New to this!

Hey, thanks for the messages of encouragement! Sadly iv not had a good weigh in this week as iv put on a pound but considering how ill I felt last week and the things i ate (They are unthinkable during a diet change haha :p)I think I got off lightly! So, new day so new start and I went to go speak to my dietition but he said despite me being in the cal barrier (1500 cal) im consuming too many carbs and im not varying it. I can understand that im eating too much bread, I snack on it and I have it for breakfast so I know this is something I need and will change but im confused why varying my carbs would alter how fast they are broken down? Dietitian didn't seem to make sense just said I should swap my 2 slices of toast for weetabix yet they fell under 'carbs' so unsure how this would make a huge difference.

Im glad you have managed to achieve so much success RedUK, what is your general meal plan? Im curious as I may just mimic what works for you see if it makes a difference for me :)

Its going to be odd reducing my carb intake because it doesn't feel like a meal unless it has carbs in it, i know that sounds weird but yeah haha.
What foods are low in carbs? I feel like I need reeducating haha :)

Sure, my typical day would be 2 Weetabix with semi skimmed milk for breakfast. Then a tangerine around 11ish when I get hungry but too early for lunch. Then for lunch I take a home made salad to work. This would be some kind of meat or fish (chicken, salmon) cooked the night before with lettuce, tomato, sweetcorn, carrot, onions, peppers etc. Then sometimes a banana in the afternoon. For dinner I go for meat or fish again with lots of veg (broccoli, peas, carrots etc). I have stopped eating bread altogether but you don't need to. If you cannot give it up altogether, just make sure it's in moderation. For example, I wouldn't have more than two slices of wholemeal per day.

As far as carbs go...I do cut them out most days. However, probably 3 or 4 days per week I still have them. Rice with meat and veg, or potatoes with meat and veg isn't too harmful. I have realised for me that the less carbs I eat, the more weight I lose. I also have pasta every now and then as sometimes I just need something more filling. Even then, I don't have too much and find it fills me up more than before due to the new diet.

As an indicator of how carbs affect my diet - I ate carbs every day one week and only lost 1/2 pound, now I try to cut them out and lose three pounds, so I know for me they are what I need to eat less of.

I hope that helps and makes sense....

Let me know if you have any other questions :)

Okay so I have tried to act upon a mixture of your advice and the dietitions as I feel this would help me work out what I need to do to lose calories. After noticing I was consuming too many carbs I have tried to reduce this as much as possible. I will post what I would usually have, and what I have changed recently.

OLD DIET:

Breakfast -
2-3 slices of toast with butter

Dinner - Cheese sandwich (2 slices of wholemeal bread, tea spoon of mayo and a small amount of cheese)

Tea - 1 cup of broccoli, 1 Piece of chicken breast, 1 cup of carrots, bowl of mash potato (this would be like, a cup full i'd recon, so about 6-7 tablespoons?) and a cup of gravy (Yes, I like gravy haha, would have like 3 spoon fulls of gravy granules) and maybe like half a cup of roasted parsnip + 2 Yorkshire puddings

Drinks: 1-2L of a mixture of water and tea (1% milk, 2 sugars)

NEW DIET:

Breakfast:

125ml of low fat yogurt

Dinner:

3 tablespoons of white rice, 1 teaspoon of mayo, 1 piece of chicken breast and 1 cup of broccoli

Tea:

2 Sausages, 3 spoonfuls of mash, 1 cup of broccoli + half a cup of gravy (1 table spoon of gravy granules)

Drinks:

2L of water + 2-3 cups of teas

I don't tend to snack because I'm usually only awake from 10am-10pm and I feel full after all my meals so I find that this isn't something I need to do, if I was hungry before though I would have a slice of toast but if i was hungry now I would opt for a banana

Hi Abbie

Your new diet sounds great. Also, drinking two litres of water per day is fantastic!

I had a couple of thoughts - is the mayo low fat? As it's surprising how much healthier low fat mayo is compared to normal mayo, and then you don't have to cut it out altogether! Also, do you have butter in the mash, how is it made? Sausages may not be the best meat choice, although again you can get reduced fat sausages that are fine. Do you like fish at all? Having oily fish (salmon, tuna in brine) even just one day a week can be really good for you.

You are doing great and not snacking in between meals is a massive help. Well done :)
