Sport less expensive way to get good fats?

Sport Fitness
I realized that my diet is quite low in fats. I have flax seed at least once a day and sometimes more, and then I also have a fish oil capsule with all of my meals throughout the day, but that's about it.

I am still getting much more carbs and protein than I am fats.

I bought a bag of almonds today and it was $10 for a pound! Ack! That's so damn expensive.

What are some cheaper alternatives to almonds for good fats?

Natural peanut butter

when people talk about oils I always just picturing someone drinking a bit of oil..

Is that actually how you guys include oils in your diet?

I will cook things in olive oil that can normally be cooked without it. Like scrambled eggs for example. Sometimes I add it to rice.

You can also top vegetables with it. What's really good are fresh sliced tomatoes with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. You can also make a salad dressing out of it by mixing it with vinegar and spices.

Although, I have to admit, on some days where I'm feeling discouraged about my lack of weight gain, I will drink a spoonful of olive oil just to add some easy calories. I only do it when I'm really frustrated though. Normally I try to add healthy amounts in to my other food.

and what would be a good way to include natural peanut butter in your diet?

Wouldn't want to include much bread.. how do you guys use it in your diet?

You can mix it in a blender.

I usually go with yogurt (1 cup plain, fat free), flax seed (1 tlbsp), 1 banana, and mix berries (1 cup strawberries, blue, and cran). That's about 369 calories right there.

Or you can go with whey protein, fat free milk, peanut butter, banana. I don't know the total, but it's roughly 505 calories.

Mix it in oatmeal, dip apple slices in it, eat it by itself,

...and you can find healthy breads if you look hard enough...especially if you make it yourself

ok cool, some of those ideas sound really good.

Why is natural peanut butter better than regular peanut butter and sunflower butter though?

Natural peanut butter is made of only peanuts and salt, sometimes organic oil.

The processed peanut butter contains hydrogenated oils, and some other chemical ingredients that aren't good for you.

why aren't just regular peanuts a good source of fat?

And what about all of the other nuts that you can buy much cheaper than almonds and etc.?

They are. Best if you stick with raw peanuts rather than ones with added oils, flavors, salt

All other nuts are good to. Almonds, pistachios, cashews etc. are a good source of mono-unsaturated fat, while walnuts are a good source of poly-unsaturated fat. Nuts are also said to be a 'brain food'. Just a bit of trivia, peanuts aren't actually nuts - they're legumes. Cashews are actually seeds. Anyway, all are good for you.

Another good and tasty fat source is natural Tahini sauce
(sesame butter), mine is about $2 a jar. Can be used as a dip.

i eat peanut butter with whole wheat bread as a simple and cheap lunch, i sometimes toast the bread for extra texture
another good combo is dipping a cut up apple into peanut butter, i would eat that everyday if was more accessible to eat while at college

You can make your own peanut butter. It's ridiculously simple: just take some peanuts (stripped of shell or red coat), put them in a food processor, add some peanut oil (or whatever oil), then mix again until creamy or the way you are happy with. Put it in a air tight jar, and boom, you're done with peanuts for two whole months.

2 months ? More like 3 weeks for me.

Ha, I always try to eat peanut butter every other day instead of every day.

Also, almonds can be bought rather cheaply if you buy them in the shell. I bought a very large bag for like 4 dollars.

Also, peanuts can be bought in large bags for like 2-3 dollars. Very cheap, and very good.
