Pet peeves in the gym

(guilty of singing, but it's more like 'mouthing' my mouth is moving by no sound comes out)

You know what bothers me? When you see a guy with a nicely built chest, big arms, toned down tummy and no legs! Work out on your legs, man!!

people who drop the weights.. sure some of them are heavy and you want to avoid injury.. but when you do curls with like 40 lbs.. you dont need to slam them down afterwards like you were curling 80's.. Just grinds my gears.

I have multiples too:

1. Dudes who put on WAY too much weight on the bar and then leave it there so I can't use it without asking one of them to please remove it for me.
2. Neighbors on cardio with BAD BO or bad breath.
3. Out of shape trainers. How are these guys hired?

LV I totally peed my pants laughing at yours. :D

The trainers get hired because they are qualified not because of how they look. Well at least thats meant to be how it is. I work with a trainer who is out of shape people dont gravitate towards her like me and the male trainer but shes one of the best damn trainers i have ever met.

So what Im trying to say (not directly to sparrow) to all of you is that If you see someone in the gym thats maybe a bit overweight or not in good shape dont automatically presume that they dont know S*** they may be recoving from an injury or something.

I remember one time when I was working out before I got a job as a trainer and this guy walked in. He hadnt been for a while and one of the regulars at the gym said "gee gary you look like s*** your going to have to work hard to match me now" any way gary just fired up and decked this guy. It turned out garys dad had died the month earlier and it was the first time he had got the guts up to do something for himself again. Gary never came back to the gym and I havnt seen him in a long while. I hope hes ok.

Well that was completely off topic! But im posting it anyway because the first paragraph relates.

this bothers me so much also! but our school gym doesnt even provide towels and spray to clean the equipment...its soo gross! i hate it!

I don't see a big problem here... My current off campus gym, is clean - I wipe after each use since cleaning rags and squirty stuff is available. Most people clean up the cardio machines after they're done, but as far as the weight machines I've never seen anybody (except 3 people in the past 2 months) clean up after themselves.

On the on campus gym, the worker ladies / dudes walk around cleaning machines on a regular basis. Though they do a terrible job because they're students. The thing about it is that I don't really mind a dirty machine, I mean I have boxers + shorts on, so that's like a double layer protection from the elements...

just my 2 cents

Yeah I realize that NBS, and you're right. its still a peeve. its kinda like modeling though. A model might know everything about modeling and walking the catwalk and style but if they don't look the part then you question their credibility. But you're right on your point.

ROT, if you can't set them down in a disciplined manner, you're using too much weight.

I'm pretty lucky with the gyms I go to (two local ones), the people that go there are mostly a bit older, actually a lot of senior citizens doing very light workouts to keep in shape which I find inspiring. Almost everyone brings their own towel and wipes their sweat off the equipment, so no complaints there either.

But what I do find rude is that because I look a bit different from the majority of the gym users (long story) they tend to stare at me while I'm doing my workout. I don't mind people having a look or seeing what I'm doing but when I'm soaked in sweat and puffing to get that last rep done, I'd rather not have all eyes on me...

Other thing that bugs me a bit is when people go talk to someone who's sitting on equipment and then they stay there to have a chat instead of releasing the machine for someone else to use. Especially in gyms where the equipment is limited it's really annoying.

For me, peeves are something that affects me. I don't care what others do with their time and money, but if it adversely affects me, then I get peeved.

I was gathering up plates for squats. The cage didn't have posts, so I had to lay the plates against the cage. I was trying to find 2.5lbs plates and someone came over and helped themselves to the 25 pounders I had just laid down.

You guys see those commercials (you cant miss them, every OTHER commercial) that has like; "ONLY 100 calories!"

Couldn't agree more.

I already said this in another thread with a similar topic but i'll just say it again. I hate it how almost EVERYTHING is "healthy" in some sort of way. Where i live i always see commercials on TV advertising such things as cocoa pops as a "healthy breakfast" for kids because it has (insert pointless nutritional fact here) in it. I even remember an add about 6 months ago that advertised Dominos thin n crispy pizza with the tagline "feel satisfied, not stuffed"...Now of course when the gullible overweight person sees this add he/she is gonna think "well that's true, i'll eat one of these and i can get away with it" - WRONG!....

Reality TV is also another annoying thing. Seeing shows like The biggest loser and celebrity overhaul just makes me roll my eyes at some of the stuff they do. I'm not saying i know more than the various doctors and trainers on these shows (evidenced by great results) but to the average person sitting at home this can be very misleading. I wouldn't mind if they incorporated something in these shows where they have 1 or 2 full episodes skimming over the princplies of training and dieting so that people know WHY they are doing what they are doing.

There's more but i'll just do this one and finish...Advertising ab machines on global shop direct (or whatever it's called) and danoz etc. Advertisers promising to "reduce your waist by 18 inches in 3 hours" (slight exaggeration lol).....Which is just bullcr@p, as all of us here know. BUt yeah they always have two young attractive people doing these commercials. The woman has the typical body that most women dream of - lightly tanned, thin, a bit of definition and VERY HOT. And the guy is always some retard looking dude with a six pack and ripped upper body. Again, the average person is gonna be sitting at home thinking "hey, if he/she can look like that by using using this machine than i can to" WRONG AGAIN! These people have obviously spent YEARS in the gym building up to what they currently have and probably don't even use the product they're advertising.....This was probably a little bit off topic but yeah these are just a few things that annoy me about fitness in general.

I TOTALLY AGREEE, STREAM

i cant believe the media lets them lie about how their "ab gatchet" and how it will target fat loss fromt the stomach and give them that "sexy six pack you've always dreamed of with only 10 minutes a day." Its total bull$#it and they make tons of money from lying to everyone.

no cell phones allowed

I dont notice it as much at my gym now, but my gym at college was filled with girls and guys talking on their phones while they did their cardio. I swear, 45 minutes without your phone at the gym is not going to kill you! It was too funny...

I work out at home now and I am pissed that I don't have bumper plates and rubber mats.

Come on, what's wrong with dropping weight? Sure it's stupid to do a push press and then drop it from the top, but when I am doing seated db press I chamber my arms at my sides and drop them. The momentum sometimes makes it seem like I threw them, when in actuallity I hate the feeling I get when placing them on the floor in my shoulder.

Another thing I like dropping, or atleast perfer dropping is bo rows. When you're done it's just like, "Eh I am tired of bending over..." *drop*. Oh, and deads, but you kind of just ride it to the floor.

Your muscles are going from extreme tension to zero in an instant. It has the potential to cause injury from the snap.

Oooh...I have another one....

What is it with disgustingly thin women doing 1-2 hours of intense cardio? I'm not talking about healthy looking...I'm talking about scary looking. The whole time I'm there I just want to shove a chocolate bar down their throat.

There is this girl in my gym I KNOW she's anorexic, she just has that look, sunken in cheeks, you can see her pelvis from both sides. I swear her legs are thinner than my arms :( I feel bad for her actually.

She's caught me staring at her so many times, the last time she just smiled at me. I felt embarrased so I try not to look at her anymore but I just can't help it. Literally, she's skin and bones... [/off topic]

thats tough...you cant really help her either. what are you going to do? walk up to her and say you look anorexic and i want to help you?:( i feel bad for her too.

she may just be sweat bolemic: you eat something then go workout until you sweat the same weight as the amount of food you just ate. thats even more sad : (

Well then so is setting it on the ground. Speaking from the perspective of dl's and bent over rows. All that tension is gone once it touches the floor.

No, because the eccentric is supposed to be controlled. If you're just letting the muscles go slack and letting the weight drag you down, then you're two times wrong.

I used to do that on squats and did a real number on my back. Now that I remembered a severe back injury almost 30 years ago, I now realize I, above all other considerations, need to control the eccentric.
