Sounds more like interval
Hi there.. jamming in about HIIT. I'm doing 20min HIIT but it seems that I've had no side-effect other than fasting heartbeats. Just wondering that is it common that your inside have to have a "turn about" in the first few rounds? And then again I may not be doing it right.
What I do is: On scale of 10
Start with 2min of 5 follow by
6, 7, 8, 9 then 6, 7, 8, 9 and 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 5.
Do you slow down in between or are u mostly on the max of the scale?
From my questionable knowledge of the proper HIIT workout it would seem you are not doing it.
If 10 is the absolute maximum you can run, a proper HIIT (based on your above time intervals) workout should look more like this.
2 minutes on 5 (though really I would warm up for 4 minutes or more)
then 10 for 1 minute (sprinting like hell!)
back to 5 for 1 or 2 minutes (recovery)
then 10 for 1 minute (sprinting again!)
back to 5 for 1 or 2 minutes (recovery)
etc
etc
Until cool down of 2 minutes
From what I have read and heard proper HIIT is not about ramping your way up and down. It is about going 100%, balls to the wall exertion, then recovery, then 100% again, recovery, etc. 6 then 7 then 8 is more attuned to an interval workout not HIIT.
For myself I notice the difference totally in my HIIT routines now. I am breathing sooo hard it is like I am struggling to pull enough oxygen into my lungs, and I couldnt even consider going past 12 minutes (6 of which being warm up and cool down) and I am only doing 30 second intervals of HIIT.
Most important thing is to do what your body thinks is best. But true HIIT is trickier than I first thought. But after 12 of the hardest minutes of my day, I feel like a million bucks....
