Hello All,

New to this forum but not new to trying to lose weight!

I’m a 34yr old guy weighing in at 105.7kg at a height of 180cm. I have an office job, wife, 7 month old daughter

Exercise has been pretty much non existent.

I’ve previously been a member of gyms but it’s the usual story, go for a while then don’t go back. I’ve since got dumbbells, kettlebell, barbell and exercise bike for home. I hit the gym a few times a month at the moment!

I can’t seem to find the time to work out, or more likely I can’t be arsed to work out. I’m not entirely sure what I should really be doing, there’s a lot of conflicting info out there.

Diet wise anything goes really, there’s no restrictions of food or drink (alcohol). I really enjoy food and wine/beer. I think Indo a lot of emotional type eating (tired, anxious, stressed, excited)Around 6 years ago I lost over 2 stone using a LCHF Atkins type diet (I was single at the time so was easier) but it’s all come back on!

I have a big spare tyre and belly overhang just now. I’m probably never going to be ‘ripped’ however I’d be delighted to be slender and lose the muffin top.

My struggles are motivation, what to do exercise wise and how the hell I can stop eating/snacking/drinking.

Here I am...

Hey Muzza, excited to see another new parent on here! I have a 6.5 month old! We are a friendly bunch on here, hope you will post regularly!

Hi Sunflower,

It’s not easy!

I’m hoping to get up at 6am to do a 30/40 min work out the shower before heading to work.

Good idea in theory but with being up 2/3 times a night with baby, when 6am comes round the snooze button gets a hammering!

Hi Muzza, Welcome to the forum!
My struggles are motivation, what to do exercise wise and how the hell I can stop eating/snacking/drinking.

You might start with walking here. Maybe build up so you're consistent with it and then go from there. I bet it would help with the cravings too.

Hey Muzza, welcome to the forum!

I think you can find this place very helpful, people here are friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to help and support. This is not a place that advocates any specific diet or approach, although some people here have their favorites. Rather you will get support in finding the best approach for you.

I see you are trying to start exercising, have you thought about what you want to do? Rob's suggestion to start with walking is a good one.

How about a diet, have you chosen something to start? If not what are you thinking?
how the hell I can stop eating/snacking/drinking
No real way except to do it, my suggestion is to stop today, now. To stay stopped find a reasonable eating plan and work to stick to it. If you do that and post your plan and progress here you will get a lot of support. There are people here who can help with that plan, but no reason not to start today. If nothing else start by counting calories and stick to 1,500 a day for a day or so it doesn't matter a lot what you eat, then start figuring out what you can eat that's nutritious and filling.

Alcohol is fine, but only if you count the calories and make sure what you eat is nutritious and well balanced. On the other hand alcohol is wasted calories, not drinking at all, or only on occasion is better. I cut way back on my drinking when I started my diet and it has helped a lot.

Best of luck to you, and I look forward to reading about your progress.

Hi, Muzza! Good to meet you. :)
What everyone's said above is all right on point, so I won't duplicate. One thing, though, with the stopping snacking/drinking - it really helps if the snacks/drinks aren't right in front of you. Even better if you can make it that you don't have chips/peanuts/whatever in the house, but have to get up and make a whole separate trip to the shops to buy the packet of what you want - that can really help cut down, in my experience. If it's not there, I don't eat it!

Thanks all for words of advice so far.

My proposed 6am start was abandoned this morning - baby up all night being sick

Planning to exercise this evening though and will post what a daily ‘health day’ diet looks like tonight.

You will have to figure out when exercise is possible, it may be hard for a while. However since most of weight loss is diet you should still be able to eat right and lose weight. Figuring out the exercise thing will help, but for now you should just do what you can do. And so far it sounds like you are doing right.

Best of luck!

Not sure how this diary should really work but I’ll post my musings when I can.

Breakfast is usually - Skipped, couple of scrambled eggs or toast or all bran. Occasionally I will have a greasy roll but only once a month if that. Sometimes weekends the likes of bacon and sausages could enter the mix, but only sometimes.

Lunch - At work I can go for sandwich/roll, crisps & chocolate.

I try to keep it to chicken & veg or chicken & salad.

Weekends is usually a roll or eat out.

Dinner - Usually kept to one sensible enough meal, there may be a starter before and a desert after, I need to drop these add ons. It’s neither good or bad, dinner is reasonable I’d say.

My daily temptations on top of 3 set meals, of which I usually give in to;

Crisps - Right there are store checkouts

Toast - Easy on the go with lodsa butter/jam/peanut butter

Biscuits - Need to stop buying these.

Chocolate - Again a checkout temptation.

White/Red Wine - I enjoy

Craft type beers - I enjoy

Currently - Xmas Mince Pies

People also bring in a variety of junk into the work kitchen, it sits there and looks at me, it’s hard to resist.

My mindset hasn’t/is definitely not in the right place when it comes to diet.

Hey Muzza, this looks exactly what a diary should look like! Whatever helps you.

A suggestion, I always try to look at the diet one day at a time. It helps me focus, and if I can eat right today all else will take care of itself. Can you do just today without the crisps, loaded toast, beers, etc?

Best of luck to you.

this should not scare you, but it should concern you. your eating schedule isn't unusual, but it is unhealthy. when you eat, especially sugars/ carbohydrates, your blood sugar rises and your body produces insulin in reaction to lower it. forget for now the way insulin works which is to turn that excess into fat, but consider what you're asking of your body. you are overworking your digestive system... in time you will heighten your insulin resistance and diabetes is just around the corner. you are 34. it is not too late to change, but you're getting there.

start from the hours you sleep and if nothing else, try to extend that time of digestive rest. you say you skip breakfast (well, traditional morning breakfast), but this also has to include anything that will raise your blood sugar... aka sugar (in coffe... milk/ cream, just as bad). on the other end, try to stop nighttime snacking... again, this includes anything with calories.

i could suggest your worst snack foods are any with high sugar, next high carbs.... especially combined with low/ no fiber.

i wouldn't dwell on the lack of exercise. i have said it before, exercise is a good adjunct to weight loss... i will not deny that it not only increases calorie burn... it is good at least maintaining or even better, increasing your basal metabolism... and frankly, it typically gets you out and away from the fridge. your diet needs major reworking, though.

I have to disagree with my friend, flyer. A normal 3 meal a day eating schedule is NOT unhealthy. You mentioned there's a lot of conflicting information out there and you're absolutely right. Now's not the time to concern yourself with much of it. I would suggest just keeping things as simple as possible while you adjust and try to change. In the beginning, SLOWLY make improvements that you are certain are healthy, one at a time. It's not rocket science and FYI, this forum is primarily moral support and motivation. It's not the place for expert technical advice although you'll find enthusiasts and if you do some digging, there might be some good information in older posts.

Hey Muzza, how did your first day go?

Don't be surprised by the friendly differences between Flyer and Rob, as I said this place supports people in finding what works best for them individually. Its not going to be the same. Stick around and people here will help you find your way.

As @alligatorob said, it is all about finding what works best for you, There are pros and cons for every diets, and what works well for one person may not be the right approach to somebody else. I am strictly a meat heavy keto person, but that does not mean that I think everybody should eat that way, it just means that is the best way for me. Intermittent Fasting works for many including flyer but again it is not suited to everybody. As Rob points out 3 meals a day works for a lot of people also, some count calories some don't. There is a grain of science in most diets, so those who wish to push an agenda can always dig up some science to back their position.

Having said that, there is a lot of unscrupulous people out there willing to sell the next new secret or quick fix, if the promise is hard to believe then it probably is too good to be true.

If you have exercise questions don't hesitate to ask.

Hi All,

Dragged myself out of bed at 6am this morning for a 10 min warm up cycle followed by 30 mins 'upper' resistance workout.

My last 'meal' of the day usually ends before 8pm. I think it'd be fairly easy for me to skip breakfast, I've done it before on occasion and it hasn't been an issue. This would make my first 'meal' of the day at around 12pm - Lunch - This would give me a 16hr window without eating. I would however be taking on water and coffee (Black, no sugar). As I mentioned previously my weekday lunch is usually chicken with salad or steamed veg so no issues here. Dinner wise we're currently using Gousto which is a meal delivery service, they send you all the raw ingredients for you to cook from scratch. Meals are selectable so I have some control over calories etc. It may look unhealthy but the alternative is to eat our own meals cooked from scratch with no real knowledge of calories etc - Gousto also allows good portion control, which has been another of my issues! At the moment it works for us and is convenient what with dealing with a 7 month old!

I love Gousto. Really good way to manage portion control and know your calories too. I was up three times with my 7 month old last night, too. Knackering!!
