okay here's today's laugh....

Hey Chillen thanks for asking about me!! I have been busy - off on a 3 week motorcycle trip to the northwest. Now back to business at the gym. I think I have decided to check into FiTour certification. Anyone know anything about it? I really don't think I can handle anything too technical (brain cells begin to die at a certain age and I think I am there..) and this program seems relatively easy and thorough. Also can do it online and it has a DVD to go back and review when I need to.

I think a lot of people would be more comfortable with a trainer their own age rather than a 20 something. You could show by example that they can still do it.

I think people put too much emphasis on age. The reason people tend to get heavier and more out of shape as they age is because now they've been lazy and eaten crap for 50 years instead of just 20 years

I think a lot of people get confused on this from watching professional sports. Somewhere in their mid 30's you see superstars starting to fade and retire. At this age at the top, elite level of athletics, you lose just enough reaction time and reflexes to make you possibly out of your league....But in the real world, in our daily lives and in recreational sports, you probably won't even notice a difference at all if you stay in shape.

Sure, Mike Tyson is around 40 now and not competitive among the elite pro heavyweight boxers, but fill a room with all the 25 year olds you know and he would whip the shiat out of all of them without breaking a sweat

I guess its all personal preference really. Most of my clients are 40+ and im 20 and they have no issues with it otherwise they would of taken it up with the manager. I dont think ages matters to much as long as you have the knowledge and get them were they want to be.

:newbie: From Australia, studying Exercise and Sports Science. HI!

(what i would really like to get rid of on my body is the little pouch of fat on my lower abdomen. and i know that will take mostly diet. i already do about 70 situps a day.)

If doing 70 situps a day is not advancing you towards your goal then try something else. To keep doing the same thing and expecting different results is a little shortsighted!

You are corect that diet is the major factor in body fat reduction, however there are a couple of problems with your "i already do about 70 situps a day" statement:
1. abs are like any other muscle and should be rested 48 hours between exercise sessions for best results.
2. high intensity often produces better results than high volume. Try some other variations that only allow you to do 12-15 repetitions per set, and you only need 2-3 sets (24-45 total repetitions). Variations could be: incline situps, weighted situps, bicycles, etc.
3. try other movements, like leg raises, hanging leg raises, heavy deadlifts, good mornings, squats, etc.
4. and, of course, in general, you can't spot reduce, so you will have to reduce your overall body fat level to see results in any place.

Yeah that's true particularly as the customer has to pay and he/she doesn't wasn't a snotty trainer. Not all young trainers are bad but its just a perception.

I am female, 54, 5'4", 116 lbs. I have been working at a women's gym for the last 3 years. I LOVE exercising and fitness (altho I do love junk food too) - have always been in decent shape even after two children. I am very active and love all outdoor sports (this year I am giving up waterskiing though. Don't want to fall and break something.) Lately I have been considering trying to get some type of personal training certificate - mostly for my own information but perhaps to make a little money also. Am I too old??????????????????? Would anyone hire a middle aged woman?

There are plenty of fitness clubs out there that would like to hire someone like you, especially because a fit middle-aged woman can be a great motivator for other middle-aged women.

I recommend that you look into training certifications from either ACSM, NSCA, or NASM if you are serious about working as a trainer. Also, if you are looking to work at a specific establishment, I recommend looking into their requirements (like Lifetime Fitness requiring a NASM cert).
