Sport Negative Calorie Foods, myth?

Sport Fitness
So I read online about how some fruit (like apples) are negative calorie foods. as in it takes the body more calories to digest it than the apple gives your body from digestion. true/false?

False. This is a huge myth.

One of the more popular fake negative calorie foods people think work are celery, but nope one big myth.

Rest assured if you digest ONE apple a day........your will UNLOCK the weight loss DOCK around the CLOCK; but dont give this much thought as it is a bunch of CROCK; Tick-Tock lets ROCK (just messen) ;)

While its true you burn some calories in digestion, why are we concerning ourselves with such a minor player in the overall equation scheme of our goals?

If you are curious, yes young man, it is true we do use some calories in digestion.

Yea, it does take energy to digest but he was asking if there are foods out there that take more energy to digest than the calories it was worth, hence you lose weight by "eating" which is a myth

My take is, the lower in calories the less energy it takes to digest the food. A whole meal with chicken, fruits, veggies will take more calories to digest than just eating a apple.

So i stand by what I say, it is impossible to eat food while digesting more calories than the food is worth and lose weight.

Yep. It takes no calories to process water.

If it did, people wouldn't change their diet and just drink more water and lose weight.
Doesn't work this weigh

There is no scientific proof for negative calorie foods.

Show me proof, papers, instead of theoretical assumptions.

You are missing my point. I am not saying this will CAUSE WEIGHT LOSS.

I am saying with all things considered equal......it is POSSIBLE to eat ONE thing......say the lettuce example, and have the digestion process burn more calories then the food item itself.

It is true.

So according to you, I can eat lettuce all day long and fill myself up on it and the digestion process will burn it all off.

Come on now chillen, this is a ridiculous theory without evidence

The Negative Calorie diet – Against:

* No scientific proof to confirm its effectiveness
* Very little information surrounding diet
* More theoretical than practical

The Negative Calorie diet – For:

* Little effort involved
* Promotes consumption of foods rich in vitamins and minerals
* Increases the body’s metabolism

The Negative Calorie diet works on the concept that certain negative calorie foods contain a surplus of vitamins and minerals which can speed up enzyme production in quantities sufficient to break down not only its own calories,

I do agree that it takes energy to break down the food, but I don't believe the energy level required would surpass the calorie amount of the food ( negative calories ) or if you eat a 60 cal apple your body uses 60 cals to digest it.

I've already googled for proof, some people have lost weight using this "fad" diet but I think the reason for this is not the negative calories but because they fill themselves on fruits and veggies to where they are absorbing more vitamins and minerals, and hence being full longer therefore eating less calories and eventually losing weight while they think it is the negative calories that are helping them lose weight when it is really their change from eating junk to more fruits and veggies.

I am going to go train right now, but when I'm done I will try to continue looking into this and see if there is any hard substantial evidence

Did some Googling myself and these are alleged to be " negative calorie foods "....

Here are a few of the foods on this negative calorie foods list.

FRUITS on the negative calorie list

Apples
Blueberry
Cantaloupe
Cranberry
Grape Fruit
Honey Dew Melons
Mango
Oranges
Peaches
Pineapple
Raspberries
Strawberries
Tangerines
Watermelon

VEGETABLES on the negative calorie foods list

Asparagus
Beets
Broccoli
Green Cabbage
Carrot
Cauliflower
Celery
Chili Peppers
Cucumber
Endive
Garden Cress
Garlic
Green Beans
Lettuce
Onion
Radishes
Spinach
Turnips
Zucchini

...so in theory, I guess if the bulk of our diet came from these foods, we'd eventually starve to death. Too funny ! :yelrotflmao:

Personally, I do not think that there is any such thing as a neg calorie food. Closest to it might be chilled water as it contains no calories and calories must be used by the body to heat it up (although, not really a food).

Like Wrangell said, you could gorge yourself constantly on only these foods and you would die.

Ridiculous notion imho

heh, I was thinking exactly the same thing....

I think we all know the reason Chillen deleted his posts.;)
