Hi WLF, this is the first time I've ever posted / been on a weight loss forum! I've had so many failed diets in the past so thought this could be something to keep me motivated if I could post my successes (or failures).

This is potentially the worst time of year to go on a diet - what with all the Christmas selection boxes still hanging around, but I've never made a New Years resolution and I'm fed up with being fat so I may aswell give it a go.

I've struggled with my weight since I was around ten so it would be really great if anyone had any tips on how to change life long habits! I spend way too much time watching TV aswell so that's something I'd also like to change.

Anyway, just thought I would say a Hello and Happy New Year to everyone for tomorrow - when the diet really begins!

Welcome to the forum :)

Welcome :)

You're not alone in failing previously... but stick around and you won't be alone when you succeed either

Google suggests between 21 and 66 days to form a new habit, so by March you'll be a new person guaranteed :D

Do whatever you need to do I reckon, for example I knew I wouldn't be able to resist eating the chocolate I was given for Christmas, so I gave it all away at the earliest opportunity. No chocolate = no temptation. If I'm feeling bored, I go and do some exercise - otherwise I know I'll end up in front of the TV. I've just tried to make little changes like that and (so far) it's working... this time lol.

Expect a lot of yourself, but don't expect perfection. If something goes wrong one day don't worry, you're not perfect. But do make yourself get right back on it asap :)

Hi Rachel and welcome to the diaries! The important stuff has been said already so I´m just going to wish you all the best and cheer you on from the side :)

Hi Rachel & welcome to the forum. It's 2018 here already. A new start for all of us. Stan has given you the basics already. Believe in yourself, be kind to yourself & with some support from people who have your best interests at heart, you will do this. Let's go!

Welcome :)

Thank you for the advice :) I definitely need to give my chocolate away too! It's too tempting

I'm struggling today - how's everyone else doing? Back in the office and there's a box of after eights, box of quality streets and a big bag of Cadbury caramel mini bites - lovely presents from the management - but it's really making me struggle! And these are just mine by the way, everyone in the office got the same - if it was between us it would be much easier to resist. Think I'm going to put them away when I get home and maybe have one chocolate per night as a treat with my low calorie hot chocolate.

Anyway, happy new year guys!

We all know that struggle, haha. You can do it. Keep up your goals no matter how you're feeling today. Even if you slip up, don't count it as a loss. Just count it as a neutral. That's what I'm doing! Happy New Year!

PS hot chocolate is da bomb diggity shiz

Thanks! I feel a bit better now I've put them away in the drawer and they're not sat infront of me! Going to walk home from work tonight instead of getting the bus home, was going to get the bus and then go on the exercise bike but I don't think I would! So walking home for an hour instead seems more likely (and less time to have to resist laying on the coach eating all the chocolates I got)

You're a better person than me. Walking from work takes some real guts. Great job with the snacks too! Personally, I know myself too well in that if I have junk food at the house, I'll eat it. I do sneak my roommate's junk food sometimes though lol. Keep up the great work!

Well done removing the temptation from your sight. Walking home is wonderful (given the right environment) and can really help you relax after a hard day.

I'm the same, I'd just cleared out all of the junk food too :(

Thank you, Let' hope it's not raining like it usually is in Manchester haha

Does anybody have any advice for what I could eat differently but still feel full? I.e. Some healthy but bulky snacks to fill me up... I've had porridge for breakfast, a ham sandwich on brown bread for lunch and a yogurt, and casserole lean beef with a small jacket potato for dinner and I'm feeling quite hungry still

I also did a hour walk home from work (which is quite bad since it was only 3 miles)

We learned that 5km/h is average walking pace and 3 miles is 4.8 km, so... nothing to be ashamed of! Well done sticking to your plan.
Porridge wouldn´t be enough for me, personally, unless I chucked in some nuts or something for fat and protein. That ham sandwich could use some raw veggies to make it more interesting and a bit more substantive. And the casserole... hard to say as I don´t know what you put into it but veggies and beans usually help. In general I use veggies or soups to add bulk, fat to feel satiated quickly and protein to stay full for a long time.

That's ok; when you start out it's all about the distance and getting it done I think. Once you get more used to it, that it is the time to think about quickening up a bit (or even taking detours to make the distance longer or more hilly) :)

Thank you :) I do need to start eating more fruit and veg, I actually like them just in a bad habit of not buying them... usually because I don't last more than a day on a diet and end up throwing everything outa week later :(

Today was okay, date night but I made some 'improved choices', normally I have a gigantic burger, fries, coleslaw, Mayo on the side, two full fat cokes, and chocolate fudge cake for dessert, potentially with another sugary drink at the cinema. Instead I had a smaller burger and fries, no side of coleslaw, swapped to ketchup instead of mayo, Diet Coke and shared a dessert.

Also walked into town from work instead of getting the bus which helped me reach 15,000 steps for today!
