Sport Milk and cereal?

Sport Fitness
Hey guys! I am new here :) I just started working out..going to the gym.. trying to eat healthy and I have done some progress so far :)
However, I was wondering if cereal ( special K or fitness) and milk ( non fat) are healthy for breakfast?
If not what should I have? I am 6 feet tall (185 cm) and I weight about 154 lbs ( previously 190 lb) and I am trying to build up some muscles ( specially a 6 pack )

Thank you in advance :)
PS: I apologize for my bad english

Oatmeal, some fruit and a protein shake is probably the best option, but i eat All Bran Flakes with milk and trail mix (unsalted, ingredients: peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and raisins) added cuz its quick and easy. Usually i have a small whey shake with it.

Protein shakes are genereally good for you. Look for ones with low sugar content.

Cereal for breakfast is a fast and easy thing to do. The issue is that it is high in carbs and spikes your insulin levels from the get go. Adding an egg, peanut butter on toast, or a whey protein shake will keep this spike lower if any spike at all.

Eat early, eat often. More more muscle, eat more protein than carbs, but don't reduce the carbs.

hi - i dont want to hijack this thread, but i have a similar question.

I am on a low fat low cholesterol diet and i have started having porridge for breakfast.
Can you tell me - whats best to have with it - soy milk or skimmed milk ?
It seems that the soy has twice the calories, which is what i want as i am thin and need to increase my good fats intake.
Is it good for my diet to have soy instead of skimmed ?

Cheers

How many pieces of toast with peanut butter on would you recomend? I am going to get some protein shake but cannot afford the best. I will only have 1 day due to my type 1 diabeties I dont want to put extra stress on the kidneys...

I prefer cows milk. Try nuts and fish to add good fats to your diet.

Im scared to tell someone with diabetes anything because im not a doctor. 2 pieces should be good (whole wheat obv), but it depends on what you're gonna eat with it.

and to build off the cereal.. which brand?

I eat All Bran Flakes.

I'd be dead if I listened to what diabetes nutritionists told me. I have always eaten far more protein than most diabetics, and my renal function is fine. 25 years of excessive protein consumption has not fried my kidneys.

Two pieces of toast (depending on what type of bread you're using) contains anywhere from 30-60gm of carbs. Most diabetics don't eat bread because it's a crappy carb.

Just eat the peanut butter straight.

If you're looking for cereals, Kashi some good ones that have fiber and protein so it helps with not spiking your blood sugar. I usually have a few nuts with it, too.

I would go with 2% Milk. It has good fat for you. Soy milk will not lend to lean muscle mass as it will increase estrogen levels.

Why are you on a low cholesterol diet? Not knowing your specific condition, you still need to get natural cholesterol in your diet. Eggs and butter are two commone sources that are actually good for you. If you don't have enough natural cholesterol, your body will take carbs and change them into cholesterol. The problem with this is that with natural cholesterol, your body can turn off the absorbtion of it when there is enough. When your body transforms carbs into cholesterol, it doesn't know when to shut this off and that is when you get too high levels in your system.

Check with your doctor and registered dietician for further details on this, but keep asking questions as a lot of doctors even (who have a lot of info to take in on a daily basis) aren't up to speed on the latest findings.

I dont understand all the fuss about having all these exact types of milk and such. Yer, it may help improve a little bit but...

You only need a big breakfast with plenty of protein and nice and lite at the same time. You don't need to worry about every little thing your going to have on your breakfast like what kind of milk...As long as its not the major thick ones...

That's my honest Opinion anyway...

Heres a post made by Chillen that might help.

Suggestions on various cereals:

1. Steel Cut Oats, Old Fashioned Cut Oats, and Regular Cut Oats (quick cook type), in large containers.

2. Various types of Go Lean Kashi cereals. (Some dont like them, but I dont share this opinion).

3. Fiber-One. (60 calories per 1/2 Cup, and source of fiber)

4. Grape Nuts

GRAPE-NUTS:

Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT FLOUR, WHEAT FLOUR, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR, SALT, DRIED YEAST, SOY LECITHIN. VITAMINS AND MINERALS: REDUCED IRON, NIACINAMIDE, ZINC OXIDE (SOURCE OF ZINC), VITAMIN B6, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMIN MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN B12, VITAMIN D.

Its devoid of any "added in" sugars, and from what I have read on Lecithin, this is used in many bread products for various reasons, and isnt a bad ingredient.

5. Shredded Wheat and Shredded Wheat and Bran: (NOT SUGAR TOPPED)

POST SHREDDED WHEAT ORIGINAL SPOON SIZE

Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT

TO PRESERVE THE NATURAL WHEAT FLAVOR, BHT IS ADDED TO THE PACKAGING MATERIAL--If you dont like perservatives, dont select this one

I love Special K, but it has high fructose corn syrup and most people would be well advised to reduce or entirely eliminate it from their diet.

There are better cereals than Special K. Look for those which are made of whole grain and where sugars are less than 10% of the total carbohydrates. Plain oatmeal is one of the better choices.

Why are you on a low cholesterol diet? Not knowing your specific condition, you still need to get natural cholesterol in your diet. Eggs and butter are two commone sources that are actually good for you.

Milk fat and butter (as well as fats from red meat, coconut oil, and palm oil) are high in saturated fat. Some people believe that saturated fat helps testosterone levels, and that may help increase muscle mass. However, if you are prone to high LDL blood cholesterol, a high intake of saturated fat increases the risk of heart attacks. (But note: partially hydrogenated oils are worse for the blood cholesterol and have no known good health effects, so replacing butter with stick margarine made with partially hydrogenated oils just makes it worse.)

Most people's blood cholesterol is rather insensitive to dietary cholesterol intake, but some people are hyperresponders whose blood LDL cholesterol and heart attack risk increases significantly when consuming dietary cholesterol. I.e. eating eggs is fine for most people, but heart-risky for some. Unfortunately, it is not obvious whether one is a cholesterol hyperresponder, other than getting blood sample cholesterol tests done after eating high and low cholesterol diets where other changes (e.g. types and amounts of fats and carbohydrates) are minimized.

Damn Right! :)

I regularly sit with my 110 pound Chocolate Lab, and we lap one to two servings of peanut butter a piece. And, no matter how much he foams at the mouth, drools, chokes, mouth sticking shut, he begs for more.

He's my Natty Peanut Butter buddy, lol. I have to keep the jar on the high shelf because he learned where I put it on the counter, and one morning he got on his rears and was able to paw it down, and broke the jar on the floor, and was lapping up the mess.....uh...he can open refrigerator and bed room doors too, lol

Peanut Butter FTW! :)

Best wishes

Peanut Butter FTW! :)

But choose peanut butter made without hydrogenated oils or added sugars. Best if the ingredients are only peanuts (and salt if you prefer and do not have issues with salt intake).

Almond and sunflower seed butters are also available if you want some variety. So iare cashew and macadamia nut butters, although those tend to be lower in protein (they are mostly fat, albeit good fat, but if you are trying for more protein, they will not provide much of it).

My god peanut butter is the best thing out there! I could eat this stuff for days straight. Just a spoon, jars of peanut butter and your set for life!..
