Hey guys whats up .. need some advice and info ...

Basically for 2008 my main goal is to loose 80/100pounds, im now at about 275pounds, 6'3". . sounds like a task, but i think i can do it, currently started about 3 weeks ago the quest..

I have cut all fatty foods/sodas/meat/sweets/etc .. im having 3 very light meals per day, mainly bread/muffins/water .. on the weekend i tend to eat a little meat. i walk to and from the bus station, which is about a 45mins walk each way. im doing arm toning with some 5pound dumbells and a 25pound one (i do about 6 sets of 25,, and i try to add five more each week) ...... So far i have not weighed, im thinking i want to see and feel the results in the flesh not on a scale . so far in the 4 weeks i have lost a little as clothes feel better, pants roomier, and my arm muscles are starting to tighten up..

My question , what are the negitives if i keep this up for a year or so ... aslo how long before i will really start to see a diff, is my body gonna adjust and just stop loosing weight ??

Any Info will be appreciated .. thanks

Are you getting enough calories in a day? Three very light meals sounds like it would not be enough. I think there is a sticky-thread around here that talks about going into "starvation" mode where you will not burn because your body thinks it will not have anything to replace it.

try to write more about your diet. As far as muffins try not to eat so much everyday. I want to say avoid it at all, but never deprive yourself from foods you like, it's all about portions and control.

Well, i know for sure i want to cut out meat .... im not really starving i notice now when i eat a little will feel fulling, if i eat like i use to i feel stuffed beyond stuff ..

Ok, so if im not eating i wont loose ?? :nopity:

and when you say smaller portions, u mean like 1/3 of what i use to eat ?

If you want to cut out meat, go for it. I did just a few weeks ago -- but had turkey on Thanksgiving and have a freezer full of venison from my brother. I have been eating beans and tofu instead of chicken and beef. (I honestly like tofu and have been eating it for years.)

Check out the http://weight-loss.fitness.com/nutrition/ section-- especially the sticky posts at the top there.

If you do not have much food coming in, your body is going to think you are starving and save everything it can instead of burning reserves that it knows will be replenished within hours. If you eat what you need, you will be okay and you will burn stored calories.

As for eating one-third of your former portions, that really depends on what you ate. If you used to have three cheeseburgers and bag of chips for a meal, one-third sounds right. If you used to have one big cheeseburger, a bunch of fries, and a pop, maybe try one regular sized bean-burger with a side salad, veggies, or fruit.

The biggest mistake I made in the past few weeks in cutting out meat is not eating enough protein. I would go a few meals without much and get an annoying headache and never feel full. Beans (canned are usually low in additives and salt; or make your own from dried) work great for topping greens, making burgers, or a bean-salad.

Check out the Nutrition section here. I think that will help with what you are looking for.

question .. what is all this walking doing for me ?

after wotking out arms, i can see veins on my lower arms .. what gives ? also see streatch marks on biceps

I dont have a scale lol .. dont plan on buying one anytime soon either

I don't think you are eating enough. Also eating 5-6 meals a day can help speed up your motabolism. Why don't you want to eat meat, if you don't mind me asking?
Veins sticking out could mean you are dehydrated. To my knowledge body builders dehydrate themselves before a show so that their veins stick out.
Eating all the carb is also not good. I am a big carb eater but it isn't great for you, you should balance out protien and carbs more.
Why are you only doing arm weights? Doing full body weights will help you. Walking is good but as soon as you can I would add in some othe form of exercise. Make sure you mix up your routine so you don't platue.

You ask what are the negatives of keeping this up for a year. Unfortunately to keep weight off you are going to need to continue eating well and exercising for the rest of your life. You can ease back slightly so your at a maintaining level rather than a losing level but to lose the weight now you should choose a plan you can stick with for the rest of your life. good luck

Thanks for the reply :)

Im cutting out meat because i have never done that before .. as u mention i should be maintaining but right now i want to loose my goal amount in a year or so give or take ...

Arms is just about one thing i can do daily along with the walking. dont have the time for the gym, i jog when i can also.

Explain this eat more to me .. if i continue will i get sick ? will i just not loose any weight ?

i really want to see inches and fat reduce not overnight... but i think a year is a good time for me to see drastic loss if i stick to plan..

Once im happy then i can go into maintain mode and incoarperate meat and such back into my diet.

yeah thats in the mix as well .. but not daily .. i try to as often thou.

I didn't mean you should be maintaining, but you need to choose a plan you can stick to for life.
You don't need a gym to do legs. With the same weights as you use for your arms (you don't even need weights, you can use large water bottles filled with water, or cans of beans or something) do squats (and plia squats), step ups onto a bench, lunges, I am sure their are more but I can't think right now.
Also you shouldn't work your arms everyday. You should work hard one day then give them a bit of a rest. Try alternating legs one day, arms the next.

You could get sick from eating like that as it certainly isn't the healthiest. You need fruits, Veggies (I have great issues with those 2 as well) and protien. Not eating enough slows your motabolism so you will burn calories slower. so if you eat more (5-6 small meals a day) you will be able to utilize your motabolism to it's fullest.
If you change your diet dramatically from your weight loss plan, to a 'maintenance' plan that ads in all the stuff you took out and eat more you will find it very hard to keep the weight off I think.

Ok ,,, just a few querries i have ..

When you say my metabalism will slow down, that exactly is that .. my goal is to loose about 6/10pounds per month .. is that impossible if metabalism slows down ???

In terms of working out arms, im somewhat addicted to doing it daily.. i dont do it weekends, when i dont do it in the week i just feel strange .. i was hoping the walking and jogging would be good lower body workout.. but i guess i need to add more ...

I think i may buy a scale on the weekend just to see where im at now ..

You need to moderate out all your foods. Not just meat, fat, protein, carbs... but everything.

You need to drink more water, and mix up your routine a bit. If you continue to do one workout for a period of time your body will get used to what you are doing and you won't burn SQUAT! loMy two cents in a nut shell!

YAY FIRST POST BABY!!

wont burn squat you say ?? so what happens when nothing is being burned ? just stuck on one weight ???? ?? ? ?

Hello BiggZ

From what I can see the advice you've been given on this forum is sound. However, like most people I've come across there's something missing. I'm developing a list of frequently asked questions with answers on weightloss which I've posted here

There's very little about food on it because, believe it or not, the food you eat is not the major factor in weightloss or weightgain.

Let me know what you think.

I wouldn't give up meat unless you've really done your research or know what you're doing. You'll freak your body out from iron deficiency. My advice would be either to do your research and figure out a strategy without meat, or to eat meat on a daily basis (a bare minimum is one 4-ounce serving, or a quarter pound).

Also, what is your goal really? Is it to lose weight and be healthy about it in the process? If so, eat some meat daily, either a big dose of a leafy vegetable (I eat steamed spinach since it's easy for me to get down with a little salt and fat free margarine) or several pieces of fruit.

Walking 3 miles a day should be sufficient activity; however, if you feel restless on days that you don't do more, then keep up your other routine.
