Sport Opinions on having a BLOW OUT food day?

Sport Fitness
Very curious what peoples opinions are on having a blow out food day?
Meaning eating whatever you fancy for the day not caring about dieting, healthy eating, etc
Some people think it can help get weight loss going again when you get back to your diet afterwards, and mentally doesnt make you feel so deprived.

What are your thoughts and who admits to having binge days?

I think if you feel you need to have a "blow out" food day or a "cheat" day, your "diet" could use improvement. You shouldn't be restricting yourself such that you are craving any foods.

Personally I think "everything in moderation" is a pretty good motto when it comes to food. If you watch your caloric intake, and don't binge on foods, you should feel satisfied.

I don't have "binge" days, but I also let myself eat what I want to eat, without gorging myself on anything. That means if I intend to eat pizza for dinner, I may only have one slice and I will make sure it falls within my caloric intake for the day.

I think it takes discipline to get to the point where you can do this, but it takes discipline to workout regularly, and take care of your body. If you are serious about it, you will follow thru with your diet.

I'm not about to workout for 1 1/2 hours kicking butt to run out to McDonalds for a Big Mac (with that special sauce...lol eh FF?? :D) ...ew...

A lot of truth to this. You shouldn't deprive yourself so much that you feel the need to completely let go and eat everything you see for an entire day. That being said, some people can handle that with no problem, and if you can, then cheers to you. You probably can't, but there's only one way to find that out.

A cheat meal is a much better option, at least to begin with. The take home message is ultimately MODERATION, MODERATION, MODERATION.

yeah, a lot of weight loss programs encourage a cheat MEAL not a cheat DAY. Having a whole day like that will make weight loss very slow. Also, the meal must still fall within your caloric limit.
And also as ride_on said you must be able to handle it. if having that cheat meal makes you just want to keep eating that food for more than just one meal, then it's probably not the best idea.

But in my experience, if I deprive myself too much, i will only binge on it later.

If you want to have a sustainable healthy / fit / enjoyable life then cheat days are very important. They are something to look forward to and they are a reward.

Something that I have found is that the more you get immersed in your training the more you crave your cheat day but the less you make use of it, i hope that makes sense. I think mentally you are always looking forward to it and your mind plays a slight justification game on you but when you arrive at the cheat day you don't always go as crazy as you think as you don't want to ruin all the good hard work you put in.

A personal trick I use is planning my cheat day. So I say to myself yep I'm gonna have that coffee and muffin in the morning and then I'm gonna have XYZ and a beer in the evening, and when thats done I am gonna have that great ice cream. The reality is I rarely have that last ice cream and sometimes the coffee is enough and I drop the muffin.

My message would be, have your cheat day but plan it and work towards it.

Fab advice thanks for that.

If im honest and its hard to admit to, i think, was never diagnosed or anything, but i think i used to suffer from binge eating disorder, ot was back when i was yo yo dieting and VERY deprived of all carbs, i had this for 5 years and it messed with me mentally more that anything.

Now im on ww i dont get the urge to binge as much as i can, have anything in moderation and a lot of the cravings have gone away, but days when im down, stuck at home for work reasons (i work from home) weigh myself to see disappointment, i dont want to - but i do, find myself over eating, or crap.

i end up feeling awful, so energy slumped, down and depressed!

today is the morning after and i feel hungover even though i dont drink and dehydrated. i really need to remember this feeling.

Thanks for the advice, i assumed everybody had days like this, and im glad they dont, cos i learn from people with more discipline!

Your last three paragraphs are awesome. You should print them out and learn from them.
I especially like "i really need to remember this feeling."

You will crack it all, just stay focussed and committed.

Thank you - today is a new day, have had a shower, washed my hair, drinking my water, planning an active day feel better already - oh and the scales are now in the loft :action7::action7:

Not true. A cheat day is not at all "necessary." For some, maybe, but I know people who have gone years without that and are doing just fine.

I'm confused as to how/why you consider coffee a cheat also?

I guess its just down to your perception and opinions. Is anyone right or wrong on these things. We cant all agree all the time can we? Ha ha

I consider coffee a cheat as I only have 1 a week and its a nice latee with hazlenut and a muffin. If I had one of those every day I would not be in such good shape would I?

Anyway each to their own. Take it easy

I'm fine, we're just talking here.

It's not really down to perception. I'm just saying that some people get caught up in the idea that having a cheat meal is necessary to lose fat. It's really not. It's a big pyschological factor for most, people, but not everyone. In that sense it can be very helpful. But if you're really talking about the physiological aspect, a cheat isn't the best way to go. Some type of carb up day is usually much better.

I wasn't aware that your coffee had anything in it. That's why I asked. Although unless the hazelnut part is some type of added sugar, a latte is just coffee and milk. Nothing wrong with that either.

agreed its very psychological, for some a good things, for others a complete phsychological blow.

For me, at the time, i think it wont hurt, but the guilt i feel after, and the anger at myself just aint worth it - im not even hungry and the food (ok, the JUNK) NEVER ever tastes good.

The next day im starving, and bloated and to be honest - that might just have been the last ever blow out day of my life!

Yes, see, then it's definitely not for you. If you must, have a cheat meal. Nothing wrong with that, unless it's going to trigger those feelings to overeat, then stay away.

depends on what you crave and eat on that day, and also why you do it.

like the "special sauce" eeeew

Sometimes I think the "cheat meal" is an undermining of ourselves. The "natural desire" to flood your body with crap is not natural at all. It is dis-ease of some sort. I have lots of them.

There is nothing worng with putting yourself thru the ringer for awhile and staying vigilant. Nothing wrong with letting your hair down once in awhile.

BUT- planning a cheat DAY can be sorta dumb. It will disrupt your digestion for two days and everything, depending on what you eat. A whole day is alot of food, I can get me a good 5-6K cals in a whole day of gorging.

A meal is a better idea.

Why not have "relaxed diet" days when the situation calls for it- like vacation, or a wedding, or days that end in "y" LOL!

I think moderation is for the moderate, and that is sorta boring. I don't want that. I like extremes.

This whole "element" is much more tangible when connection to a performance goal is included.
p.s. caloried deficit can always be achieved thru adding extreme exercise sessions too.

Sure man I am not on the defensive dont get me wrong, as you say this is a chat room so good to bounce things around.

You are on the same page totally, a cheat meal/ cheat day is all pshycological.

And yep you got it the haz;enut is ful of sugar but gee it tastes great.

And even better tomorrow is the day I have my coffee.

see, It's not that I'm depriving myself of the "pleasure" of this "other stuff" it's that my body couldn't handle it even if I put it in my mouth! it would totally reject it! no lie, I did it a long time ago, and it can't take the large amounts of crap. Just can't.

I don't miss it either. I eat what I want, and my body is happy :D

I can see how people would want a "Cheat" meal or item, but I think your body adjust to not having it either if you just don't......

and I think "innerfight" and "ride on" should get a room already! :love2:

ho9w cool is it to actually find an appropriate use for that offensive disgusting smiley!!!!! good day all around... alert the media~!
