alone may not make you like it
i have always been an oatmeal and cream of wheat fan but even i would hate it without sweetener

That's what I do. I also add a cup of berries to it.

Make sure that you are not getting instant oatmeal, it is chopped finer so it cooks faster and basically turns to "mash."

Whole oats are the best. I do not cook them at all. I keep it pretty thick, not watery. This way you have to chew it like cereal.

Definitely don't do the instant, or flavored, oatmeals. They are mushy and slimy, and aren't as good for you.

I like Quaker Old Fashioned Whole Oats. I cook them with about half the water it calls for- then add a bit of choc protein powder.

They aren't all gooey and slimy when they are whole oats cooked in less water.

That's my issue. I followed the instructions, half cup of oatmeal to one cup of water/milk and it was way too slimy the first time. Last night, I tried it with milk and a scoop of muscle milk. It was MUCH better, but was way soupy. I'll try it with half the milk tonight and see what happens.

To the people who add in some whey protein powder how much do you put in with it and do you put it in AFTER it is finished cooking? I have mine with milk.

I guess I would need to know the oatmeal:powder ratio then...Cheers anybody who answers :D
