Hi, Lumpee. You may think your post has been derailed, but that happens occasionally. You may prefer to start a diary. How are you doing?

Struggling a bit.
Took me what felt like hours to do shopping. Trying to analyze all the labels etc.

-look for low fat foods.
-look for low sugar foods.
But high in sodium.
-Look for low sodium foods
But high calories...
Etc etc.
Everything tells you its lite or light or diet or has healthy written on it.
Labels all missleading.
What the hell am i meant to be looking for?
Sure eat fresh fruit veg what ever.
That be great if the shops actually stocked it. Most of it on the shelf is near use by date, near end of life etc. You buy it take it home and its rotten in 2-3days. Just doesn't last. Hence is not a feasable option for everything.
Then there is other stuff. I.e. snax etc
I picked up a "health food" option and read the pack.
It had more sugar and fat in 100gm serve than a whole packet of chips(crisps?)

Im also getting sick. Im so over f#cking winter. Everyone i meet has a cold and passes it to me. Ive had it 4 times this year. Joys of not having an immune system.
So trying to diet whilst having zero energy and feeling like i wanna neck myself to be rid of this damn cold.

...

-look for low fat foods.
...
why? as far as macronutrients go, i'd rate fat just a tad below protein and way above carbohydrates. anything you pick up at the market labeled "low fat" will be high(er) carbs with added sugar. one of my go-to breakfasts is bacon & eggs.

Yes lables are deceptive, when they say low anything it is compared to either there other products or their old formula so their claims are legal and as overlandflyer said anything that claims low fat will be filled with extra sugar and salt to make up for the lack of taste after removing some of the fat,

Also remember fat is actually required in our diet, less than 50 gram and you will not be getting all of the fat soluble nutrients you need for good hormone function.

I don't know anything about where you live but is there any farmers market type places to shop rather than a normal supermarket or are you in one of the American food deserts that I have heard about ?

Hi, Lumpee. I think you are in Australia (AFL mentioned?) Supermarket veg are often not very fresh. I'm in a rural part of Tasmania & my nearest town is 11 km away. There is a little fruit & veg store (as well as one of the larger chains) & the veg is much fresher & better quality. You can establish a relationship with a greengrocer, even in a city & take back stuff that goes bad. They need to look after their customers.
Most "health food" snacks are just as bad as others. They are just pretending.
A little full-fat yoghurt is so much nicer & better for you than a large serve of low-fat, high-sugar, high sodium yoghurt. Just don't have as much. It's also very filling. I just tried the Jalna low-fat Greek yoghurt and it is disgusting (IMO). I'm back to the full-fat version.
You really would benefit from consuming more fruit & veg. I have just a bit of a cold at the moment, but I think having a hot lemon drink every night helps fight off colds.
Hope you get better soon. Spring is just around the corner. Colds do make you feel very grumpy :)

Lumpee! I'm so glad to see you back - I've been wanting to know how last weekend's footy-watching went - ie the snacking, and how your plans worked out. What happened?

I'm with you on the frustrations of bad fruit and veg - I bought some capsicum from Woolworths on special a couple of weeks back, and they went soft-in-spots within a couple of days. I cut the bits off, and still used the remainder, but fumed over having been suckered by them. So now, for me, to the actual fruit-and-veg places, not any more trusting the supermarket.
I know it feels as if the supermarkets are cheaper, but (as per my experience) it doesn't work out that way in the long run. (Eating seasonally, too, is a help.)

Trying to lose weight on a budget and in a share-house has real challenges and I'm cheering for you all the way. Good luck for this weekend's footy!

Hey Kaylaa good to see you posting again.

I know shopping for good food can be a challenge, but if you do your best the outcome should be fine. Others have offered you good advice, I won't add much to it, but I am glad to see you trying. Let us know how it goes.

Yes thats the issue i have with the fresh veg and fruit. They seem to hold it in storage til its almost near the end of its shelf life, then put it out for sale grrrr.
Ive looked for a good green grocery locally but yet to find one.
Growing my own isnt possible due to council epa regulations. (Ground water contaminants)

Weekend footy wasnt bad.
Tried something different for meal/snax.
We had grilled chicken breast wraps.
Tortilla/flat bread chips. Hommus
Plain pop corn
And a cheese platter.

Will have to see how this weekend goes.

I have not bothered weighing myself as i did that last time. The disappointment kinda killed the dieting.

I'm not very knowledgeable, I'm afraid, Lumpee, but for what it's worth - I check calories first, then look for added sugar, but am not extremely fussy - I recognise that most chutneys, for example, are going to have a bit of sugar. I don't think sodium is a problem for me, so I don't check that.
I don't actually count calories - for example, I'll eat a carrot or an apple without think about calories at all - but things that come in packets that make it easy to see how many calories are in it per one - as in the crackers I eat as an occasional snack are 115 calories for seven, according to the packet - then I'll use that as a guide as to whether to have it or not.
I avoid very sugary things, like a Snickers bar, but that's more for teeth than for diety reasons.

I'm not particularly knowledgeable either really Lumpee & I think we all follow different methods of eating. Some are keto or very low carb, so do IF & keto at the same time. We all have different priorities. If I buy packaged food I now have to first look at Sodium, under strict instructions by my heart specialist. I think if you steer away from packaged food & try to eat more vegetables & lean protein & a little fruit each day you should do well.

Hey Kaylaa, good to see you posting. My sense is that for most people calories are most important, but if you have some kind of medical condition it might be sodium. None of us reading this forum are likely to ever suffer from a sodium deficiency, so cutting back won't hurt. Avoiding refined sugar is also a good idea, but to me that goes to calorie count. I think eating things with lots of refined sugar is at the least a waste of calories that could be better used elsewhere. Take all this with a few grains of salt, I am not expert, my opinions are worth what you pay for them, nothing but the time it takes to read this.

Stick in here with us, sounds like you are making progress.

Been MIA due to another cold/flu....

Been doing some research, as i have been seeing/hearing about the 1200Cal diet everywhere.

But i have also been reading about workin out my personal bmr and daily calorie intake requirement.
And that a minimum of 500 and max of 1000Cal reduction is what i should be aiming for.

Then i read many diets don't count the calories in many things like vegetables etc (so not sure how that works in a calorie counting diet?)

BMR and TDEE are always going to be just estimates unless you actually have it measured in a lab. That estimate may be high of low depending on you as an individual, and the formula used to do the estimate, most formula are based on total mass, the better one is based on lean mass however you do need to know your bodyfat % . Basing your calorie intake on the calculated estimate less 500 calories is a good start. 1200 is a popular suggestion as to a minimum calorie intake but individuals are all different, but going lower than 1200 calories makes it challenging to meet nutritional needs.

The not counting of plain vegetables is a strategy to encourage the eating of more veg.or in the case of a keto diet where the counting of macros is more important. Carbs in fibrous vegetables do not count towards your carb total ans the fibre carbs are not digestible.

Hi Lumpee
I can relate with what you are going through emotionally and mentally. It's not easy and yes there isn't any short cuts. Its a journey of making tough decisions on a daily basis. We are all different and think and reason differently. Experience things differently. I think it all boils down to taking small steps on a daily basis and challenging oneself, but not too much causing feelings making you feel despondent. Celebrating small victories and not losing hope or motivation. I think making adjustments even if they are small is already a positive step in the right direction.
